SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Is ECAC officiating this bad all the time? All games at Appleton have been brutal. One of the linesman (tall thin guy) on Friday night could barely skate. Saints looked good last weekend, much more disciplined! Very encouraged that 4 of the 5 losses against very good competition-top Ten ranked teams - #4, #8 and #9. Need to get more scoring from all lines and the power play and SLU could surprise some people.

Welcome to the ECAC officiating. We promise nothing other than inconsistency, at best.

It isn't common, by any means, to see a WELL officiated game. That said, I have seen games that I walked away from thinking that it was a good job, not great. I'm a little bit more lenient than most, since I officiated hockey and understand just how hard it can be at times to see everything, we're spoiled up in the seats.

I believe the Rapture occurred at 00:49 of the third period in Princeton, NJ.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Nice win by the Saints. Sounds like it got a little tense in the third but we hung on. I took in the Clarkson v. Quinnipiac game tonight to check both teams out prior to going to tomorrow nights game. Karpowich played out of his mind tonight and put up one of the better goal tending performances I have seen in awhile. I was not impressed with Clarkson at all. I'm not sure if I caught them on a bad night, but they got outshot 44-11 and looked very out of sync. Bad passing and very, very chippy play. Tambelyn especially was hitting a lot after the whistle and in one sequence really mugged a Q player who was down on the ice along the boards. He only got two minutes but I thought he deserved a lot more. As usual the officiating was very questionable. They swallowed their whistles quite a bit towards the end and then inexplicably called a minor on Clarkson with 2:01 to go after letting much worse go.

Q Pac has some very talented players and appears to be pretty deep. I think we will have our hands full tomorrow night. The Jones brothers are very talented passers (and also very chippy) and the new freshman Peca is pretty impressive as well. If we play like we have the last three we should be in it and have a chance. I just hope all those goals Quinny didn't score tonight against Karpowich don't go in tomorrow afternoon.

Anyone else going to the game tomorrow afternoon?

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Last night was a nice win for the guys for sure. We needed that one, but I have a feeling this afternoons game will be much more difficult. Quinnipiac really took it to Clarkson and as critsports mentioned they outshot Clarkson 44-11. Karpowich was a beast last night! Clarkson was missing there two best offensive players in Oakley and Sexton so that could have something to do with it. Let's hope we continue the good efforts we have put forth in the previous three games. A win tonight would make for a great start to the league season. Here's hoping!

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

1-0 OT win in Hamden, gonna make for a much, much better trip back home for the boys for sure. Excellent road sweep, and Weninger is clearly on his game lately, and it appears the defensive systems are starting to take hold. Gotta think Wenny will be in the running for GOTW, with the shutout and 2 wins.

T-1st after the 2nd weekend. This is me laughing at everybody who wrote SLU off for an 0-___ season after our "preseason" games.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Had my first chance to see the Saints in person this afternoon and what a pleasant surprise.
I knew this would be a tough game and it was. Quinny gave us all we could handle but the boys played well, stood tall, had a lot of composure and blocked a ton of shots. I was really pleased to see the effort from the start to finish.
It was nice to see all the freshman play for the first time and we have a nice crop of newcomers. Again we are deep and I would imagine there is pressure to crack the lineup as some good players are not dressing.

Flanny's game winner in OT was all him. He had a shot, the rebound came to him, he went around the net and stuffed it just before Hartzell got back. They reviewed the goal which made for some anxious moments!!!!

What a great weekend.....four points on the road when I thought 1-2 points would have been a decent result. Way to go boys!!!

Let's Go Saints!!!

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Congrats to the coaches and players on the weekend sweep! Sounds like the team is on the right track. Looking forward to watching them over in Lake Placid in a few weeks.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

It was a great weekend indeed. Who would've thought after the 0-5 start that we would be 3-1 in league play and be tied for first with Cornell and Yale. Hopefully we can keep this up as we head home for a 4 game stretch. You're doing a great job guys, but don't let up. Let's Go Saints!!!

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Speaking of coaches, I've heard some wonderful feedback about Greg Carvel from some knowledgeable sources. From what I have heard, he has not only instituted new offensive and defensive systems, but has also demonstrated an excellent overall ability to coach the team. I think most of us, given his background, expected nothing less, but it's always nice to have one's expectations met or exceeded!

Carvel is the real deal. Great hockey mind and a great guy. No nonsense and no drama. The players are buying into everything he is coaching. ECAC is going to be a dogfight and SLU will be in the thick of it.

In short, yes! It is the ONLY thing I hate about college hockey and the ECAC in particular. The officiating in the ECAC is poor and often biased. Many nights it is plain incompetent. The other part of that scene that is upsetting is that when we go on the road for Non-Conference games, we have to overcome some bigtime homers in the stripes, but when we get the odd NC game at Appleton, the zeebs always seem to favor the visiting team. It seems in the ECAC, familiarity breeds contempt. There have been so many people that make their living in hockey from scouts, GM's to media that have been left speechless by the night to night inconsistencies and, at times, incompetence. Sadly, I think it actually is better now than 5 years ago, but far from as good and consistent as it was 20-25 years ago. I have long advocated trying to hire refs from the OHL. They are way more competent in my opinion than these lawyers, firemen, cops and whatever else that officiate games on the weekends. The only thing I can applaud is the worst ref ever (Frank Murphy) does not work ECAC games anymore and has been banished to working as a linesman in the AHL.

Brandon, the reason I can't be forgiving is that time after time I see refs looking right at an infraction and they call it different between the 1st and 3rd or week to week. When I recall injuries such as Casey Parenteau in the Albany Tourney in 2007 and the ref seeing the hit and skating over Parenteau lying motionless on the ice it turns into utter disgust.

It has always been a weakness of the ECAC. I remember in 1989 when we got beat by Wisconsin and all I could do was marvel at Curtis Joseph and the consistency and quality of the officiating from the CCHA ref.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Absolutely unable to cheer against my pal BP this weekend....

I have never wished for a tie game yet and no time to start doing it now so go Saints!!

Yeah, I have the same issue but I will still always cheer for the Saints and Princeton the other 27-odd nights a year. I still have the same problem with Don Vaughan at Colgate, but as much as I like Donny and cheer for him personally, Colgate still can't lose enough in my book. When Mark Morris was at Clarkson it was a bit different only because he was not a former Saint player. I will say I was almost as happy about Princeton's win on Saturday as ours!

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

The Friends of St. Lawrence is conducting a silent auction for a 'Coaches vs. Cancer' game worn Sabrina Harbeck jersey. This jersey was donated by one of our board members and all proceeds will go to benefit the men's and women's hockey teams. The current bid is $75. The auction results will be announced during the Saturday Michigan Tech game. Please email me with your bid and/or questions.
Thanks
Bob

Headed to Appleton Arena for the game vs. Dartmouth shortly. Hopefully we can keep up the momentum built from the past two weekends and come away with a win tonight. Let's Go Saints!
