While I tend to like Jon's posting,

This is the most troubling part of your post.

Let's face it: this is hockey. If the Bruins could somehow figure out how to play stingy defense in the playoffs and get their goaltender hot, they can win a cup, regardless of how crappy the scoring is. This isn't like basketball where you need an all star in 3 positions or baseball where you need power pitching and hitting or even football where you need a great defense and an above average QB (well, maybe just Trent Dilfer). Jacobs and company suck at what they do, but the team can still win.

Jon, the only way this team wins a Cup is if Ken Dryden circa 1976-79 gets reincarnated in Tim Thomas. If that is indeed the plan, great. If not, they will continue to be 0-for-our lifetimes in terms of Stanley Cups, which is amazing when you think of the teams that have won even since their last appearance in the finals (Carolina, Tampa, Anaheim, etc).

The kid from the OHL who laid that huge hit I posted a day or two ago was suspended by the league for the rest of the season and the playoffs. His career in the OHL is now over because this was his last year in juniors.

That's a brutal overreaction by the league.

Re: The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey

That's not the cleanest hit in the world, but I've seen worse. There's got to be some more history behind this kid that we don't know about for them to shut his lights off like that.

Re: The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey

I posted a video of Liambas running Tavares from behind last year, and his PIM over the last few years lead me to believe there is some history of trouble with this kid. YouTube "Liambas" and you get a number of questionable hits and a plethora of fight videos.

Still, that hit, standing on its own, does not warrant a season-ending suspension.

History should be taken into account. People get upset when the NHL doesn't hand out longer suspensions to repeat offenders/lets first time offenders off easy...and now the same people (person) are (is) upset when a league actually has the balls to say 'enough is enough you useless goon,' kinda ironic. :D

Re: The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey

Its a phenomenon I haven't seen in any other team's fans in all of professional sports. Despite continued losing, poor drafting, bad roster moves etc, B's fans will continue to believe that 1) the team is on the cusp of greatness, and 2) management (be it Sinden, O'Connell, or Chiarelli) is competent. This allows their stingy owner to line his pockets while not putting the best product possible on the ice.

The team's fans are passionate, the team tries. No argument on either. But trying doesn't = winning. All that needs to happen now to complete the cycle is a whispering campaign against the coach, followed by him getting turfed in the off season even though he's not the one picking the players.

This sounds an awful lot like the Buffalo Bills! :o

The other issue with this is that its evidence of an apparent obvious caste system in the OHL. Liambis is an over-age junior and he's busy running kids who are potential/current NHL prospects. I suspect that his history has a lot more to do with being banned for the rest of the year but its also the case of a no-talent, no-future kid getting tossed for being the big reckless bully and hurting the league itself by having quality kids getting lit up by future nobodies.

Hey now, the Bruins might take him.

Here's the money quote from OHL Commissioner Dave Branch:

"Players must understand they shall be held accountable for their actions," OHL commissioner David Branch said in a statement. "We must all work towards improving the level of respect players have towards opposing players and the game in general."

My thoughts exactly! There is little respect in today's game compared to years ago -- from the NHL right down to Peewee. :(

Here's a chuckle for all you Kessel lovers/haters:

There are better videos on youtube now with sound. The volume of the *THUD* makes me cringe.
