Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Yikes.
Don't know what to say either.
First, I have to withdraw my statement from last night saying the loss to Colgate was a "bad loss." Clearly Colgate proved their mettle tonight with a big comeback win at Cheel. It was still bad in that we didn't play well but, after tonight...I'm giving Colgate more credit for making us play poorly.

As for tonight.......what a horrible start. And boy unless we can find a better penalty kill...we have to stay out of the box. (However it seems to impact even the best. I have the St. Louis Blues v. Carolina game on and the Blues just gave up two shorties on the same PP!!)

The coaches will certainly have a lot to work on in practice this week. The ECAC is a very competitive league. I'm not "shocked" we went 0 for the weekend. What I am shocked by is that we weren't competitive in either game. I'm also shocked that goal tending is starting to appear to be a weakness. That more than anything can be deadly for this team as we play up tempo offensive hockey. Hope Wenny can get some confidence back and soon. I'm betting we will see more of Parks in non conference action or a rotation in those games to see if one or the other will step up.

I realize the bulk of the team is young and inexperienced and that equals ups and downs. After watching in person 3 times and on the net numerous times, I just didn't think the bottom of how we could play was that far down.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Stink, stank, stunk ... That about sums up this weekend. We looked awful both night and it actually got even worse as the weekend progressed. I could sit here and try to come up with something positive to say, but why bother. We need to get back to basics ... In a hurry!

Yep. 4.5-5 periods of ugliness and one good period (the 2nd tonight). That is no way to treat home fans. And you know, the other thing that was ugly was the officiating tonight. Don't remember if it was Cornell's 2nd or 3rd goal tonight, but it was way offsides, but the one thing they have to call on Cornell more is picks. The amount they pick is atrocious. Final beef, on icings they are going to have to change the rule so a team like Cornell can get a delay of game call as their attempted substitutions and then dawdling going back to the bench was very obviously an attempt to gain extra rest for their gassed players. Really only two highlights from the weekend...McGovern's goal was a beaut, and Wicks hit on Mowery on the PK was bone crushing.

I don't know what to blame but I will say we were outskating, outworked and deserved to lose both games this weekend. Played better tonight, but too little too late. The first was horrible. I think moving into the top 20 is a curse for a young team like this.

Wonder what happened to Smolcynski...thanks for the clue Brandon.

Well, I'm hoping we can turn it around so we don't repeat this at RIT.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Well, this weekend sucked. Nothing more, nothing less.

Didn't watch tonight, but was following on twitter and CHN. Not sure if it is due to our desire to play a more aggressive PK, but I believe Cornell had men alone in front on 3 goals. Over-committing to the puck carrier? Blown coverages? PP has always been something Cornell feasts on.

I'm expecting to see some more of Parks and maybe McDonald going into these next 4 OOC games, especially in hostile environments (Ritter and tRalph). Oh, and then we get Clarkson immediately following that.

Gut check time for the boys. The wheels can come off real quick in these next 4-6 games if they continue the overall performance of this weekend. Hope Carvey and Co. can get the message across and the boys can get back on track next weekend.

We're still a very young team, maybe this will just be a bump in the road.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Smolcynski has a seperated shoulder.he has a sling on and is out for weeks

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Watching online (video and audio were great) SLU just looked really slow and flat. Almost as if they had practiced too hard during the week. Guys weren't finishing checks. Passing was off. They were slow on line changes. On breaks, the Carey line sometimes seemed like they were just hanging around at center ice without a mission. Pretty strange when you contrast that with the Yale game. I always wonder what causes a normally good team to show up that flat. Hagen goal was sweet.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Was at both games and there's not much I can add that hasn't already been said here. My assessment is that we aren't as good as I thought we were before seeing us play this weekend, but not nearly as bad - and we were bad - as we were this weekend; instead, we're probably somewhere in the middle. Friday night we got outworked big time and lost 90% or more of puck possession battles. Saturday was just a case of Matt having a really bad night, albeit a short one. I'm not worried about this team with one exception - Our PK is atrocious and needs to be fixed.

FWIW, the place was packed both nights and the fans were very loud/supportive...........the fact that we listed crowds both nights at about 2,000 is a joke. I know why, but doing so gives the false impression that the rink was 2/3 full when it was packed. I guess the 4.367 fans that pack Lynah for all games at Cornell include no students. SLU needs to fix this.

Nothing else to add except that having the next 6 of 7 on the road might be a good thing. Time will tell.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

The official capacity at Appleton Arena is 2300 people, so crowds in excess of 2000 people indicate a fairly full barn. Fans are counted at the doors and the attendance is an actual people figure...this time of the year there are a number of reserved seats which are sold, but empty, as the holders are in pursuit of the wily white tail.

Respectfully disagree. SLU lists capacity at 3,200. See http://www.saintsathletics.com/sports/2013/7/15/appletonarena.aspx?tab=appletonarena

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Spaceman just called and asked if I knew who "ELSID" is? I said, "no clue." He then asked if I knew what "El" means in Spanish and I said, "no clue." Once he enlightened me on my Spanish, we laughed our butts off because it was then very clear to me who "ELSID" is. Duh! Not my place to disagree with him because he'd know better than anybody else. Guess I have a frozen brain instead of unfrozen pucks.:) My best guess is that Appleton has 2,300 seats and 700 or so can stand up top by the railings. So, it seats 2,300 and holds about 3,000.

And the only time standing room is counted is when we actually sell standing room tickets (Clarkson game is pretty much the only one). I am not sure if the fire marshal would like it if we had 3000 in there....2800 might be the actual total capacity.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

I'm just guessing and going with feel here, but 2,400 seats seems about right for Appleton. Also during the most recent upgrade to Appleton, weren't about 100 or so seats removed? My years are beginning to blend together so I can't remember, which year that was.

Anyway, the discussion about attendance got me thinking as to what was or were the largest crowds at Appleton over the last 15 years or so. This is what I was able to locate:

Well, I do think it is fair to call the venerable Wally on this to some extent. I thought as a general rule that Ms. O'Brien did a panoramic view and provided that as the official attendance figure without counting? How they do it now? By the book? Same way? As far as I am concerned, there are two different size crowds - with students and without. Since Greg was mentioning this, some students due sit accross from the primary student section where chicken man sat. I miss the days where students had to sit where the could or stand. To that end, better job scheduling this year so that students are there for most home games - except January. They provide a definite lift. Hope the funk the boys played with this week is figured out and disposed of. That was painful to watch at times.

In looking through the old box scores, it did appear for many years the attendance was an estimate, but that's a guess on my part.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

I think the days of 3-4 deep on the rail need to come back ;). Pack 'em in for that team down the ol' road.

The largest crowd I ever saw at Appleton was against Clarkson with the Saints winning on a late goal by Burke Murphy on a 2 on 1 break with Paul DiFrancesco back in 1996. I was standing 3 rows deep along the rail.

I don't think my parents brought me to that game, but I remember my dad saying he thought the roof was going to cave in from the noise after that goal. Loudest he has heard Appleton.

Ahhhh....I met Elsid at the Colgate Inn a few years ago ! How are ya bud ?

They are now using a counter at each door and they bring the results up in the third period to include in the box score.
