Re: The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey
Couple of unashamedly biased notes:
1. Ovechkin won't be suspended. Why? He's one of the NHL's "untouchables" along with Malkin and SidJesus CrosChrist. He surely deserves it.
2. Wild might stink this year, but I have to say the following message: Latendresse for Pouliot was a masterpiece by Minnesota. Ok, both are about equal this year in offensive production, but Latendresse has shown a history of actually scoring goals. Pouliot has shown a history of not being able to stick with the NHL team. There was scuttlebutt going around that had the word "bust" attached to Pouliot. Though hindsight is 20/20, I can say this is another example how Risebrough was an idiot. He could have gotten Devon Setoguchi if he wanted him AND he could have traded down to do it (which could have given him more draft picks). But who cares now. He's the Canadiens' problem.
Kudos to Fletcher for making this trade. Not a block buster by any means, but it's a small step in the right direction.
3. The 'Hawks are not overrated, but Huet is playing that way. Good for the Hawks.
4. I wish Osgood would play that way (overrated) because then he'd be playing better than he currently is. When he wants to be, is motivated to do so, we see the type of play that has gotten him to so much success, but the last two years he's played so uninspired at times that they buy into that crap the media is spewing from their mouths ("They'd be better if they were healthy"). Great teams find a way to win despite setbacks. I'm just glad I don't watch many Red Wing games that are commentated by the homer broadcasters like I've had with Pittsburgh. It's the same thing with them. If they win, it's because they overcame the injuries. If they lost, it's because of the injuries. When my Wings lose, it's because the other team played better. When the Wings win, it's because we played better than they did. I'd fail as a commentator... I'm not homer enough in that area.
