It is the fiftieth anniversary of the GOP's renunciation of democracy.

Who woulda known then the deep consequences of this day…..

US infant mortality rate rose for the first time in 20 years. US rate double that of many developed nations.

American excellence indeed.

I think the larger and longer-term consequences stemmed from Ford's pardon. He shouldn't have done it, and Nixon should've been held accountable. But hindsight is 20/20.

This.

We had a chance to nip this in the bud back in '75 and we failed. Iran/Contra, the Brooks Brothers Riot, Scott Bloch, Scooter Libby, Plame, Lawyergate, the Yellowcake forgery, Dump-Ukraine, Michael Flynn's perjury, Manafort, January 6 all date from that.

Thing is though, Ford had no idea ANY of that was coming.

He just knew that his ENTIRE Presidency would have been him answering one question after another about Nixon if he didn't make the problem go away. And for that, I can't fault him.

It truly is a "butterfly effect" kind of deal.

Ummm, it was Gerry Ford who pardoned Nixon. Repubs gotta protect their fellow criminals.

Yeah, and it still doesn't excuse it. Rather than deal with the problem at hand, just sweep things under the rug and pretend they don't exist.

The story of the last 40+ years of American governance in a nutshell.

Looking back in hindsight, yes, things would have played out differently.

I mean, America would be different if Abe decided not to see that play as well.

The United States is just 50 third world countries in a trench coat.

One combines no money and poor healthcare with lots of people of color, especially African-Americans, and it leads to insanely high levels of mortality rates amongst moms and babies. African-American women and babies die at rates something like 3-5 times higher than their white counterparts, which is shameful and embarrassing. Holds true in blue states too, although they have money and decent healthcare to counteract their implicit bias against African-Americans.

Yep, that's why Michigan and Illinois are higher than otherwise expected.

Although the range for each color changes over the years, it appears that in 2014 and 2015, more states were in the lower range colors. Then starting in 2016 and moving forward, more states get into the darker color, high rate ranges (3rd highest or higher). And then of course there is 2020. I wonder what was going on especially from 2017 - 2021? /s
