The 2012 Presidential Election Part I - The guns of August

Re: The 2012 Presidential Election Part I - The guns of August

Nope, I'm not ok with it and the government is not stealing. Stealing is against the law.

When you pay taxes, you're paying into a general fund. From that pool, many services are funded of which last I checked the rich benefit from many. Also, the rich are willingly paying into that fund. If they choose not to pay, they are free at any time to break their contract with the US and give up their citizenship. No 'theft' here.

And what are the poor paying? Well, 48% of them are paying zero. And yet, they're still getting stuff.

Let's try this: a restaurant has two waitresses and four tables of customers (hypothetical scenario). The first waitress provides excellent service, and receives from each of her two tables a $100 tip. The second waitress is not so good, acts like the stereotypical frumpy waitress you see in bad films, and receives from each of her two tables a $1 tip (and let's assume it's justified). Should the restaurant have a general fund where each waitress receives $101 in tips for the day, or should each waitress receives the tip amounts that they themselves so rightfully earned?

We need an education for Rover, and please be sure to include in that education the definition of the phrase "mutual benefit".

By all means, please keep these crackpot theories of yours coming! Instead of arguing with you, it far more amusing to sit back and see what comes next.

So Flag, give us your views of the Fed.....

I think it'd be more entertaining to read what you believe my opinion is, seeing as how I don't think I need to answer this in order to get a response from you, as no matter what I say, the response would not be all that dissimilar. Call it "Know Your Knuckledraggers", if you must.

Please Flag, this is your stage. I'd also like your views on the Moon Landing and Area 51 if you don't mind....

Very true. Rover will post the same stuff no matter what you say to him. It's like you just push the Rover button and out comes the same partisan banter no matter what the situation or context.

You guys are way too touchy and defensive. I merely asked the guy to pontificate on some historical events and institutions which in the past he's shown no hestitation to do with his, umm "interesting" take on things, so I'm not sure what the problem is here.

I never thought I'd be able to silence Flag, but sometimes unintended consequences work too! Too bad though because I really wanted to see his take on the Moon Landing and any govt conspiracies behind it. :(;)

Five Reasons Ayn Rand Is Bad for Business
Published: Monday, 20 Aug 2012 | 2:50 PM ET Text Size By: Geoffrey James, INC Twitter

For decades, CEOs have touted Ayn Rand as a "must-read" for staff and employees alike. Here are five good reasons that's a bad idea — if you want your business to be successful.

1. Rand focuses employees on money.

Rand practically worshipped the almighty dollar, seeing the acquisition of wealth as a goal worthy in and of itself.

Unfortunately, when that attitude spreads throughout an organization, a higher salary becomes the only motivation that really works. That means top workers will, of course, leave the moment they get a better offer elsewhere.

2. Rand encourages selfishness.

For Rand, there is no higher good than pursuing one's own happiness. The problem with that philosophy is that it encourages workers to view their personal success as being far more important than the group's success — and that kind of self-centered thinking is fatal to getting team members to work together

3. Rand creates fanatics.

While some Rand fans have a nuanced view of her, there are plenty of people who glom onto her writing with evangelical intensity. Their quest to convince everyone else in the workplace that Rand was the greatest thinker and philosopher of the 20th century (or maybe of all time) is distracting, annoying and counter-productive.

4. Rand alienates the religious.

Rand's value system is the antithesis of Judeo-Christian teaching. For example, while Jesus says "blessed are the poor," Rand calls them "moochers."

Top-quality workers who value their religious faith might feel out of place in a work environment that seeks to canonize Rand's brand of atheism.

5. Rand discourages charitable giving.

Rand devotees criticize CEOs who give to charity because "you have no moral obligation to 'give back,' because you didn't take anything in the first place."

For many workers, though, an altruistic desire to "give back" is a strong motivator. Such workers respect leaders who know that others contributed to their success.

Please not that I am not making a judgment on the philosophical validity of Objectivism or Ayn Rand's work in general. I'm only pointing out that if you promote her writing inside your own company, you're shooting yourself in the foot.

On a related note, why are conservatives always so attacted to ugly women? Ann Rand, Jan Brewer, etc. No wonder you're all PO'd at the world all the time!:p

You're saying Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton are prettier?

Who conceded the rich use more government services? There was one post going through a few programs but what is the basis for the "rich use more" position?

Nobody (of any worth ;) )
That item may be the stupidest thing ever typed on these boards! :D

I don't know what Pelosi looked like when she was younger, but Rand is one scary looking broad at any age!:eek::eek: I wouldn't insult HRC by putting her in that category.;)

Then perhaps Ruth Ginsburg or Janet Napolitano?

Wow if that isnt the pot calling the kettle black..

You forget that the people you are debating don't believe that you make more via hardwork. Only luck and rich parents determine income. Want to make your story more unrealistic? Have the restaurant owned by immigrants who came here with nothing...that could never happen.
