The De Pere Ice Center isn't much of a facility, but it sure got loud when the place was packed, which was almost every game. Had to turn people away for the playoff games.
Some great memories, from my early D3 hockey days.

Since I made the original rant regarding crowd participation, I feel that I should respond. I want to make it perfectly clear that I was frustrated with the entire crowd, a crowd that is typically 98% adults, 2% students. I am hopeful that the Peter's Cup playoffs and hopefully NCAA tourney will bring out fans that want to be involved in the game vs. attendees that are there to trade cooking secrets or discuss the latest on Oprah!

I agree with your posts that the students and oldsters can both improve as it seems that the fan base has become too comfy with winning and lack any enthusiasm. I have never mentioned Tim in my rant and do not blame him for this. If others feel differently on this subject, that is their opinion.

I have a surefire way of making sure that the crowd is into the game and actually watching the puck! Take away the nets above the side boards as it was during the original years at the CCC. This would allow for chuck a puck, a fan favorite and certainly would be a better view of the game. If you do not think that this works, attend a Pointer game and watch the crowd. Point's fans have learned to watch the game and the puck or else you will be wearing the puck on your way to local hospital for stitches. I will not hold my breath on this happening due to obvious reasons.:D

Interesting discussion. I know its comparing apples to oranges (or maybe kumquats), but these same discussions are going on about Plattsburgh's playoff attendance by students, and the complaints are somewhat the same.

Norwich doesn't have that problem because of the fact that Kreitzberg is right on campus, and when students are on campus "Cadet Corner" seems to fill up really well. So, I'm sure I'm speaking out of ignorance here (never stopped me before), but I wonder if part of the issue in both places is a change in student culture in which there has been a shift away from supporting athletic programs to doing more individualized activities (like solo drinking or something)

I have been to the Kreitzberg for the Final 4. What a wonderful facility with the exception of a few minor inconveniences that I have been told have been corrected since!!:D I really cannot comment on the student culture at SNC or if the students will start attending as the playoffs progress. I can say that in the past, SNC students have been ok for the season with improvements as the playoffs progress. We will see if this stays true this year.

As far as Northfield and the facility on campus, that is clearly a nice perk. However, I am sure that you will admit that Norwich hockey is the "main draw" for the area. No offense when I say this but Green Bay has a few more things going on during the weekends and that SNC hockey is not the main draw for most in the area. Again, no offense as I am a bit envious of the fan base and following of Norwich hockey.

By the way, you would not happen to be the retired leader of the Norwich band, would you?

I for one have displayed horrible behavior at the CCC and never been kicked out! :cool:

You are lucky. I was going to send you the bill for my hearing aids. Something that I had to insert after having the tuba player behind me in the SNC section of the Final 4, Frozen 4, Burlington Invitational, or whatever they want to call it.;)

Someone in Section B was drilled at a Point game earlier this year. I want to say the Friday Eau Claire game, but I'm not sure. Could be wrong, but I've heard Point is laying off the netting all the way around and installing higher glass on that side. Probably not a bad idea considering my head and upper torso are over the glass just when walking down the aisle between the bleachers and glass.

Want to know NCHA death trap #1? Shooting pictures on the stairs at the CCC. Best be paying attention when you venture there. Right in the wheelhouse of a player coming from behind the net and trying to play it off the glass and out of the zone.

Good idea on the high glass at Point. I have witnessed a few shots to the crowd with the low glass on the side boards. I hate to admit that I like anything about Soup but I really like Wessman's high glass w/o seams that were put in for the Final 4 a few years back. I know that cost is a major player, but that the high glass at Wessman or U of Michigan should be way to go. The netting is safe but also a tough view. By the way, sounds like you have first hand knowledge of the stairs at the CCC. Bellin, St Mary's or St. Vincent's hospital?:eek:

Never have been hit while standing there, but I sure as heck am paying attention. Last year, in the NCHA quarters, I was up in the CCC box and a puck knocked my glasses off without actually hitting me. Little too close for comfort on that one. I'd have seen it coming if there weren't 900 banners obstructing the view of that far corner...

I don't really like the netting either, but I have watched a lot of games at both the old De Pere Ice and Rec Center and the Cornerstone and I have seen several serious fan injuries. I've been to almost all of the games since the net went up and there have been no injuries.

The Knight's attendance also suffers from lack of local hockey turnout because they almost always go head to head with the Gamblers. This has happened with monotonous regularity since the day Tim Coghlin arrived in De Pere. The Gamblers are promoted like a professional team, they have beer and fights. Tough to compete with to build a local fan base.

Just back from the game and a few comments.

1. SNC played inspired hockey highlighted by another strong outing in goal by O'Brien. He certainly has stepped up this year!

2. The fans were great tonight!!! The student section was full and roudy, but respectful. They certainly have put on their tourney spirit. Additionally, every section of the Oldsters was outstanding tonight. Completely loud and into the game. Wonderful to see!!!

3. The Bad-I have tried to give Point the benefit of the doubt over the years but tonights effort was disgraceful. The Point team did nothing but "goon it up" out there. Will Nichol was hired to hopefully get Point back at the top of the NCHA and NCAA's. He really needs to refocus on his recruiting efforts as it looks like his team is made up of slow, big goons that will never get Point over the position of a mid level NCHA team. Tonights game was an embarassment for Point and Nichol seems to have lost control of his team. I hope that Nichol is not becoming the second coming of Dan Stauber.

I was very happy with the big crowd tonight and they were into it. The students deserved admonishment when we gave it but they deserve credit for being very into it tonight. I anticipate it will be even better the next two Saturdays. I thought the Point fans, despite the result, represented as well. Made for a very fun atmosphere.

The PP wasn't great early, but overall I thought the Knights played inspired and did a good job of protecting themselves without losing composure.

I know it sounds strange to say on a night he gave up 7 goals, but I thought Graves was decent most of the night. I think they may have something in this kid.

I fully expected Point to play physical because there was no way they could turn it into a skill game up and down the ice with SNC. This line of thought was smart and necessary. However, they went way overboard. Nichol should be embarassed by the lack of discipline and composure his team showed tonight. He was Stauber-esque in his constant whining to the officials. When your team has their elbows up launching themselves at the head for every check along the boards and saves their best hits for after the whistle you lose all ability to cry about penalties. His thought that the officials had it out for his team was ridiculous at best, although I will say I thought SNC's 4th goal was played with a high stick and should have been waived off.

It may have cost them the shutout (nice celebration on a goal to reduce the deficit to 6 by the way), but it was a great move by Coghlin to get O'Brien out of there. I wouldn't have been the least bit stunned to see one of the Pointers run him in those last few minutes.

I share the same thoughts, as TBB & MW, about last nite's SNC victory @ 'The Stone". The crowd, both the students and the 'white hairs', was into it for the entire game.
The Pointers 'or Goon Squad' came to play their game against the more talented Knights. This style of play will do nothing to advance their standing in D-3 hockey.
The days of the big, lumbering forwards and blueliners, that try to intimidate, after the whistle, are ancient history in the NCHA. All of the other teams, in the league, have filled their rosters with more athletic, better skating players. All except, the "Goon Pointers'.
27 penalties in a playoff game is embarassing. :eek: :eek: :eek:

Yeah, not sure what was going on out there last night. I think Point may have come out a bit over charged and had problems controlling themselves, or something along those lines. I thought they had it under control after the last 3-4 weeks, where they were staying out of the box quite well. Some of the early calls were a little marginal for a playoff game, but none-the-less, Point cannot let it snowball on them the way they did. It certainly was not a good showing.

As far as Bockman getting a 5-fighting, DQ, I didn't think that was appropriate, he just went over and more or less layed on Pulak after he stumbled through Graves(which he was given a 5-tripping for). It was late enough that a general 5-roughing would have taken care of it. A Norberts fan spit at Bockman as he walked down the tunnel, which Bockmans father proceeded to berate for about 5 minutes after.

I thought the crowd atmosphere was great as well. The two student sections, despite being about 30 feet apart from each-other were quite civil in their exchanges(or at least as much as could have been expected), which was nice.

As TBB mentioned, despite allowing 7, Graves did play well, and it would have been at least 3-0 after the first if he wouldn't have been on.

Point plays a hard hitting game, which is fine, but they need to understand that the refs will call it when you unnecessarily rough the player in the process. They also need to figure out how to control their emotions... It was only 1-0 after one. They should have reset.

Going through the boxscore I saw a penalty for "abuse of refs" at the end of the game. I've never heard/seen this call before. What would warrant a penalty like that? I assume the player was just running his mouth?

I didn't see the particulars, that resulted in this call. There was plenty going on behind the play, for this entire game.
