The 2012 Presidential Election Part I - The guns of August

Re: The 2012 Presidential Election Part I - The guns of August

The least they could do is if they're going to push to continue to spend $700 billion a year is to suggest we start occupying nations and plundering their riches to pay for other things.

"The Iraqi oil will pay for our invasion" wasn't a PC idea, but at least it was a plan to pay for the GD war.

Yes, yes, and YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is the Traditional Method. If you want what's under the land you enslave the population (South America). If you want the land itself you genocide the population (North America). Of course in either case you are (1) "responding to aggression," (2) "fighting for the self-determination and dignity of all peoples," and (3) "promoting the True Faith."

LOL

We spend more money than any other nation on earth on the military. We also spend more as a percentage of GDP then any other nation on earth.

We're broke. So, the idea is to spend more on the military. BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
While I'm in favor of cutting defense spending, particularly with regards to overseas operations, we also spend more than twice as much on entitlement programs than on Defense, so we also need to overhaul (reduce spending on) those programs.

We may need to cut entitlements, but this comparison is a false one. The better argument would be something like, "we spend twice as much per capita on entitlement programs as any other advanced democracy."

Figure 4 in this white paper suggests that as late as 2007 our social spending was prioritized quite low compared to the other developed countries of the world. It may of course have grown disproportionately from other countries since then, but I doubt it.

I've already advocated abolishing Medicare and Social Security. So, why when I ask to cut defense spending do one of you right wingers start talking about entitlements?

Next.

The idea is to GROW THE ECONOMY and to spend more wisely, not to spend more.

I think the world is a much better place with the Berlin wall gone and the Iron Curtain in tatters, don't you?

or perhaps you are too young to remember what an ominous place the world was before 1980, when Iran held US citizens hostage for over a year and laughed at our impotence?

I got a whiff of anti-Islamist bias in your post and don't appreciate it. Meanwhile, an 11-year old mentally challenged girl in Pakistan is facing execution. Next.

You so easily smear America. What happened to "native Americans" wasn't a genocide. It certainly wasn't anything we should be proud of, but it wasn't genocide. What happened to European Jewry during the 3rd Reich was genocide. This particular lefty meme surfaces here periodically. It's nonsense. This is the Ward Churchill view of history, complete with smallpox infected blankets. With just as much intellectual weight.

It would be refreshing if your cynicism occasionally focused on evil doings elsewhere. But what you see as America's shortcomings are front and center. Always.

Perhaps it's because when someone on the left talks about cutting defense to help reduce deficits/debt, they rarely discuss doing so in conjunction with also cutting entitlements which contribute even more to deficits/debt. If you advocate abolishing Medicare and SS, fine; as I said, I advocate Defense cuts.

You know this how? Tell me, what tax was raised to pay for the last two wars?

Re: The 2012 Presidential Election Part I - The guns of August

After building all that good will and touchy feelings, I'm not sure why the GOP strategists put in Clint in an unscripted rant that undid what they're trying to do. The OMG looks on everyone and on Mrs. Romney told us all what they were feeling when it happened. Is Clint really a Republican or is he just pretending to be one to make the GOP look bad? I mean the oversized suit and unkempt hair looked out of place. The disrespect to the President by using the F-word and other stuff made him look small minded. Inexplicable and uncharacteristic of the GOP when usually everything is scripted and rehearsed to detail.

Rush loved the Clint thing.

Re: The 2012 Presidential Election Part I - The guns of August

I missed it. Did he call Obama a punk?

I missed it too as I was playing hockey but I saw the clips later. He was talking to an empty chair pretending Obama was in it. He was improvising and babbling stuff intended to make the President look bad but it looks like it had an unintended effect. It took the attention away from Romney and the speeches by Rubio and Christy did not mention Romney too often making me think that 2016 is what they're aiming for and not 2012.

Re: The 2012 Presidential Election Part I - The guns of August

The saddest part of this whole mess is I agree with a lot of Clint's politics. If the Republican platform reflected Clint's values instead of trying to land as deep as possible in the derp zone, I might actually vote for them.

Check out some of his interviews. He's fiscally conservative, but actually very socially progressive/libertarian. He's fine with t3h gh3ys getting married, etc. and wants people to be left the hell alone and able to pursue their own happiness. That's what I consider the word "conservative" to mean.

Now watch the Republicans find this out and label him a doddering old RINO.

Jeebus, I was kidding. See, you mentioned Iran holding American hostages and Iran is run by Islamists, and political correctness dictates you can't say anything critical about Islam, then I mentioned an 11-year old is under sentence of death. . ..awww forget it. I'm having no luck the last couple of days cracking wise. Could be my attempts at humor aren't that humerous. Could be some folks take themselves way too seriously. But then, I'm cranky, aren't I?

That is a problem. Same with Vietnam you can't pay for a war out of current earnings.

Sure. Now let's try to remember that we all pay taxes to pay for our entitlements while we were asked to sacrifice nothing for two wars. Yet, the entitlements are constantly blamed for the current fiscal crisis while the two wars are barely mentioned.
