The 2011 Golf Thread - In Honor of Kevin Na!

Re: The 2011 Golf Thread - In Honor of Kevin Na!

That was the worst US Open course I've ever seen. Combination of no rain to grow the rough out for the previous month and rain earlier this week to soften the course up.

I like seeing courses where the players spend the entire week b*tching about how unforgiving the conditions are (i.e. if they don't land the ball in a 15x15 square around the hole, it'll roll completely off the green). :D

Exactly. The US Open is supposed to be the course when someone gets to -3 by Friday night and has a 4 shot lead and everyone's howling about the par 4 that's playing at a 4.9 strokes per hole rate. The PGA is when they can shoot -17 and have 40 people under par.

Yeah, when you come in at -8 or -9 at the US Open, and still got blown away, there's something wrong. Once upon a time the USGA shot for even par to win.

Next year they're headed to Olympic, and if I was listening correctly, I heard yesterday that no one had ever finished under par at a US Open played at Olympia.

And that guy that is -3 on Friday night? More often than not he shoots 78-76 over the weekend and is all but forgotten by 3:00 Sunday afternoon.

Since you mentioned it, I decided to look it up real quick.

1987, Scott Simpson finished 3-under par. 1966, Billy Casper finished 2-under.

So not quite, but still closer than -16. ;)

Well, then obviously I wasn't listening correctly. I still think something's not right about seeing -16 at the US Open. That's just absurd.

Yeah, record-breaking scores seem to come around once a decade. I'm sure it'll be back to normal next year.

Re: The 2011 Golf Thread - In Honor of Kevin Na!

My pards and I won our flight in Indiana PA. In the final on Sunday we were two down with three to play.... We teed off, he was through the trees left, I was in the rough right. Driving down he says, "we need a hero". I thought, " we need a choke" as we had just putted ourselves to 2nd place. My approach clipped a tree and was just on the front of the green of the sixth hole (shotgun play on championship Sunday) with the pin all the way back. I somehow dropped a 100ft putt in for birdie and a win. 1dn now. The 7th hole is a par three over water. I hit a 9i to maybe 12 ft and rolled that in after three par's. Now we're tied with our 18th hole to play. After they made their par putt my pards followed up a nice approach with a 20ft birdie of his own and we won. Still pumped thinking of the finish. They made three pars over the final three holes and lost a 2up lead. Incredible.....

This story basically sums up the great game of golf.

Turns out that Tiger was never planning to make an announcement. His agent made a statement today about there not being any announcements. Go figure.

The announcement is that there is no announcement? Methinks someone should be sacked after someone else has been sacked.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to MountieBoyOz again.

Re: The 2011 Golf Thread - In Honor of Kevin Na!

It is shaping up to be an exciting weekend at Royal St. George's. Only 7 shots separates the entire field, so really, anybody could still with this thing.

Darren Clarke and Lucas Glover are at -4 with the lead. If Clarke wins, we would have had 3 different major champions from Northern Ireland in the last 6 majors. Crazy.
Rory is 4 back, definitely within striking distance. Kaymer and Jimenez only one back. Davis Love 3 and Tom Lehman in the mix too, only 2 back.

Tom Watson is in at +2, after making an ace today.

Plenty of other names that could make a run at this. It is going to be a fun weekend. I'm pulling for Lehman, he's one of us.

Re: The 2011 Golf Thread - In Honor of Kevin Na!

Weather is the big equalizer today - perfect conditions for the Open Championship!

Re: The 2011 Golf Thread - In Honor of Kevin Na!

Dustin Johnson just drove it through the green on 5 - 419 freakin' yards!

Re: The 2011 Golf Thread - In Honor of Kevin Na!

And wound up making par.

And the Open weather has arrived.
