Team USA--WJC

Thanks for the link to the blog.

Any predictions/hopes/expectations for the US team? Who's the favorite?

I think Canada is normally the favorite in this every year. I think Finland is the major darkhorse though as they have looked very impressive so far.

If the US can stay out of the box and get consistent scoring they'll be a threat to at the very least medal and an outside shot to win it.

This team is talented. Especially from the goal out and as long as they buy into that and like I said, STAY OUT OF THE FREAKING box, they'll be alright.

Trouba and Jones are about as good as it gets on the blue line.

Gaudreau, Galenchyk, Grimaldi, Miller etc have got to score. I wonder how much Noesen would have helped this team. I have to imagine he would have Atleast given the US another option and he probably would have been the #2 line center.

Re: Team USA--WJC

Team has a solid chance at a medal but the gold will be tough....right now Canada is 1A and Russia is 1B though keep an eye on Finland.
Team Canada is my pick. Their line up is littered with 1st round picks. Russia is probably 1B as you suggest. With these 2 powerhouses in the same group as Team USA, I'm not feeling very confident. But then again, I was sure we would medal last year.:o

No question Canada is stacked and the clear cut favorite on paper but anything can happen in a short tourney....while no team really comes close to matching Canada's talent, chemistry and discipline are and will be a major concern for them....

Russia's forwards are as talented as Canada's but their D is somewhat lacking although strong goaltending will address that...

USA has to fire on all cylinders and have a lot of luck on their side for a gold medal...but again in a short tourney, anything can happen.

Re: Team USA--WJC

The NHL lockout means Canada has the best collection of future NHLers but in exhibition games they have looked terrible and very undisciplined. The coach is from the Kitchener Rangers and he's a good junior coach but with all the pressure on Team Canada he looks in over his head. He was unable to reign in one loose cannon who should have be sent home after a dirty hit on a Swede the other night (that put the Swede out of the tournament). These kids need a "name" with NHL experience to get their attention, just like Brent Sutter, Pat Quinn etc.. The Russians on the other hand have been together for awhile now and at the Subway Series this November they looked ready to go. They are my favourites for Gold.

Re: Team USA--WJC

Apparently the 24 remaining traveled to Russia, but still no word on the last cut that I've seen.

Re: Team USA--WJC

Looking at the roster, grezclyk would be the shortest dman. That's probably their concern.

I think if the kids look at his stats they will respect him. Also these teams have such little time together that they don't have enough time to be coached up.

I agree. If your an American kid who can't get up to play for Phil Housley and your country, then not sure what will motivate you.

Re: Team USA--WJC

I'm a little confused. Thought Team USA only had to make 1 more cut a defenseman. But the roster to the IIHF includes only 6 on the blue line. Missing are Matt Grzelcyk from BU and Patrick Sieloff with the Sarnia Sting.

I had read Sieloff might be on the bubble and there was concern about Grzelcyk's size, 5'9". But why cut 2 if you only need to cut 1???

Read the previous posts. If those posts are correct, they haven't cut two, they are deciding which of the two will go on the final roster.

Re: Team USA--WJC

Question: is Tony Camranesi (UMD) too old to play in this event? A little concerned by speed (or lack thereof) in USA line-up and he'd be an asset. Only two 'Sota boys on 2013 squad, in stark contrast to 2010 Gold Medal squad with Kristo, Gardiner, Stepan, Schroeder and tender Lee.

Or 1960 Olympic Gold Medal team (Tom Williams, Paul Johnson, Roger Christian, Bill Christian, Bob Own, John Mayasich, Jack McCarten, and Dick Meredith). Or 1980 Olympic Gold Medal team (Mark Johnson, Rob McClanahan, Steve Christoff, Neal Broten, Mark Pavelich, Phil Verchota, Buzz Schneider, Eric Strobel, Dave Christian, John Harrington, Mike Ramsey, Bill Baker, and Steve Janaszak).
