College football: Two Dragons cited for fight with Cobbers

Two starters on the Minnesota State Moorhead football team were cited for fleeing police on foot and disorderly conduct after a fight with Concordia players earlier this month.

Timothy Zander and Jeff Schuette were both given citations for fleeing police and disorderly conduct, according to court documents filed last week in Clay County District Court.

Schuette was also cited for consuming alcohol as a minor and possessing fake identification.

Moorhead police Lt. Tory Jacobson said no one else was cited or arrested in connection with the fight, which involved 10 to 12 people according to initial calls to police dispatch.

Reports filed with the citations say that police were called to the Taco Bell on Eighth Street South in Moorhead at about 12:45 a.m. on Sept. 6 on reports of a fight.

Witnesses told police that a fight had broken out in the parking lot between the Dragon and Cobber players over which team is better.

An officer responding to the scene approached two people running through a nearby parking lot. One of the two was chased on foot, stopping in the intersection of Sixth Avenue South and 10th Street South when the officer threatened to use a Taser on him.

Police identified the man as Zander. He had a cut over his left eye and a large amount of blood on his face and hands, according to court documents.

A wallet that was left in the Taco Bell parking lot had blood on it, and police found an MSUM identification card and other cards in the wallet that had Schuette’s name on them. They also found a Montana driver’s license that listed a different name.

Police reached Schuette by telephone and he came back to the taco shop. He admitted to fighting, police said, and to getting a fake ID for $80 on the Internet.

An officer administered a breath test to Schuette, who blew a blood-alcohol concentration of .15, according to police. The legal limit for driving is .08.

Zander is a junior safety for the Dragons. Schuette is a sophomore linebacker.

Both faced in-team discipline for the incident, said MSUM head coach Damon Tomeo. Neither player has been suspended, he said.

Phone messages left on Monday for Zander and Schuette weren’t returned.

Zander and Schuette are both scheduled to make a court appearance on Oct. 6.

NSIC to expand again??

http://www.bemidjipioneer.com/event/article/id/100011887/group/home/

Minot State, Sioux Falls consider NSIC expansion

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- The decision of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference board to consider adding two teams is good news for two schools in the Dakotas.

Both Minot State University in North Dakota and the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota are moving their athletic programs from NAIA to NCAA Division II, and both have expressed interest in the Northern Sun.

Sioux Falls Athletic Director Willie Sanchez says the goal now is to convince the conference that the school is a good fit.

Minot State Athletic Director Rick Hedberg says the two schools are looking at possible Northern Sun membership as a partnership rather than a competition, and are working together.

NSIC Commissioner Butch Raymond says he hasn't had formal talks with any schools about expansion. Schools interested in membership will be asked to submit a letter of interest to the league by next June 1.

The NSIC is a 14-team, 17-sport, NCAA Division II Conference with teams in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Why not Minot?

I wonder how long before they end up splitting up again. I could see Mary, St. Cloud, UMD, Winona, Mankato, Augustana, and maybe Concordia wanting to go to full football scholarships. I don't see the rest of the schools coming close. Maybe Wayne State College too....They're doing well all of a sudden, not sure if they moved their scholarship level up.

I was really surprised that NMU wasn't ranked in the top 25. That lose to Northwood in week 1 really ticks me off. If we beat Ferris State this weekend we should be looking good.

Its a high possiability. The Northern Sun there is getting big, and big conferences just don't tend to stay together long. You could even throw MTU and NMU into the mix there, as with the GLIAC expanding more into Ohio, they might want to go to more Minnesota based league for the easier travel. They like coming downstate right now to connect with their alums there, but lousy Ohio schools might make them look more into another almost WCHA type league perhaps.

God you are a freaking homer! 3 weeks into the season and here you are thinking that NMU should be ranked in the top 25. Tiffin and Tech have yet to win a game this year, and those are the Wildcats only two wins on the year. Ferris is corrently winless as well. Lets see NMU get past Saggy in 2 weekends before we start talking about weither or not Northern Michigan should be appearing in D2Football.com's Top 25!

So if Bemidji State, UMD, Mankato, and St. Cloud State joined Tech and Northern Michigan we could have the WCHA football conference!?? :D

Bemidji State knocked off the #20 team(Winona State) and lost in OT to the ranked MSU Mankato and aren't ranked either with a 3-1 record.(This directed to Billy boy...)

Re: The 2009 Division 2 Football thread - Or How I Still HATE Minnesota-Duluth!!

I know, I know, it's just been sooooooo long since NMU had even a "decent" football team. I am getting a tad bit overzealous. If we beat Ferris and Saginaw Vally, we should be in the top 25 at that point.

Re: The 2009 Division 2 Football thread - Or How I Still HATE Minnesota-Duluth!!

That is messed up. I went there when they went two and a half years, or something crazy like that, without a win.

I remember that because I remember Mankato coming up to Bemidji and losing. Their fans were mad at the guy playing the music because it was too loud for Mankato on third downs. Gotta love home field advantage....

I think it was more about a team with 36 scholarships losing to a team with 12-13 scholarships.

I do also remember later that night crashing a wedding reception at the Hampton and doing a beer bong through the ice sculptor....Only in Bemidji...

They are okay. Although, 70% of the teams in the Gliac would beat them.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The GLIAC is the Pac 10 of D2, except they really are only one team deep.

More or less, in theory. It would be a little more likely they bring back the NCC title perhaps, add a little more flair to their conference stature about what they feel the conference is. And if more of the Canadian schools join the NCAA, it woudn't be a big stretch for Manitoba and Lakehead perhaps to look at the new WCHAFB/NCC conference.

Well, perhaps maybe "also receiving votes" perhaps. The rest of the month of October will tell us if the Cat's are legit, or just the lucky beneficiaries of lucky scheduling. Would have to say the schedule looks to be in the Wildcats favor. After the tough roadie to Saggy, you get back to back home dates against Wayne State and Hillsdale. Then a run to Ohio to the crap that Findlay plays on. Those idiots down there left their 3 foot crown in when they installed their field turf. The corner of the end zones all drop down fast to meet up with the track around it. Easily worst stadium in the GLIAC right now and more than likely that's going to get some WR or DB really hurt. And then, on All Hallow's Eve, when Monster's Lurk, NMU comes to Allendale to put their name to the test. NMU manages to only lose to GV during that stretch and a Playoff implications game with Indy could be in the works to finish off the regular season at the Yooperdome. Might not be able to actually make the playoffs given that NMU doesn't have a non-conference game on their schedule this year and they also duck Ashland, but the outcome of the game there could have a lot of say in who the 6th team in the region is.

They are okay. Although, 70% of the teams in the Gliac would beat them.
http://www.d2messageboard.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1Billy, the Nick Strance Brigade of Ashland could use a break from being the resident GLIAC whipping boys. ;) :D

Hardly! The GLIAC's SoCal doesn't trip over the league's doormat every year. :p

Re: The 2009 Division 2 Football thread - Or How I Still HATE Minnesota-Duluth!!

From what I've seen of the GLIAC's doormats, they shouldn't even be fielding a team. Trinity Bible could beat those clowns. They are to football what Charlie Brown's teams are to baseball.

When have you ever watched a football game involving a doormat from the GLIAC. I call shenanigans!! :p
