The 2011 Golf Thread - In Honor of Kevin Na!

Re: The 2011 Golf Thread - In Honor of Kevin Na!

Rory is at -7, 4 shot lead after 5 today...deja vu?

edit: -8 thru 7...
Zach Johnson -3 under through 6 today

Was just going to post that...He's running away with it, but its still very, very early. Maybe this will be like the 1997 Masters were for Tiger.

edit: he got an eagle at the par 4 8th hole, he must've holed out from the fairway

Rory to -11, -5 on the day thru 14. He has an 8 shot lead over Zach Johnson and Y.E. Yang.

edit: he's through 15 at -5 on the day. If he birdies out he ties Johnny Miller's all-time mark of 63 at the US Open. He birdied 17 and 18 yesterday, and 16 is a par 5.

-12, -6 on the day through 16

edit: the record for lowest 36 hole score at the US Open is 132. If McIlroy pars 17 and 18, he beats it by 2 strokes. He birdied both holes yesterday. Kid is making history.

edit2: birdie on 17. -13 overall, -7 on the day through 17. Birdie to tie the all time greatest round ever.

he's definitely tearing the golf course up. got a chance to follow his round on sunday last year at the Barclay's (fed ex cup tourney) and really liked watching him play.

Re: The 2011 Golf Thread - In Honor of Kevin Na!

Just got to b dubs for lunch and to watch. It looks like McIlroy was in the pond on 18.

At no time in the entire history of the US Open has a player been to 13 under par. Until today.

Edit: double bogey on 18 to end the dream round. -11 after 36, and he still got the 36 hole record.

Edit2: Now that I'm back at my computer. It looked to me like Rory hit is drive on 18 pretty far into the rough on the left, he had some trees in his way, decided to go for the green anyway (and presumably the record round of 63). He had to hit a huge hook to get around the trees, and it just hooked too much and took one bounce into the pond. When its all said and done, it was still the best 36 hole showing ever at the US Open. He needs to keep his head on straight to prevent another incident like at Augusta.

I'd love to see Rory close this thing out, but you never know when he's gonna throw an 80 up on the board. Hope the kid keeps it together over the weekend. Heck, even just treads water and makes someone in the field catch him.

If he pars out, he'll win by 10. No one will catch him, and the course will only get tougher. He only needs to go -2 from here on out and he'll beat Nicklaus, Woods, Janzen, and Furyk's record for lowest score ever, and he'll also beat Woods' record for best score to par ever.

I'd love to see him post a Tiger-like dismantling of this course.

Me too. Golf needs a new young superstar to step into the void left by Tiger. McIlroy will be the favorite for every major the next 10 years if he posts about a -14 and wins by double digits, just like Tiger was.

Re: The 2011 Golf Thread - In Honor of Kevin Na!

And a superstar is born.

In other news, I finally played my first round of the year. Yeah, I've been slacking. First round of the year, and shot better than any round all of last year, played all 18 with the same ball, and never had a blow-up hole with a huge number like it always seems I do. I probably could have knocked another 5 off my score if I putted better, but after not playing for about 9 months, I didn't really have a feel for it.

Re: The 2011 Golf Thread - In Honor of Kevin Na!

Great US Open by Rory McIlroy! Although I'm disappointed he blew it and had to 3-putt on the 71st. Granted I'd probably have to 5-putt or something awful like that.

More importantly, he's white. The game has been reclaimed by its owners! :p
