Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Something I didn't even realize until I just watched Dan's postgame interview with Miker:

He opened his Appleton Career with a GWG. He closed it out with the same. Nothing short of awesome there.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

No kidding, Tim. There is enough finish on those bleachers to withstand another 50 years of wear and still have life left in them. I wouldn't be surprised if the finish exceeds half an inch from the actual wood base.
It was at 0.25" when Brian and I were in the North Country attending our respective schools of higher learning.

Pay no attention to Bonesaw. He is befuddled (well, so are a lot of us) on how fast the mighty have fallen. He's ticked that we lost a playoff series to you. Well yeah - but if we hadn't played circle the wagons in the 3rd period last night, the shoe may be on the other foot. Such are the misfortunes of a 12th place team with talent that was not a talented team.

As to GTPOH complaint on letting all 12 in. I hear ya, but $$$$ win, not common sense.

Good luck in the land of Toothpaste. If I recall correctly, your Sunday night playoff record @ Starr is not spectacular. Don't let it get that far.

Thanks Joe.

Don't take this the wrong way - I want SLU to keep on winning - but I intend to enjoy everything that last night's win meant, no matter what happens in Hamilton. Knowing that it was the last home game for these seniors, what a great way to cap off some wonderful careers in Canton. Especially for some guys whose abilities and determination were underestimated by a lot of people four years ago. That's a memory to last a lifetime. And it just wouldn't be the same against any other team.

This was also the kind of series that'll make for some VERY intense and exciting games in St. Lawrence County next season.

As for next weekend, we've got some demons to exorcise down there, for sure. A trip to Albany sure would be a nice reward for breaking through at Starr. It's certainly a winnable series for both teams.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

And just you remember a couple of deliciously ironic things there Bonesaw...

1 - Your head coach stated in 2005 that Mike McKenzie would never survive at the NCAA Division 1 level. Woops...

2 - Matt Beca turned down SLU for an affiliation with a "lump" like you and an early start to the 2010 golf season. Woops...

You are in tune with the happenings in Toronto but my version of the facts on #2 was that we took someone else instead of Beca.

Roll was right, Mike McKenzie didn't survive at the NCAA D-1 level, he thrived. We have missed on some players too, but that is right up there with Red Berenson at Michigan saying Joe Day couldn't play D-1 hockey. Solid grasp of the obvious there after about 200 games in the show for Mr. Day! There is missing, and then there is "are ****ing kidding me??" Mike has had more big time goals or plays than probably any other forward for us over the last 5 years. I specifically remember games at UNH, his first game against RIT, at Colgate this year, and I'll remember this weekend forever.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I, for one, do not think last night had anything to do with Clarkson sitting on a lead. They barely touched the puck. They were getting beat in literally ever battle in the 3rd. I don't think that had as much to do with what Clarkson was doing as it did with what SLU was doing and the sheer determination and brute force that we played with in the 3rd. They were attacking but every time they got it out of their own zone they were too busy getting a line change to pursue offense. I don't think Clarkson's strategy was to sit on a one goal lead. I believe SLU's play made it look that way and didn't give them a choice. Plus, SLU drew about three penalties in the third as Clarkson had little choice but to break the rules to try to stop grade A scoring chances.

The third last night for me was all about SLU demonstrating they were, in fact, the better team and demonstrating that convicingly with a very determined sense of purpose.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

In what should be no surprise to any of us, Travis Vermeulen has been nominated for the ECAC Defensive Forward award. Congratulations on the nomination are in order, as he has certainly done more than enough to solidify his spot in the nomination pool.

He is up against Scali of Cornell, and Volpatti of Brown.

Well who wins is anyone's guess but I think I know who we are all pulling for. Reading the little write ups tells some of the story but to me the clincher are the plus/minus stats.

-Scali was near the bottom of the entire Cornell team at a -1
-Volpatti was third on his team but only a +2 He was also in the penalty box for a whopping 95 minutes, so how you can be helping your team by being a best defensive forward when you aren't even on the ice for almost 100 minutes while your team is having to kill off a penalty you committed?
-Travis led them all at a +11 arguably helped by his leading the team in scoring with 40 points. Travis also had two shorties as did Volpatti while Scali had none.

I'm biased but to me Verms should win hands down.

Speaking of which, Greg and Wally relayed an interesting little stat on Sunday night. Guess how many SHGs St. Lawrence has given up this season. I don't want to jinx them, but it's fewer than one.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Looking forward to having the Saints visit Starr this weekend. Always fun facing off against you guys. Your fans are some of the best. Hope for a good bunch of exciting games - lots of talent on display for both teams.

May the team in red uniforms win...;)

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Nice weekend by the Skating Saints to knock off those punk Techies from Potsdam. I still can’t believe that the ECAC went soft and allows every team and the mother to make the playoffs! How you can reward a team that went 9-24-4 and 4-15-3 (with 8 draft picks) by letting them into the playoffs is a crime. Top 8 should make it in and the rest can go play golf. Just another brilliant idea for our feel good society where we have to reward everyone. This is what contributes to the softening of America. Anyway, nice job Saints and lets go clean house in Hamilton.

Go Saints Go

I actually agree with this despite Harvard's upset of Princeton.

See you in Alnbany after we take out Cornell...

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Ohhhhh Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

According to Shablak on the Colgate thread, Kotyra was assigned to this series. Joe should send in the tapes from 2005 or whenever that series is and demand a replacement!

Until I see a source, I'm just assuming he's saying it, and has no backing for it. I hope my assumption is correct.

Also, again it should be no surprise, but Derek Keller has been named a final three nominee for the Defensive Player Award by the ECAC. He is up against Krueger from Cornell and Schreiber from Union.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Finally, I got permission at work to stay late (unpaid of course) and use the internet. My home PC remains on the fritz. Just took me about an hour to get caught up on this Thread alone! Casstle of the Saints will take hours!

To start, wanted to say to JoeCCT and to VicB that I went to visit my son in Cherry Hill, NJ several weeks ago and we ventured down to see a good friend of his in Colora, MD. I couldn't believe how beautiful and rural that area of MD is and how much snow was on the ground. You guys got pounded this winter.

Was great to see everybody on Sat. and Sun. A special thanks to all for your incredible hospitality and help. Wouldn't trade you guys for anybody.

As for the hockey, I could ramble on forever but won't. Suffice it to say that when Macker hit the twine with 1:23 left on Sunday that I felt like 41 years of CCT frustration (for the most part) for me might finally be over. Kudos to both teams for busting their tails in a series that will be talked about for a long time. No comment on the officiationg - that's been well/accurately covered by others

Will be commuting it to the Colgate games. Called the "Gate today and tickets are being sold for games 1 and 2 for $20.00 combined. Anybody coming from VT (Tim, Tayt?) is welcome to stay at my place and cut your one-way trip in half. Just call me at 518 762-4413, because I won't be able to view my e-mails until my home PC is fixed or replaced. FWIW, I was told that the "Gate students are on break this weekend.

Will conclude by saying that this year's team is in no way the most talented group that I've seen over the years, but it has the biggest heart. I'm going to selfishly "hate" to lose these seniors, a group that epitomizes what SLU Hockey is all about.

As for Bonesaw's comments about our bleachers, he's welcome to come musky fishing with me for 8-10 hours in my 39-year old 14' Starcraft with the original wooden seats still in it. Now, that's splinters.:D

GO SAINTS!

Just having some fun with you guys about Kotyra....I knew some of you would read it. No Kotyra that I know of ! Gotcha !!!:D

If you read his resume on the ECAC site, you'd think he was the cream of the crop. In fact, reading the resumes of ALL the ECAC refs, I am bound to ask: how could we ever replace these guys with better ones? Offer every Finnish league ref an all-expenses paid working vacation in a warmer winter climate?
Seriously--what's the point of complaining about the refs when there is literally NO chance that they'll ever be replaced? The coaches & players have to deal with reality, and so do we fans.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Looking for a good weekend out of the Saints. Colgate is tough, but I don't think we could have asked for a better draw. We recorded our only shutout of the season against them. Tisi played two good games and as I remember, had some nice saves. We only outshot them by 4 in the two games, but outscored them 7-2. If we have a solid weekend out of our goaltending and the likes of Travis, McKenzie, and Bogosian we should do well.

Go Saints Go
