Suny cortland season thread 1.

Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.

Its gameday! as the Dragons get ready for puck drop against a very tough Oswego team...Cortland's going to have to be very disciplined and play out of their minds for a shot at this one but one way or the other its hockey sason!

When are they getting rid of that coach there seriously...i used to be part of that program and he doesnt even play the best players.
Most of the guys question everything he does and he continues to lose all the time. Time for a change there for sure. A good young
energetic coach is what they need there at Cortland.

Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.

They've played one game so far this season against an easily top 5 team and you want to fire the coach already. This team was looking pretty good near the end of last season shuting out plattsburgh and going into overtime with oswego. They may not have had the best record last year but they were definitely IN every game I followed them playing.

They were only in any game because of Kuhlman. They were 1-5-0 in their last 6. They were out shot nearly a 2 to 1 margin. Once again Kuhlman kept Cortland in the game, but didn't have the talent around him to put anything by Oswego.

Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.

Nice win against Hobart last night boys (even though you don't have any talent!!!). :D

PS Kuhls was on the bench last night...

Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.

Im talking about the body of work for this coach...5 years there and i think 8 wins is the most hes had in one season!

You beat Hobart...want a cookie? A Hobart team that will probably finish last in the ECAC West....What ever thrills ya and makes you forget about the 6-0 thrashing you got the night before. If it makes you sleep better at night I guess congrats. Nice to see Cortlands maintained their high discipline record too...

How did Cortland look this weekend?
Unfortunately i can only offer some sort of opinion on the Saturday loss, but from what ive heard they played a very solid game, played a more disciplined game than they have in some time (only 3 or 4 penalties, all successfully killed) and were in it till the very end but just couldnt bury the one more puck they really needed. Seems to me that they have been playing a much more competitive brand of hockey and finally finding ways to win games and give themselves a chance to win where in recent years they have failed. Sorry i can't add too much more to that...maybe The Judge can offer more than i can.

How did Cortland look this weekend?

Interesting weekend starting with Brockport on Friday: The Red Dragons statred out in dominating style for most of the first period but kind of stalled due to some questionable goaltending. It's a funny thing how a team responds when thier goalie plays w/o confidence, it's usually not good. All 5 of Brockports goals came over a 13 shot span (3 shots in the 1st = 1 goal, 10 shots in the 2nd = 4 goals) it seemed everything Brockport threw at the net went in before he figured it out, I was in shock that Baldy let him finish. Cortland traded goals for most of the game and it was never really out of reach for either team. Although I'm not sure what to make of this game, a 7 to 5 win is a win non the less, no cookies once again...Some positives I saw was the lines are beginning to jell and the the freshman look like they're getting comfortable with the speed and level of play.

Saturday's game proved to be much more entertaining although our goalie from the previous night got the start but played a much much better game. Geneseo is a pretty speedy team with a lot of talented kids. The first three goals were scored by Genny and thoughts were that the flood gates had opened in thier favor, not so fast...Cortland scores in the closing seconds of the second period to close the gap to two. The third period saw some end to end action with Cortland playing an agressive desperate style and IMHO carried the play. Cortland scores a shortie midway threw the 3rd to pull to within one, but Genny answers with a shortie of thier own to win the game 4-2. Great action by both teams. I left the game feeling pretty positive despite the lose. The play of the freshmen Zappia and LaRose, and sophs Virgoe and Nardi stood out. Especially impressed with the improved puck movement for the back line. There is a lot of talent on this team despite what some seem to think and as the season moves forward I hope to see some great things from this group. On the down side the team is in desperate need of a shut down goaltender, one that can steal games. Although the current goalies have had thier (great) moments, its usually a toss up on how they'll play on any given night. Baldy continues to play the position by committee; you win you play, you lose you watch. Don't understand it, but then again I don't have 299 wins.

SUNYAC's MEN’S ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE goes to Cortland's Nick Zappia

Nick Zappia scored the game-winning goal 1:20 into overtime in Cortland's 6-5 win at Brockport on Friday. He also pulled Cortland to within one goal at 5-4 with his goal late in the second period. On Saturday at Geneseo, Zappia scored Cortland's first goal of the game. For the season, Zappia has 11 points on eight goals and three assists

Re: Red Dragons? ... I'm a believer.

What a disappointing season for the Red Dragons. A few of us at the school (a very select few) have made it to most of the games the past couple of season and I think we had our hope too high for this season. With so many seniors and some other important pieces returning I really thought we would at least make the playoffs. We added some good forwards and a few good d but in the end it was not enough to make that push into the playoffs. Now I never played at anywhere close to a level that these guys currently play but it seems like at the end of the year the team was playing very uninspired hockey. Can anyone tell me the rule on the amount of players that can dress for a game? It seems like we had a lot of guys not dressing towards the end of the year and even only started dressing 2 goalies about the last month or so. I really hope that the team can turn it around next year and make a push for the playoffs. Our school has such a strong tradition in sports, it is just hard to stomach that my favorite sport is about the only program on campus without much success.

Most teams dress: 2 -- 3 goalies, six D and 12 F. Sometimes 7 D and 11 F.

Ok thanks. I wasn't sure the exact number that could actually sit on the bench. I was just confused because they dressed 3 goalies most of the year and then only went with two and the scratched goalie was not sitting with the rest of the team. Maybe he was injured? Who knows. Hopefully we can bring in a few guys to make a playoff push. The following at the school is awful but I think if the team would actually win a few games then the attendance would start to go up.

Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.

I think the best solution is a change at the helm. Obviously Coach Baldarotta has had his chance to turn it around and it is only getting worse there.
Cortlands hockey program should be great just like all the other athletic teams at the school. They are in the syracuse area and right by the ontario jr a
leagues. Maybe he just doesnt recruit hard enough

Really? A team that has how many playoff wins in how many years and its the coaches problem? Losing is not something that's new to Cortland. The 24 wins at Cortland matches the most wins in a five year period at Cortland.

Second, while I will not dispute the tradition Cortland athletics this is HOCKEY. It's a very unique sport in which the majority of your "quality player pool" is located north of the border eh. You can NOT get the grade A recruits when you already have three strikes against you:

1) You're in a league with Plattsburgh and Oswego
2) Your school doesn't offer the generious FA packages like other fellow SUNYAC schools do
3) Putting it nicely, your team has s***ed for years......

When the school wants to put you behind the 8-ball before you even leave the locker room its hard to put together a competitive team year in year out, no matter who the coach is. I for one was excited to see Coach Baldarotta picked for the Cortland job as I thought it would become a little better, but it just goes to show not even some of the best coaches EVER can turn a program around that has no interest in turning around.

Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.

Wow I was not aware that our school was so far behind in hockey. What I'm confused about is how you are saying other SUNYAC schools are giving financial aid packages and Cortland is not. Are these considered scholarships? I was under the assumption that athletes could get no money in division 3.

24 wins over 5 years is not very impressive. I understand that the SUNYAC is a tough league but averaging less than 5 wins a year is not acceptable. So PSUChamps2001, what you are saying is that it is not our coach? That it is just in fact that we have inferior players? If that is the case then why is he not out trying to get some players from canada to help the team out. From what you are saying Cortland doesn't care about hockey. But at what point are the players no longer blamed for the demise of the program and the coach become accountable?

Im not saying its the coach's fault or the players. Just the previous reply's are on both ends of the spectrum so I really have no idea what to believe. Would a new coach make that much of a difference anyways?
