The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

And we're on the Mur de Huy. 1k left.

Rat shack goes, Kloden.

caught. Contador in third, Evans there.

Damm, lost audio. An Euskatel makes his move, followed by Contador, who then drops him. He's maybe 100 meters from the line but is faltering, and then Cadel Evans hauls his way up to his rear wheel, and then passes him in the rainbow jersey, and then comes Joaquin Rodriguez, Evans holds on to cross the line in first.

Contador holds on for third. The Euskatel rider, Anton, finishes fourth.

Nice win for Evans. Good to see him representing the WC stripes well.
Anton is riding very well this spring too.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Any of you guys do any touring on your bikes? I kind of want to do a weeklong nyc to buffalo via albany trip. The problem is I'm poor, I only have my "race" bike and no gear, and am wondering how bad an idea it is to load up a more race geared frame with stuff to go camping for a week.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Probably bad. Maybe not so much in the old days, but today's modern racing frames are built so lightweight, with correspondingly lightweight wheelsets, they probably just aren't strong enough to hold up under a heavy load like that. If you were talking about just a couple panniers on the back, and maybe a handlebar bag, you could probably do it, but if you're hauling sleeping bags, clothes, tent, cookstove, food, even a trailer, etc., it's probably too much.

Not to mention the tighter geometries, and you're probably gonna run into all sorts of problems with heel clearance for the stuff you're hauling. It really wouldn't be geared appropriately enough to slog all that weight up any extended climbs. And without racks and panniers, it's pretty hard to haul all the stuff you'd need to go camping by bike for a week.

The wheels is actually the part i'm most worried about. Its not a top of the line super light bike (probably right around 20lbs) and it has an aluminum frame. I've got a small set of panniers that should have good heel clearance, haven't gotten a rack yet. I guess I should really try to get a touring specific bike. Its just a pain in the *** b/c i'm poor, and live in a tiny apartment in new york city. Kinda just have the itch to get out on a bike for a week straight though. Perhaps i'm better off credit card touring with my bike.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Liege Bastogne Liege this morning on cycling.tv.

Taped coverage of the Fleche Wallone later today at 2:00 on Versus. Liege Bastogne Liege on May 1st.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Just watch L-B-L (in Russian or maybe Polish) and saw quite a race! Vino is back and looks like a monster for the Giro! A bit disappointing for Kolobnev who seems to specialize in 2nd place. Val finishes 3rd. Not the best day for "clean cycling." In fact its been a good week for returning dopers, Ricco, Vino, Basso...

Also Igor Anton had 2 really good races in the Ardennes this weekend, good for him! Romandie next week then the Giro!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Belgian fans booed him at the finish.

Yeah, they weren't too pleased to see him cross the line first...

Horner continues his great spring campaign...getting 8th today.
He's close, just can't seem to get up there with the big guns at the end.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

It doesn't look like Velogames is going to be operational...they still haven't updated despite saying they were going to have the Classics team.

What does everyone think if we use this website instead:

http://tourfantasy.com/

It is free as well, uses a similar points system to Velogames (not quite as many points calculations though...no breakaway points or intermediate sprint points, etc), plus it has teams for the Tour, Giro, California, etc. No leagues though.

It doesn't look like you pick teams based off of sprinters/climbers/domestiques, though, just a 9 rider team within your "money allowance".

Unless someone has a different website that might work better.
Thoughts?

There's also this website:

http://fantasy.cycling-games.com/game/

Which seems more in-depth and widely used. It offers cash prizes but you have to pay .50 Euro per team per race.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

brian,

I'm in for whichever site works better!

Pinotti won the Romandie Prologue with Sagan and Mick Rogers pretty close. Should be a good race. If Sagan sprints like he did earlier in the year, could be his race to win...

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

brian,

I'm in for whichever site works better!

Me too. I usually don't like to pay for stuff, but that price is cheap enough that if that site is the better one then I am all for it!

I looked more at each site.

The TourFantasy site had a grand total of 5 entrants last year for the Tour. So it would essentially be a USCHO league if those numbers were around the same. ;)

The FantasyCycling-Games website is more expensive for the Grand Tours. I registered just to see more details, and it showed the credit system. It also is a bit different in that you select 15 riders total, and then assign 9 riders for each particular stage.

Each credit costs €0.50 (Euros).

You need 21 credits per team for the le Tour game. You need 3 credits per team per race in the Spring Classics races. You need 21 credits per team for the Giro and the Vuelta games.

So we'd be looking at around €10.50 just for one Giro/Tour/Vuelta team. Definitely more expensive than what I thought earlier, but the prizes are nice:

Grand Prize
€250 minimum
+ 50% of Prize Fund

2nd place
€125 minimum
+ 30% of Prize Fund

3rd place
€65 minimum
+ 20% of Prize Fund

Then the 4th place winner in the Grand Tours won a set of Bontrager Race Lite wheels. They had 74 people play during the Classics season, so the odds of getting top 4 aren't that bad.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I entered their Giro and Vuelta leagues a couple times, maybe did the Tour. I know they were doing a season-long league too, where you had a bunch of different riders, and then picked teams depending on the event, one-day guys for the classics, stage racers for the big tours.

I can't do them anymore cause they post their rider list as an Excel link, and IO don't have Excel. They used to post the spreadsheet on a webpage, where I could access it, but not anymore.Good format though.

What's the deal with Velogames, can't afford to keep his site going?

I might just be blind or stupid (maybe both? ;) ), but I couldn't find the link on their main site for the fantasy cycling section.
Do you have a direct link to it, or point me in the right direction? :)

Good question. Maybe he will update it prior to the Giro, but it doesn't look like it based upon his not updating it at all during the Classics.

Haven't been there for a long time, but try this section. They may already have the season long stuff going on, for the major tours, they usually get something together in the weeks before it starts.

Also, scroll down the left side of the page for the top ten VDS teams, and also click on the VDS jersey image to see the whole standings. You may need to sign up for an account to see everything, but it's free.
