Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

It'd be interesting to see your version of Cliff's Notes.

You'd probably tell us Tom Robinson was really the killer, the Duke and the King go back to their thrones in Europe and Gatsby lives until a ripe old age.
I don't do Cliff notes. Cliff bars are good though.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Kinda hard to do anything when certain people believe compromise is a dirty word.

Sometimes the solution to a problem is not playing and doing nothing. business like certainty with grid-lock in congress. If Obama/democrats would stop caving in.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Regardless of your stance on global warming, you'd think one could be for the reduction of industrial emissions simply out of the common sense view that all such emissions are, by definition, waste.

Not at all - anything that adds costs for the job creators is verboten. :p
Well, keep up with the emisions and it keeps healthcare workers employed anyway. THe hell with global warming - look as resp rates and asthma rates near big emitors. Ironically Arizona used to be the recommended place to move many yrs ago but the polution coming across from Calif has actually made that a place to recommend against medically. When Atlanta closed things down for the Olympics the ER visit rate for asthma/resp issues dropped so dramatically it made the medical journals.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

It's too convenient to blame emissions - since in my estimation, air quality in this country has improved over the years (which runs contrary to the rising incidence of asthma). That means indoor air - and whatever is contaminating/polluting it - would very likely be the source of this problem. As it turns out, my speculation may in fact be correct: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/02/12/new-risk-factors-linked-to-asthma-rise/ - note the mention of indoor aerosols and the really bizarre one (to me, anyway) of decreased aspirin use / increased acetaminophen.

INteresting but notsurprising. Febreeze immediately comes to mind. I wasn't saying it is the only cause but it is well documented that pollutants/emisions exposure increases sx. The Arizona thing fascinates me. People used to routinely be told to go there if they had poor respiratory health but then the crap from Calif was wafting over the mtns and poof the health benefit wasn't so impressive any more. There's a guy at BU (I think) that has done loads of analysis re Vit D. He postulates this is the reason people in lower lattitudes are sig more likely to have better outcomes in chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, various autoimmune disorders and stuff like MS that those of us up in the north.

Les-the book on vitamin D has yet to be written. I have seen so many conflicting studies to recommend it and to recommend against it. Honestly, I don't think anyone knows. I take some every day, but then again I take a lot of crap. For patients, I tell them I just don't know yet. As far as moving to Arizona-if someone has a myriad of symptoms and lives around here-I have always suggested to them that they move away. Every place i suggest though has it's own negatives whether it be Florida, Arizona, etc. Best place to live may just be wherever you have the least symptoms.;)

Carpeting, laundry detergents, cleaning stuff and all kinds of other crap. I have a tight house but I have no carpet and I'm not afraid to open a door to get some fresh air in during the winter.

THe thought of spraying sh it into the air/pluggin it in or those automatic sprayers to make it smell right just loses me. I cannot fathom how people do not connect that with breathing chemical soup. Yick.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

All this idle speculation about the dangers of Fabreeze could lead to depressed sales at Proctor & Gamble. Cease and desist!

This isn't meant to be a smartass response so please don't take it as one, but how do you feel about candles and incense?

Just as bad
What wally said. I can't breath with them- my nose runs, my eyes water and I start to cough. I can't remember when the craze for the air needing to be altered to make it better but my lungs hate it. Why can't the air just smell like air?

Because we men like to eat things like chili and bbq which leads to lots of air pollution.

Ok, I was just curious. Honestly, I'm with you, but not necessarily for the same reasons. I just think most air fresheners and candles smell awful.

I really don't get how people do not connect that with extra crap floating around in the air!

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

To be fair, most of those particles in Febreeze are relatively heavy and sink. This becomes even more true when wet Febreeze particles begin colliding with dust particles and absorbing their weight.

I'm not sure I'd be so quick to associate these particles with increased asthma rates so much as other environmental causes.

No, that was just a rant not connected to the emissions thing.
