Super Bowl LI: Puppies, Commercials, And Some Football Too

Re: Super Bowl LI: Puppies, Commercials, And Some Football Too

This would mean more if Patriots fans actual existed prior to 2001.
The Patriots went to a Super Bowl in the 80s. The Patriots went to a Super Bowl in the 90s. In fact, the Patriots along with the Giants and the Steelers are the only franchises that have gone to at least one Super Bowl in the 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s. That's four(4) decades of Super Bowl appearances running. Yes, newbies.

The Ads. My top 5:

1 Bud Light (Ghost Spuds)
2 T-Mobile (Punished)
3 84Lumber (Journey)
4 Airbnb (#weaccept)
5 Budweiser (Hard Way)

1. Budweiser (Hard Way)
2. Mr. Clean
3. World of Tanks

I don't remember most of the rest because there were so many **** kids in the house and the host had the tv on low volume.

I lived in New England from 2000 to 2006. The number of self proclaimed lifelong Patriots fans increased about 20-fold in that time frame

And the fans seemed to completely disappear after the woeful years following that 80s Super Bowl, and then again in the 90s. Or at least they went very, very quiet. Kinda like they were huntin' wabbits.

Outside of Boston, the number of Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox fans have increased on the order of a million times what they were before the 2000s. You couldn't find a Red Sox hat in the Twin Cities before 2003 if you tried. After the run they made? I still see at least two people in Boston gear at every Twins game.

Same thing with the Cubs, for that matter. The number of lifelong fans has grown to an absurd level. I grew up watching them on WGN but wasn't really a fan until my mom brought me back a hat from Wrigley when I was in something like sixth or seventh grade. I'm not a lifelong Cubs fan, but I've been a fan for a while. After they won, people were crying and celebrating like the Gophers had just won a national title again.

I expect next year to see half as many Red Sox hats and five times as many Cubs hats.

It's unfortunate that they only include commercials during the game. These are good, and I'll let them finish, but Hyundai took the crown this year. /Kanye

(commercial posted earlier if you didn't see it).

The difference is that New England was full of actual Red Sox fans before they won it all, just as there were tons of lifelong cubs fans in the Midwest (and throughout the country) thanks to WGN. Those fans can't control the bandwagon.

There was no underlying base of support for the Patriots prior to their current run, even in their own backyard.

What, a team went on a dynastic run of championships and dramatically increased their fan base? Get out...

No, that's never happened anywhere but New England. All of those rabid and die hard 49er fans packing Candlestick in the 60s just waiting for Montana to show up. Or the sudden emergence from witness protection programs of all those lifelong Blackhawks fans over the past 8 or so years...

It happens

The Patriots went to a Super Bowl in the 80s.

And had zero fans. I lived there then.

The Patriots went to a Super Bowl in the 90s.

Still living there, they still have no fans, and don't even have their coach for that SB. The Pat were a joke in the Boston area from incept date to as recently as 2000. When people cut on the Sawx for not having loyal fans they'd always respond, "Yeah, well at least we're better than the Rots," and then drool and curse in some dopey Irish street slang that made the real Irish roll their eyes.

I'll bet there were fewer fans of the Patriots than the Cowboys, Giants, and Steelers in New England all the way up til the bandwagon left in '01. Maybe even the Jets. And that's scraping the bottom.

New England was Red Sox territory first and foremost, through thick and thin. The Patriots weren't even an afterthought until 2001. That's the difference.

Re: Super Bowl LI: Puppies, Commercials, And Some Football Too

dx - There were tons Red Sox and White Sox hats galore in the TC in the 90's and they could all burn in hell. :)

Re: Super Bowl LI: Puppies, Commercials, And Some Football Too

Haven't seen it mentioned, but here's a good one if you haven't come across it yet.

Tennis star Eugenie Bouchard made a bet when the score was 28-3 with a fan that if the Pats came back to win, she would go on a date with him. Obviously, it happened, and she's actually following through and holding up her side of the deal. She stated on some Canadian Sports show that she'll likely fly him to a tournament or wherever she is, with her busy schedule, but he has to be the gentleman and plan a fun date night.

Lots of boston hate on here, 37 titles in the major pro sports according to Bob Ryan, that will bring the haters out.

The teams from the area haven't ever bothered me. It's the loud, obnoxious Massholefans that are all the problem.

The few poster who claimed they lived there for a few years still act like m*******s, must have rubbed off.

Re: Super Bowl LI: Puppies, Commercials, And Some Football Too

We were sitting on all those Celtics titles back then!

Oh, we existed. Sat through a lot of crap teams, idiot GM's, and horrible owners during that time, too.

And yet, their stadium was always full.

Not a problem just cause they're fans. They could hate sports. They're a problem simply because they're M*******s.
