St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyond?

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Does anyone know if the Vermont game will be televised online?

Not saying the season is over cause like I pointed we are only a few defensive end corrections away from being very good. However, the thing that I don't like is that we have looked like we were cleaning things up before and had good games only to revert to terrible. I probably worded it wrong but I meant the whole team not just the defense unit. Our forwards have been plain terrible inside our own blue line, not taking care of business in their zones of the defensive end and they play extremely scared clearing the puck (refusing to take a hit on the boards in order to get the puck out of the zone). Way too many turnovers by throwing no look passes in our own end and way too many guys letting pucks simply go to avoid contact. You want to play and win big-boy hockey you have to be willing to get a little dirty especially in your own end.

The thing that bothers me the most is that I know Carvey and Hurley are telling this guys the right way to play defense (hell you can here their instructions clearly in Appleton most nights) but the guys aren't able figure it out or just plain refuse to get it done.

Again, things could easily turn and we could have a great season. However, if we stay even close to the course we are playing defensively as a whole team this could be one of the most frustrating seasons ever.

Let's Go Saints! Crush the Cats!

Agreed. More games like the recent ones against Clarkson, Cornell and Colgate will result in complete frustration. We need more 60 minute games such as the way they played at Harvard.

One thing SLU has almost always had is good penalty killing. There are times when defensemen have to stay at home and the forwards have to be focused on position and not afraid to sacrifice. Just fixing that changes the outcome of the games this weekend.

The games were very frustrating to watch this weekend. You could see every goal against develop and it was way too easy for Clarkson. That's gotta end. If it doesn't, coaches have to come down on the players that aren't doing what their told. Plain and simple, stop trying to do to much, start playing as a unit, focus on fundamentals.

I think its more frustrating because we all see what we can be, and just aren't putting it together in some of the recent games. That's tougher than some seasons past where we just didn't have the depth or talent which we do have now.

Vermont will be a good test for us. Hope we can end the slide and focus on getting back to basics.

Found a really good article on the Carey brothers that I think everyone would enjoy reading ... It's a shame we only get the together for one full year!

Well for the sake of my $250+ per night room I already have booked, I sure hope we can make it or else I may be watching four teams with less enthusiasm than I would if my Saints were there! :p ;)
WOW! I never paid that much for the D-III finals the past 2 years (same calendar weekend). I stayed @ the Courtyard.

I was planning on going, but with the weather looking to be pretty nasty in this area, I decided to scratch it ... Cheer loud for me and Let's Go Saints!!!

I am not going but will be tuning in. Just wanted to add, that despite my negativity of late, I couldn't be prouder to be a Saints fan. And, while I won't directly mention here what sign I'm referring to (won't stoop to that level), I'll just say to Matt W., "THAT YOU UNDERSTAND IT." A father, a student, and BTW a D-1 goaltender - YOU UNDERSTAND IT. Doesn't matter if you ever make another save or not - BECAUSE, YOU UNDERSTAND IT/LIFE and WHAT REALLY MATTERS.

Safe travels to all of you going to BTV. I am hoping for a UVM win but it is always great to see SLU play.

I won't be there, but my son will. Any of you who recognize him, say hi. He'll be wearing my red SLU Hockey fleece pullover.

L’ESPERANCE, VANKO, AND HAYTON EARN WEEKLY USHL HONORS

Chicago, IL – The United States Hockey League today announced the CCM and Reebok player awards for the 12th week of the 2013-14 USHL regular season.

Winners include Joel L’Esperance of the Tri-City Storm, recognized as CCM Forward of the Week; Alec Vanko of the Chicago Steel, chosen as CCM Defenseman of the Week; and Kyle Hayton of the Sioux City Musketeers, earning honors as Reebok Goaltender of the Week.

Joel L’Esperance, F, Tri-City Storm: The 18-year-old had a monster week for the Storm, recording six points (5g, 1a) and a plus-three rating over three games. He scored his team’s lone goal in the 4-1 loss to the Waterloo Black Hawks on Friday night. He dished out an assist in Friday’s 3-2 loss to the Des Moines Buccaneers. The Michigan Tech University commit then had a career night on Saturday, exploding for four goals, including the game-winner, in the 6-3 win over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. He is the first player in Storm history to score four goals in a game, and the 20th USHL player in the Tier 1 era (2002-present) to accomplish that feat. The native of Brighton, Michigan leads the Storm with 20 points (13g, 7a) in 23 games, and his 13 goals are tied for fourth in the USHL.

Alec Vanko, D, Chicago Steel: The defenseman was a key piece in helping the Steel collect three of a possible four points in the standings during the weekend. On Friday, he doubled his season goal total by scoring a pair on the power play in the 4-3 overtime win over the Youngstown Phantoms. His second goal of the night came just 10 seconds into the overtime period. The 19-year-old then notched an assist on Saturday in the 4-3 overtime loss to the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Over the weekend, Vanko also helped the Steel kill off 14-of-15 opponent power plays. The Oregon, Wisconsin native is the team’s top scoring defenseman and currently fifth overall with 10 points (4g, 6a) in 20 games this season.

Kyle Hayton, G, Sioux City Musketeers: Committed to St. Lawrence University, the goaltender led the Musketeers to three road wins, posting a 1.33 goals-against-average and .955 save percentage. On Wednesday night, he turned aside 23 shots in a 3-1 win over the Fargo Force. Two days later, the 19-year-old came back with a 27-save performance in a 3-2 victory against the Lincoln Stars. He capped off his busy week by blocking 34 shots in Saturday’s 5-1 win over the Sioux Falls Stampede. It was the 13th win of the season for the Faribault, Minnesota native, tying him for the USHL lead and already equaling his win total from last season. Hayton ranks tied for third among League goaltenders in both GAA (2.35) and SV% (.923).
