Suny cortland season thread 1.

Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.

Do Cortland fans really get excited? I mean in all seriousness until you see the headlines of "New Administration Focusing on Hockey for the **** season" is there any reason to get excited? Or is going from 5 games under .500 to 3 games under .500 reason for excitement? Gotta give you Red Dragon fans credit, you (for the most part) stick with your team. It's just amazing that such a sport school like Cortland, the Admins don't see the writing on the walls on how to build a successful DIII hockey program. Maybe not on par with Plattsburgh or Oswego, but my gosh Brockport has passed Cortland, Buff State has passed Cortland. They understand how to be successful in DIII. You almost thought that bringing in Baldy the Admins "might" be leaning that way...yea um not. You can have a nice building, nice school, blah blah blah but with zero history and not opening your pocket books (AKA FA packages), the list will always be slim pickn's. As I've said before, what Baldy has done with his hands being tied says a lot about a coach (minus his lack of discipline for cheap shot players)

I'd get excited if they added HEAT!!!!

Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.

I dont get the whole Cortland thing, they have excellent athletics, and I bet if they tried could field a good/better team than the past with all american kids if the Canadian thing is the problem, it must be the higher-ups that dont give a *(&^

How did the Jamaican Bobsled team do? As we discussed in the nescac thread its nearly impossible to run a sucessfull DIII team with out our friends to the north. The US Junior system and USA hockey has grown some, but the pool of players is just much bigger in Canada and those American prospects are picked up quickly by DI. When you have more to pick from the bigger the chance you have to find a DI type player who slipped through the crack so to speak.

Which is what exactly? Miss the playoffs 5 years in a row? Win only 3 league games last year (2 against last place Morrisville)? Average about 6 wins a season in those 5 years? I understand that maybe he doesnt have the resources other schools have, but at what point will this mediocrity no longer be accepted?

When the Lacrosse, Basketball, Baseball and Football teams start to take a nose dive and the school has to rely on the hockey team to make some money and win some championships.

And all this time I thought it was all about Matthew 5:5.

Unofficially official, Baldy has decided to retire, players have been notified.

One of the best moves Baldy has ever made. He derserved to coach at a much better place then Cortland. A place where they actually care about hockey. Congrats Baldy. One of DIII's best ever!

By the timing of this I'd say Baldy had nothing to do with this decision.

Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.

Retired, asked to leave, who cares? Baldy is out of that dump. As I said, he deserved better.

Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.

He didn't do anything to enhance his reputation as a coach, that's for sure. I've heard that he thought the players would line up to come there once he was named the coach. It obviously didn't happen. Even with limited resources he should have been able to squeak in to the SUNYAC playoffs once in a while. Even Cranfield did that !!

Cranfield also coached during a time when Brockport and Buff State were living on bringing in US/NY players. Had Brockport and Buff State got on the FA truck years ago, they wouldn't have been the laugh of the SUNYAC for years. Baldy also shut out Plattsburgh, in Plattsburgh. How many times did Cranfield do that? All of Cranfields wins over Plattsburgh came during Plattsburghs years they didn't have FA. I think it was more Cortland hiring Baldy made you think that MAYBE the admin was ready to support their hockey program, not. I don't care who you bring into that school, with out the support and aid, Cortland will always struggle just to make the SUNYAC playoffs. You would think after so many years of living in the cellar they would get the hint that maybe they are doing something wrong, or not doing something all together.

Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.

Maybe the administration has been listening to my complaints! Well, I feel this is a step in the right direction for the program. My only concern now is who takes over the team with school starting in just a few short weeks?

What complaints? The fact you had one of the best DIII coaches of all time, and couldn't do much? Like I said, you could bring in Scotty Bowman and that team would struggle to make the playoffs with out the administration putting funds into the hockey program and allowing coaches to compete on the same level as the other teams in the SUNYAC can, let alone DIII. What's the selling point "Hey we are a good school with an awesome athletic program *cough cough mumbles except for hockey cough cough*, but you don't get the proper funding or support from us to field a competitive team, but as long as you just want a paycheck and be laughed at by the other conference teams, come coach for us. Look on the bright side you get to always enjoy a break at the end of February because your season is over. And you get to watch some of the best DIII Football, Soccer, Basketball, Lacrosse. We will however give you an extra bonus to buy much needed thermal underwear for your home games."??

Re: Suny cortland season thread 1.

Looking at his coaching record on USCHO, he really hasnt done much since the early 90's. What he accomplished then was very impressive, but how much weight does that carry? Does that make it ok for him to have 6 losing seasons in a row?

And you say that Cranfield didnt do anything? If I am correct the only season Balderotta made the playoffs was his first season, which would make almost all those players Cranfield's.

Im sure he was a nice guy. But enough was enough. As was stated before, Cortland wont ever be on par with Oswego or Plattsburgh, but they shouldnt be getting bypassed by Buff St, Fredonia, Brockport and Morrisville.

Here is to a fresh start!

And when are you going to realize that until the Admin allows a coach to recruit Canadians and give out FA packages you will ALWAYS be bypassed?? It doesn't matter WHO the coach is, and no Im not talking about Plattsburgh/Oswego, I'm talking about Buff State, Fredonia, Brockport, Morrisville.

I think the days are gone when the only way to win is to stack the team with Canadians. Besides NY taxpayers fund the SUNY system and therefore it is only fair to recruit the majority Americans, especially New Yorkers if they are qualified.

Cortland give a $2,300+ scholarship to every non-NYS undergrad, foreign or domestic.

You're joking right?
