Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.
More than one person thinks Baldy may not be the right guy for the job. Baldy has a fantastic background but perhaps he just isnt the right guy for the Red Dragons. Im not very closely tied to the D3 game as im a highschooler that just began having interest in the program last year so i wont say much beyond that as id be talking out of the rear. I know Cortland may never back the hockey program as much as football or lacrosse, but what they need is someone that can smooth talk the brass of the school and get support in small steps. Seth Appert, the coach at RPI has semi-successfully been able to do this, getting major renovations underway in the rink, some of which were nor in the plan, and recruit talent has gone up in Troy, bringing the team back to the NCAA tourney for the first time since 95. Some early departures (and major graduation losses) left a hole in the lineup, which can partially explain the tough stretch they had in the first half of this year. The reason i said that is if you dont have a coach/AD that are able to play the few cards they have just right to slowly build support, a struggling program like Cortland/RPI will never go anywhere. I cant speak for Baldy but it seems to me the AD doesnt give a darn about hockey and i highly doubt anything will change until the admins or athletic department enter a new regime. As i said i dont have much to add but thats just my 2 cents
When are they getting rid of that coach there seriously...i used to be part of that program and he doesnt even play the best players.
Most of the guys question everything he does and he continues to lose all the time. Time for a change there for sure. A good young
energetic coach is what they need there at Cortland.
I think the best solution is a change at the helm. Obviously Coach Baldarotta has had his chance to turn it around and it is only getting worse there.
Cortlands hockey program should be great just like all the other athletic teams at the school. They are in the syracuse area and right by the ontario jr a
leagues. Maybe he just doesnt recruit hard enough
Really? A team that has how many playoff wins in how many years and its the coaches problem? Losing is not something that's new to Cortland. The 24 wins at Cortland matches the most wins in a five year period at Cortland.
Second, while I will not dispute the tradition Cortland athletics this is HOCKEY. It's a very unique sport in which the majority of your "quality player pool" is located north of the border eh. You can NOT get the grade A recruits when you already have three strikes against you:
1) You're in a league with Plattsburgh and Oswego
2) Your school doesn't offer the generious FA packages like other fellow SUNYAC schools do
3) Putting it nicely, your team has s***ed for years......
When the school wants to put you behind the 8-ball before you even leave the locker room its hard to put together a competitive team year in year out, no matter who the coach is. I for one was excited to see Coach Baldarotta picked for the Cortland job as I thought it would become a little better, but it just goes to show not even some of the best coaches EVER can turn a program around that has no interest in turning around.
