Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

I didn't see that breakdown, just the aggregate record, but it should be easy enough.

That'd be really awesome. Those outer years, especially the late 80s when the Russians started defecting/coming over would make a difference, IMO.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

And looking at the years of 79-80 or 80-81- whichever season the game was put into- that was the USSR's ONLY loss of the entire season. For 3 seasons in a row, the team only lost one game. Heck, from the 78-79 season through the 83-84 season, they averaged one loss per season. For a 139-7-10 record. That's pretty amazing. 17 non wins out of 156 chances.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

That is a good point. UConn is friggin' amazing. With respect to the Vols, I'd say UConn is the best women's b-ball program ever, and outside of those two programs, it's not even close.

ESPN2 sure went overboard last night on the South Carolina - UConn women's game, hyping # 1 vs # 2. An hour of pre-game chatter about the game before the game, then the game, then two half-hour shows about Auriemma, Dailey, and the program.

The game itself? it was close for the first 10 minutes, South Carolina had an 18 - 16 lead. Halftilme? UConn, 47 - 31. Final, UConn, 87 - 62. In # 1 vs # 2 games, UConn is now 17-3.

I like watching UConn women's basketball, when we first moved to Connecticut their games were televised on CT public television, and that was the beginning of the Diana Taurasi era. They play a really visually pleasing style, offense is crisp and efficient, lots of backdoor cuts, they have an assist on about 3/4 of their baskets, and the rest of the baskets typically are steals for breakaways. Their defense is really fun to watch as well, it is sort of like watching a boa constrictor in action. There is that fascination about whether the prey will escape or get strangled in slow motion.

Given that, ESPN2 really went overboard on their hype and their slobbering sycophancy. Sure, they are based in Bristol and all, but where were they before their marketing team decided that women's sports were the next growth area?

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

I can understand how you have that point of view. And honestly, yeah, the Canadians were dirty in that series, and I can understand the Russians' complaints (actually just ordered the Summit Series off of Amazon). I'd beech, too, if that happened to my teammate. From a neutral person for that series...the Russians ran into physical hockey for the first time, and they didn't know how to deal with it, IMO. I bet if one of them fought back, actually fought back, got into a scrapper with one of the Canadians...the series might have been different.
You'll enjoy the Summit Series, but personally I really got a kick out of HBO's documentary on the Philadelphia Flyers, and in particular, the segment on the 1976 NHL series against the Russians.

As I recall, the Russian Red Army team had basically clobbered 2 or 3 of the top NHL teams, in their own rinks, on the 1976 tour. Their last stop was Philadelphia. NHL President, Clarence Campbell, who hated the Flyers and their physical style of play, allegedly visited the Flyers in their locker room before the game and basically told the Flyers to go out and do what they do best.

After a particularly vicious hit on Kharlamov, the Soviet coach pulled his team off the ice, at which point Ed Snider (the Philadelphia owner) told the Russians, no play, no pay. Oddly enough, the Soviets came back out for the rest of their butt-kicking.

I think I'll enjoy the Summit Series, also. The set I bought has all the uncut games, and a documentary on it. Got really lucky, too (I think the ESPN thing boosted the short-term demand): got it for about $70 new, and currently it's selling for $140 used.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

Yup. As for being old enough to understand this event, I am young enough where this didn't really enter my world as a sports fan (my family is not into sports like we are) until I was a teenager at best. The Russians were a pure machine. I really don't know of any other team in any sport that can compare. I'll list a few that could maybe be in the same breath:

2008-2010 UConn women's basketball (90 game winning streak)
1972 NFL Miami Dolphins (17-0)
1950's MLB NY Yankees
1960's NBA Boston Celtics
1964-75 UCLA Bruins men's basketball

And frankly, the UConn team is the only one I'd seriously compare to the USSR hockey team. That's how dominant those teams were.

I like your choices, I'd add two teams and rank them slightly differently.

1967 - 1976 UCLA men's basketball. 10 Championships in 12 years. Back then, freshmen couldn't play varsity ball. That meant roster turnover every three years. To keep re-stocking like that was really amazing.
2000 - 2004, 2009 - 2010, 2013 - 201? UConn women's basketball. Overall, 8 national titles (and counting?) in those 9 years (so far); 4 undefeated seasons.
1950's NY Yankees. Baseball was the # one sport back then, best all-around athletes gravitated to that sport. Everyone wanted to beat them, no one could.
1991 - 1993 / 1996 - 1998 Chicago Bulls. They actually won more playoff series during those two three-peats than the Celtics did in their entire 13 year run. The '96 Bulls were 72 - 10 (!!!) in the regular season and 15 - 3 in the playoffs. They also had to deal with salary / roster restrictions.
1957 - 1969 Boston Celtics. 11 Championships in 13 years.

I'd omit the 1972 Dolphins only because we are talking about a multi-year run of sustained excellence. Perhaps the 1940s / 1950s Cleveland Browns with Otto Graham? 7 championships in 10 years.

. . .
If I remember correctly, the defending NCAA Champion UCLA varsity (Goodrich et. al, I think) lost a game/scrimmage to the UCLA freshmen (Alcindor/Jabbar et. al.)
