The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

And I completely agree about recruiting more European players. It needs to happen....and fast.

...

Hope everyone enjoys college hockey really well....cause at this rate, thats all we're soon to have. :(

It's a chicken and egg thing: College coaches aren't in it to promote the sport in Europe. They keep their jobs by winning games. There's no incentive to recruit European players until they become competitive. You're saying they won't become competitive til NCAA schools bring some over here. Well, we'll see.

And see my post below: women's hockey in the olympics won't go anywhere anytime soon so long as men's hockey is also played.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I dunno. Some of these IOC members seem to be around like forever. I think many of them have been around well over 30 years, and they seem to be the patient types. I mean try to get them to change anything is like moving heavy rocks by hand  .......Posters on this Forum are the impatient types. :D
Oh yeah, the IOC for sure has long standing members...but thats not what Im talking about. I'm talking about them (the IOC) making the decision to cut a sport because it doesn't draw enough attention for the money it costs and/or because other countries cannot develop at a fast enough pace to make competition worth while. The IOC really does not care whats happening in NCAA hockey and it will not influence their decision to keep or cut the sport. NCAA =/= tOlympics....two completely different businesses.
In my personal case, not sure if I can wait another 30 years. Might not be around :(
positive thoughts OnMAA, positive thoughts. :)

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

If fear of potential embarrassment in Sochi doesn't motivate them, I doubt that anything will. I agree that it is good to invest in growing the game, but do so in places that really need the help. Help Poland, or Latvia, or the Ukraine, and I bet if they whaled on Mother Russia a time or two, sports machinery in Moscow would find another gear.

Poland ?....They don't even have a level 1 mens team.

I'd say grow it to the next level in the traditional hockey countries first ( in addition to China). That would be Sweden, Finland, Russia, Chechia, Slovakia, Germany. Those countries already have a hockey infrastructure on the mens side, so the investment is mostly human power.

Once you have an established 6 or 8 better level programs, expand to other countries were the efforts have the greatest chance of success. (Japan, Switzerland, etc)

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Now que the Minny group and a certain Boston College fan or two who would rather gouge their eyes out with a rusty spork than let her play. Even if it means risking the development of the sport in other countries.
Nice hyperbole. You can keep your spork. My view: if the rules are wrong, change them. If some have to abide by the rules, then all should. If that's wrong, then I don't want to be right.

Not what I'm saying at all. Try again.

Hope your right, but I disagree.

Then what are you saying when you say recruiting more Europeans "needs to happen, and fast"?

Why?

I'm not asking because I'm anti-Euro, i'm asking from a cost-benefit perspective. What benefit is there in programs spending X amount of dollars from their recruiting budgets trying to find the one diamond in the rough from Europe when the same amount of money could get several players from North America?

Neither does China. I picked countries that established hockey powers like Russia and the Czech Republic wouldn't want to lose to. As teams beneath them start to improve, Sweden and Finland will have extra incentive to improve as well. Rather than strive for 6-8 strong teams and a bunch who have no hope of competing, try to get a broader pool of competition and make it a truly international game. I'm not going to go into Michigan (Russia) and "help" them if they are too chauvinistic to help themselves. Once BU got a program, BC suddenly cared.

make that little bit of throw up a lot of throw up. time to go brush my teeth.

Thanks for proving my point. ;)

Lets risk international development of the sport because of this. Slice it and dice it any way you want ARM....I'll stand by my feelings that you are being incredibly selfish and narrow minded regarding this issue.

Save your mumbo jumbo that this and that isn't fair and rules are rules (awww, boo hoo, life's not fair!?!111!!eleventy!!!1!). Some things are actually bigger than NCAA hockey, your precious Golden Gophers, and your disdain for a certain coach.

where's that pic of the fat man skipping along whistling "haterz gonna hate." Help me out BC boys, I'm sure you have it saved somewhere.

I tried to speak in succinct sentences. You resorted to Cafe speak. Very convincing.

Actually haul some of those talents from there into local prep schools as a path to the NCAA. This is how Ryabkina and Polenska got to the NCAA. Many people over there are of lesser means compared to here, so the only way that would happen is via the FA route.

Develop a central scouting system of 13-14-15 year olds and then bring them over at 16. There are ways to do it. I think this could be a centrally funded project. Put someone like Ruggiero in charge, have Ryabkina work with her once she graduates and make it happen. Fund it out of a central pot every school contributes into.

Another option is to bring a team over into the chowder cup, coached by let's say Ryabkina and Ruggiero or the UMD girl (sorry forgot her name ).

As long as you try to include the NCAA in the plan, you are going to be limited by NCAA rules. If we have some pool of funding, it may be better to invest that into developing a post-NCAA league where the graduates and European stars can play. Might solve two problems in one.

Na. i don't think we should help out at all. That way, more girls with talent like Iya will have to take a stipend to be able to make ends meet to even afford to play the sport. Then they will all be ineligible to play in the NCAA. And that for sure will help the sport grow internationally. ;)

Yep...Minnesota and WCHA fans outside of Duluth are responsible for the potential failure of Russia in an effort to build an internationally competitive women's hockey program because they believe in playing by and enforcing rules for teams competing in NCAA athletics (or more specifically, thought Iya should be declared ineligible because she was).

What a moron.

Sorry, but did you really just say we should be scouting 7th and 8th graders to bring them over as high school sophomores? That'd be insane even for a money sport like basketball, let alone something as low on the sporting world totem-pole as women's hockey.

uhhhh, yeah, he did say that as we are talking about developing and growing the sport. its a really simple concept. but then again, you said there was no talent in Europe so I don't really expect you to grasp this one.
