The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I JUST got home.. turned on the TV and saw that.. whoa... probably end up like 8-1 by the end of the game but good for China to get a lead.

I have to record the game because my wife is Chinese. She almost woke up the kids when the girl scored!
I hope they put in a good effort; we need it to help other countries get into the game and keep it around.

Wow, announcers are so pro Finland..... killing me....

Go China! Stay with it!!!

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Go China Go. Nice to see at least they are able to get it out of their zone and able to kill off a penalty. Good for them:)

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

They mentioned China starting a U-18 team for International play .. so that could be of some benefit if they can land a good western hockey mind to go live in China and help develop their programs to be competitive with at least the European teams before they try and think about catching the US or Canada.

If they got some of their 18-20 yr olds here in the NCAA that could be a big benefit as well.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I was impressed by China, but baffled by their decision to not pull the goalie.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

That really made no sense at all.. you're right.. obviously a coaching decision where they decided they were on the powerplay already, don't give up a chance for an open net goal when the puck is iced.. but it's the Olympics.. play to win or don't even come. That's where having a coach and development of the program from someone with a western hockey influence would really benefit them.

Their coach is the former coach of the Finnish national team. Maybe the language barrier was a contributing factor.

I wasn't able to watch the game tonight but wondered if this was mentioned at all:

Assistant Coach Ryan Stone, Colgate, served as the head coach of the Chinese National Women’s Ice Hockey Team during the 2005-06 season. The position sponsored by the New York Islanders NHL Hockey Club, he was responsible for the development of the entire national women’s ice hockey program in China. His duties included the development of the players’ skills and tactics, selection of players, evaluating the state of girls/women’s ice hockey in the country, teaching and supervising assistant coaches, holding coaching clinics for coaches of girls’ ice hockey in China. I am not sure when the new head coach took the reigns but it is obvious that this team has benefited from the generosity of the Islanders.

Another interesting point, the Chinese National team spent time training and playing games against some of the CWHL teams as well as others in the lead up to this year's Olympics. I wish that all of the emerging national programs could have this type of financial support and applaud the Islanders management for stepping up.

Sorry, but this is pointless. Have the US and Canada play a 4 out of 7 a week before the Olympics and call it a day. "Someday", I get it, just as with the men, just as with basketball, "someday" there will be a call for a decent international tournament, but this is a fricken joke. Pointless.

Reading the Brown thread is almost more exciting than watching these routs.

Big deal, yeah, maybe, just maybe Sweden might give someone a game....fine, even if that's true...so maybe, just maybe there are three.

Send everyone back to school, and let's play college hockey. At least there, even Brown keeps games to an average differential of about 3.
This sounds like a call to eliminate women's hockey from the winter Olympic Games.

I disagree wholeheartedly.
