The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I take back my earlier claims on Cavendish. Very impressive sprint today and he did it all by himself without the help of the team.

Hushovd just doesn't seem to have it at all anymore for the quick accelerations. Green jersey is Petacchi's to lose IMHO. Even if he can't beat Cav, he's still going to finish top 5 barring a crash or something.

All this with the rumor floating around about Cavendish having bronchitis? He seemed in high spirits during the earlier part of the ride and he absolutely destroyed the field on the sprint.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

This is close about halfway through.
Schleck is matching him so far.
How big are those 39 sec that Contador made up after the chain issue now?

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Sammy Sanchez - ouch - wish he could have held on. I am rooting for Hesjedal to keep up his great tour.

Waiting to see the 2nd check ... Contador + 6 seconds.

Would have loved to see what would happen tomorrow if there were only 2-3 seconds between them.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Contador will win the Tour by 39 sec.
Wow, the exact margin that he gained with the "chain incident" attack.

What a non-dominating Tour win for Contador.

Nice ride from Cancellara, he smoked everyone except for Martin.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

39 seconds - my wife is now on her soapbox about the chain incident. It will be an interesting discussion to hear what others think about this.

Spain gets Wimbledon, the World Cup and the TdF.

I would like to hear both of their comments on this in an interview!:)

Fascinating-might have been a dead heat if not for the "incident". Now that would have been something special.

Yep, you can't really make the judgement because you don't know just how much extra effort either might have done in today's time trial if the chain mishap had never occurred, but they'd be exactly even on time.

Would have been something to see going into the last, largely ceremonial, procession stage into Paris. Would have been fun to see tradition and protocol thrown out the window as they each tried for the win. Could have been some real fireworks going on.

Menchov's place on the podium might just be enoughto vault my team into a podium spot also, thanks to the bonus points at the end. Looks like I might sneak into third, don't think I can make second.

Looking at the pics from post race today, I don't think either Contador or Schleck could have put forth any extra effort. Contador looks absolutely drained.

Seems like Schleck hit a wall about 25-30km into today's race and then would lose a second here or there to Contador each km.

Probably, but you never know.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Nice to see Alberto and Andy "attack" the peloton and then Andy has a chain issue again and has to switch bikes. Wonder if that is true that the two are good friends off the bikes.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Cavendish explodes again to win the final stage. Seemed to be sitting back a bit and then just blew everyone away again at the end. That's acceleration,

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Another dominating win for Cav for his second straight stage win in Paris.
He had multiple bike lengths once again for his 5th win in this Tour.
Petacchi gets 2nd to claim the green jersey, Hushovd down in 7th.

Very exciting battle for the green jersey came down to the final sprint.
Petacchi 243 pts
Cavendish 232 pts
Hushovd 222 pts

Now we have to wait for the Vuelta. :)

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I missed the last two stages, doesn't sound like I missed much. TTs are boring, and another Cavendish crush to finish it out.

Cav takes green as well if he finishes stage one vs. sitting up.

I'm going to go ahead and say. Teams are over rated.

I've yet to see a tour since '89 where a superior team was able to overcome a superior rider.

Now losing Renshaw and Cav keeps killing them. Makes me question lead out value.

Cav crashed in stage 1 . Stage 4 he sat up and finished 12th. Also if he hadn't adhered to the we are not going to contest the stage in stage 2 Thor would have won as he probably would have taken second.

I've been away this weekend so I am wondering if it is worth watching Sat and Sun? I probably will watch Sun for the interviews but it seems as if all the big contenders didn't do so hot on Saturday.

My team turned out okay with Contador Geesink and Horner in the top 10 and Cav and Canc getting me stage wins the last 2 days so not sure how well I will finish overall.

Sastre's win may have been an example of Team over superior rider, although Contador and Astana were out of that one, he had one tremendous day in the mountains and his team held off attacks, if he had had a bad team who knows but generally in a Tour without a TTT a good team can only help so much.

Yep. Stage 4 is where Cav sat up. Stage 1 he didn't compete for though despite finishing with the group, I'd still pick an 80% Cav to finish in the top ten. Once Cance got le Tour to neutralize the stage two, I think the only guy who got points was Chavanel. I'm guessing the Green jersey won't mean much to Cav until he gets older, until then he can console himself with his forty five stage wins. :)

I think about that Sastre tour as well, but I couldn't really call Cadel or Valverde superior to him. Though he had a serious edge in team strength.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Unfortunately, I didn't heed my own advice, but once again, this tour confirms the fact that you want Cavendish for your fantasy team, no matter what the cost. .

I think you have a shot with all the final value points, I'm guessing your a minimum of second.

Cav is certainly about as sure a thing as you can get at velogames though. Farrar had been a better buy in my opinion, up to this tour of course.

Do you think he will end up with more total points than Pettachi? I don't even know the point total for the green jersey winner. I debated about taking Thor cause I thought he would win green but ended up changing my mind and taking Cav.
