SNC Regular Season 2009-10

Re: SNC Regular Season 2009-10

Going through the boxscore I saw a penalty for "abuse of refs" at the end of the game. I've never heard/seen this call before. What would warrant a penalty like that? I assume the player was just running his mouth?

The entire first section on the Rules of play section of the http://www.ncaapublications.com/Uploads/PDF/2008-10_MW_IceHockeyRules7ff9e6ab-7d20-441b-b768-522bfb15c487.pdf (starts on page 57) deals with Abuse of Officials:

Abuse of Officials and Other Misconduct
SECTION 1. a. A coach or non-playing person shall not challenge or dispute
the rulings of any official before or during a game.
PENALTY—Bench minor. If this action persists, with the exception of
medical personnel, a game misconduct shall be assessed.

b. A player shall not challenge or dispute the rulings of any official before
or during a game.
PENALTY—Misconduct.

e. A player, coach or non-playing person shall not interfere in any manner
with any on- or off-ice officials in the performance of their duties.
PENALTY—Player: Misconduct or game misconduct.
Coach or non-playing person: Bench minor. If a coach or
non-playing person, with the exception of medical personnel,
persist in such action, a game misconduct shall be assessed.
Medical personnel are subject to supplementary discipline
penalties.

f. A coach or other non-playing person connected with a team shall not
use foul or abusive language; obscene gestures; threatening language
or gestures; or other unsportsmanlike conduct to an official or opposing
player or otherwise try to influence or intimidate an official or opposing
player either before or during a game.
PENALTY—Bench minor. For further violation, with the exception of
medical personnel, a game misconduct shall be assessed.
Medical personnel are subject to supplementary discipline
penalties.

g. A player shall not use obscene, profane, threatening or abusive language
or gestures or other unsportsmanlike conduct before or during a game or
after a game.
PENALTY—Player to player: Minor. If this action persists, a game
misconduct shall be assessed.
Player to official: Misconduct, game misconduct, or
disqualification, at the discretion of the referee.

h. A player, coach or other non-playing person shall not direct ethnic or
racial slurs to an official, opposing player or opposing team personnel.
PENALTY—Game misconduct, with the exception of medical personnel.
Medical personnel are subject to supplementary discipline
penalties.

j. A player, except for the purpose of taking a position on the penalty
bench, shall not enter or remain in the referee’s crease while the referee
is reporting to or consulting with any game officials.
PENALTY—Misconduct.

m. A player shall not physically or deliberately make contact with an
official before, during or after the game.
PENALTY—Disqualification.

These are the ones that mention any interaction between players and officials. Interestingly, none of these mention a Major penalty (which is what was assessed, in addition to the Game Misconduct)...

Re: SNC Regular Season 2009-10

Yeah, not sure what was going on out there last night. I think Point may have come out a bit over charged and had problems controlling themselves, or something along those lines. I thought they had it under control after the last 3-4 weeks, where they were staying out of the box quite well. Some of the early calls were a little marginal for a playoff game, but none-the-less, Point cannot let it snowball on them the way they did. It certainly was not a good showing.

As far as Bockman getting a 5-fighting, DQ, I didn't think that was appropriate, he just went over and more or less layed on Pulak after he stumbled through Graves(which he was given a 5-tripping for). It was late enough that a general 5-roughing would have taken care of it. A Norberts fan spit at Bockman as he walked down the tunnel, which Bockmans father proceeded to berate for about 5 minutes after.

I thought the crowd atmosphere was great as well. The two student sections, despite being about 30 feet apart from each-other were quite civil in their exchanges(or at least as much as could have been expected), which was nice.

As TBB mentioned, despite allowing 7, Graves did play well, and it would have been at least 3-0 after the first if he wouldn't have been on.

Point plays a hard hitting game, which is fine, but they need to understand that the refs will call it when you unnecessarily rough the player in the process. They also need to figure out how to control their emotions... It was only 1-0 after one. They should have reset.

Wormser:

I appreciate your insight on the game. I did not see or hear of the spitting incident but think that we can both agree that spitting on a player by a fan is idiotic.

We also agree that the student sections and the banter was done well and the atmosphere was electric. Kudos to both student sections for raising their spirits and leaving the brawls on the ice.

Finally, I agree that Point can play a physical game. If played clean, they can be effective. Their problem was that they came out looking like a goon squad. I believe that it starts from the coach on down as Nichol needs to take control because as you mentioned, they were only down by 1 after the 1st period.

As I said last night, if Point ever wants to get to the top of the NCHA or to the NCAA's again; they might want to start recruiting fast players with talent because speed kills in the NCHA and is certainly a must when playing the Eastern teams.

By the way, Coach C. and the SNC team should be proud of the way that they held their composure by staying away from the BS distributed by the Point team.

How SNC promotes itself isn't the Gamblers fault. No, there's no replay board at the Stone, but nothing else the Gamblers do in terms of contests, promotions or giveaways aren't anything SNC couldn't do if it wanted. If SNC wants to draw casual families and families looking for entertainment, then it could it do so.

Re: SNC Regular Season 2009-10

The student sections will always be that close. There are certain individuals that want absolute control of who is directly behind the goals. Besides tradition, this is why Section A is dedicated to SNC students. This is also why the majority of comps issued fall into Section L. This ensures that a high majority of SNC fans are directly behind the net. Combine this with good coverage from season ticket holders, the Box Office has no choice but to sell visiting teams tickets in Section C, D and half of Section B (seats 11-20) during playoffs. The NCHA and NCAA minimally require that the greater of 250 seats or 10% of the house be held and sold to visiting teams. Hence, in trying to please everyone, the two student sections will be that close. Fortunately, we have a bit of a buffer as seats 1-10 in Section B are mostly sold to older SNC fans, who usually have a bit more emotional control. There are those who do worry about the closeness, and I do admit that I do too, but last night was a great example of why having them that close is dangerously fun and electrifying.

Re: SNC Regular Season 2009-10

Yeah, the older more mature fans of section B were a real class act screaming at the Point coachs between periods, and spitting at a Point player. Maybr they should put the students over there seeing it looked like they had more brains.

There's no excuse for fans spitting, but you reap what you sow. They way Point conducted themselves would you think the home fans wouldn't let loose on how they felt about it? I'm sure if Point guys dish out multiple unsportsmanlike penalties, bow-tie crosschecks and abusing officials no one should really say anything about it. Most of the section B fans appreciate the game of hockey, not watching a once-proud program hit what has to be an all-time low, even lower than the last couple of years under Baldaroatta, with their conduct on Saturday night.

Beer. It keeps the casual fan going to the Resch Center and away from the CCC.

SNC is hockey! Gamblers is a show filled with T shirt tosses, kissing cams and free pizza giveaways. I hope that SNC continues to offer what it is, a great night of pure hockey at a reasonable price.:)

There is never an excuse to spit at a player. However, if the SNC fans in Section B and every other section weren't berating Nichol and his coaching staff with everything they had then they should have been thrown out for not knowing the game. The Point staff deserved everything the crowd could muster up.

Re: SNC Regular Season 2009-10

Wormser, I agree the 5 minutes for fighting was unwarranted. Pulak isn't the kind of guy who goes after a goalie, but once he did get tied up with him I thought the Point player did exactly what he should have and a minor would have been appropriate.

From my vantage point it was obvious the Point guy was throwing punches at Pulak, which I think is an automatic DQ.

Image how the home crowd at the Willett would have behaved if the roles were reversed and SNC assumed the 'Goon' role:eek:

I know they always wanted to string up Rampone and I can't really blame them. I can't imagine what they would have done if SNC would bring in about 6 or 7 Rampone's, which is essentially what Point did last night.

Or maybe, 7 Rob Mays;) ;)

uw-sp a classless goon squad? nooooooo you must have the wrong program. :D

You should start the Stout offseason thread. Or I guess you could register more aliases since the rest of yours are so obvious it should be humiliating

Loved the crowd at the game Sat evening; find it hard to understand how someone in Section B could spit far enough to hit a player, though do find that offensive if it really happened. And I do believe that is where the Rowdy Crowd was sitting......hmmmmmmm.. It was disappointing to see Point play in the manner they did; would have been much more impressive to watch a solid three periods of play. Looking forward to the championship against River Falls next week - bring it on! And hats off to SNC players for keeping their cool.;)

Re: SNC Regular Season 2009-10

Rob May simply gave F-Gore what he asked for on one night and became famous in Stevens Point.

Ramponie, well, he was a little more guilty once in a while, but he often got a bad rap because he was really good at hip checking. It was great to watch unless it was one of your guys getting checked.
