Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Another classic Clarkson - SLU game. Congrats to the Saints. Hope you take out Colgate in the next round.

Now that it's over, it was impressive for SLU to beat Clarkson on the night when they played the best. The first two nights, I thought SLU was clearly better. Tonight, I felt like Clarkson was every bit as strong as SLU . . . right up until the moment when the got the lead. If they'd kept pressing, I can't help but wonder if SLU would have been able to come back.

In any case, let's hope this is the last year that either NC team finishes in 12th place for a good long time.

.

My thoughts exactly Tim. Clarkson went into a defensive shell as soon as the 3rd period started and was content to let SLU have the puck in their offensive zone and ice the puck ad nausium. On the Clarkson chat room we all could not believe they made no effort at all to try any semblence of an attack. Proved fatal. Both SLU goals were nice setups and Karpowich had no chance on either.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Phew. The Hockey Gods finally changed the bad karma around, just in the nick of time.

What to say---

Very even for the first 40, and really only 1 bad call that I could see on B2 in that period (no-call on Clarkson with Keller's stick...). That 1 blown call, however, gave Clarkson the lead after 2, however I think we're very lucky that they decided to sit on a 2-1 lead for a full 20 minutes.

SLU dominated the first 18:30 of the 3rd, outshooting Clarkson 18-2, before Clarkson was forced to try to keep their season alive. My dad (who was at the game) said he didn't think Curran should have been called for the hook, if only because it had no factor in any scoring chances, and was marginal at best. In the last minute, the only penalties called should be penalties taking away a scoring opportunity, or so blatantly obvious that you have to call it, just my opinion.

How fitting that Miker gets the game-winner in his very last game at Appleton. I'm glad Bob was able to see him shine in his last moments at home. As was said in the score-update thread, he definitely deserves the purple heart, medal of honor, whatever you want to call it for his play this weekend, especially showing as much discipline as he did. Also great to see Carden get rewarded for he, and his line, playing an excellent series.

Gotta think Tisi will get the nod next weekend, although who knows.

Right on.

Carden and his line were excellent this weekend.

Mike McKenzie has been a very good player and good representative of SLU for four years. We're lucky to have had him. What a way for him to skate off the ice at Appleton for the last time. Really fitting. Especially with the way he had to fight for every inch of ice all weekend - all the while keeping his head and really putting the offense on his back, especially at big moments (including the third goal on Saturday). And how great is it for the first assist on the GWG to go to Vermuelen?

Nice end to the home season, and as much as we hate to see them go, a great ending for the home careers for a bunch of guys. Talk about going out in style.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Tonight is a whole new series. And if SLU(t) doesn't want to be embarassed, they better win. Clarkson has nothing to be ashamed of if they lose. Come on, 12th place, we suck. But if SLU loses, it's a whole new story. Let's Go Techers. BTW, if anyone's going to the game tonight, get standing room. Those benches, or wooden planks, or whatever you wanna call them at Crappleton Arena give you splinters on your ***.

Seriously???

Tim responded for all of us!!

If this is what you really think than you are clueless. That Clarkson team was probably the best 12th place team we will ever see in the ECAC. There are some very good players and if not for injuries and suspensions I doubt they would have finished where they did.

The vast majority of fans across the league prefer Appleton to Cheel and with good reason. If you don't like Appleton, don't come, really, we won't miss you. In fact, my lasting impression of this weekend is some really classless and obnoxious fans from Clarkson that appeared to be students. Some were just having fun...some were downright obnoxious!

Now on to my thoughts on game 3...First, the worst call is the one that gave Clarkson a 2-1 lead. That call on Caister was awful. Yes, it was technically a penalty, BUT, stuff 10 times worse was let go all weekend. That is the essence of the issue with ECAC officiating is lack of consistency. All weekend Murphy has his whistle stuck up his ***, then he calls that where Caister tried to get his hands and stick free and his glove just brushed the Clarkson players mask. The first period I thought SLU showed some nerves. They ended up with the lead but it was a very even period. The second period we were outshot slightly, but that was really the result of penalty calls against SLU including giving them a 5-3. When it was 5 on 5, SLU had the edge. I would say it was a little different than what you saw Tim. In the third, it was ALL SLU. Clarkson players were just watching a blur of SLU players swarm around them. In fact, they looked gassed. SLU completely dominated that period and though they also got a couple of calls that was more how the officiating should have gone. The better team, that is chasing the puck in the offensive zone is almost by rule going to draw some penalties, but not with these clueless ECAC refs. Clarkson was utterly shell-shocked in the 3rd. It felt a lot like the 3rd on Friday night and to some extent the 2nd on Saturday. Five on five, SLU forwards had the better of the play and were able to have a sustained forecheck pretty much all weekend. SLU's struggle was putting the puck in the net. Karpowich really kept Clarkson in it all three games. What stressed me out is how many of our shots missed the net. Granted Clarkson packed it in and their d-men blocked a lot of shots but still we had some glorious chances that never materialized because we missed the net on our shots.

I think Clarkson deserves a lot of credit. They played hard, and on Sunday I thought they showed class. The change of fortunes for them was not unlike what happened to us against Yale last year in Albany (albeit over 7 minutes instead of 1). It hurts to lose that way. Clarkson has nothing to be ashamed of after that effort and Roll brought a talented and underrated team into Appleton this weekend. As I said before, I think we had the toughest series of the weekend.

What can you say about these Seniors? McKenzie is playing out of his mind as is Curran. Really liked the energy Cunningham brought to Bogo's line on the wing. The Armstrong line was great all weekend. Down a man in the last 30 seconds, Keller made several fantastic plays and really showed great leadership and determination along with Verm. So great to see Tisi win....what is there not to love about that kid??? I'll tell you what, the determination McKenzie showed with the game on the line is really something special....talk about heart!!!! Great shot by Carden as well. I really hope the adversity these guys faced this weekend helps them. I don't see how it can't.

Finally, saw recruit Riley Austin on Saturday night....whoa, big, strong, solid kid.

And, I ask again, *** happened in Troy???

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

All I can say is great job Saints and way to hang in there. Clarkson was a 12 seed but just recently started to pick it up and was getting healthy and Clarkson is Clarkson so it's always a battle. Nice job. Now onto 'Gate. Starr rink is not very friendly to the Saints as we know but they have won there this year. However, the playoffs is when it counts. I like that the team is back and healthy. Having Flanny and Child back is huge and it showed this weekend. If the boys play to the potential and skill they have every game they are going to take this series. They were a far cry from even having a shot at the beginning of the year according to the media and the other coaches. Well guess who was wrong. These guys don't quit and play hard Joe Marsh style hockey we all love.

I hope for a favorable outcome as I know where I would love to spend next weekend with a bunch of my other fellow Saints fans. I'm trying not to get too excited but it is so close and this senior class has done so much. These are the kids who I got to see in the NCAA tourney their freshman year. One game at a time and let's see what happens. I'm very excited for this weekend and GO SAINTS!!! Great series win. It was hard fought and you earned it. Now go to Starr and take care of business this weekend.

It was definitely all SLU, and the box score reflects it. But it just seemed to me that Clarkson went from very aggressive - they played like they had everything to gain and nothing to lose - to completely passive as soon as they took the lead. They didn't even try to do anything but ice the puck for several minutes. I can't believe they were suddenly exhausted. I think they decided to play it safe, and the longer they did it the bigger the SLU snowball got. Eventually it looked like Friday's game, with SLU pretty much living in Karpowich's end.

The better team, that is chasing the puck in the offensive zone is almost by rule going to draw some penalties, but not with these clueless ECAC refs.

This was the story of the weekend in terms of the officials. I'm all for calling CTH penalties, but it drove me insane that they let sooooo many blatant obstruction penalties go - most (not all) of which were happening in the Clarkson end just because SLU had so much possession time - and then they'd take an SLU player for elbowing on what were borderline calls at best.

Finally, saw recruit Riley Austin on Saturday night....whoa, big, strong, solid kid.

Dark hair, blue shirt, by any chance?

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Finally have calmed down enough and have some time enough to post.

First both teams are to be congratulated for a hard fought series. The outcome easily could have gone either way. I agree with most of what everyone else said especially the fact that Clarkson is probably the best 12th place team in the country. Their misfortunes and injuries are the only reason they wound up there and as someone else pointed out they really played much better hockey down the stretch.

On balance, I still feel we were the better, more talented team and I think it would have been a shame for us had the outcome been different (which it easily could have been with Clarkson having a lead that late into the third period).

Hands down the MVP of the series was Karpowich. Without him.....Clarkson's cause would have been lost. Friday would have been a blow out.....we would have probably won Saturday and last night (IMO) it really was up for grabs.

As to the "Crappleton" comment Tim eloquently took care of that hack with a brevity I admire and long for. I'll summarize it by saying I find charm, character and delight in almost all the rinks I visit. It's what happens inside them that's important but there are notable exceptions. (Can you say Starr and Meehan).

As to last nights game how exciting can you get??? To me the drama last night exceeded the OT games.......lead changes, comebacks, a go ahead goal, CU pulling the goalie then getting a man advantage with about 30 ticks left!!!! Phew!!!!!

While to some it may have seemed Clarkson carried the play in the first two periods I think it was a little more even than that. We did seem to start out nervous.....but even looking at the SOG stats they don't come close to telling the story of the game. We had a lot of puck posession and shot attempts that got blocked (credit Clarkson) but we had a bucket load of shots that never got close to the net and to be fair so did Clarkson. However in my opinion our scoring chances far outnumbered theirs for the entire weekend.

As to the third period can you blame Clarkson for sitting on the lead a bit?? That happens in almost every sport. Rather than extending or pushing they protect (which in most cases does take away the momentum). However we equally were responsible for it as playing from behind we played with abandon, pinched in way more than the first two periods and we were desperate. That desperation yielded the victory.

Lastly I can't post without echoing others comments on the officiating. Murphy was atrocious all weekend long and the call on Caister was beyond ridiculous. To call that when he let major infractions go??? Also taking McKenzie for "embellishment" after the cross check in the back also seemed a bit much and we were sitting right there when it happened.

Kudo's to both teams for what will go down in the record books as a classic rivalry series. I'm still worn out from the tension of the weekend and the games. Both teams can hold their heads high as they both left it out on the ice. What a wonderful way for our seniors to close out their career's at Appleton........

On to the Colgate series.........hope to be able to arrange my schedule to be there.........

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

And just you remember a couple of deliciously ironic things there Bonesaw...

1 - Your head coach stated in 2005 that Mike McKenzie would never survive at the NCAA Division 1 level. Woops...

2 - Matt Beca turned down SLU for an affiliation with a "lump" like you and an early start to the 2010 golf season. Woops...

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I think you might have forgotten something also. Woops. 2008 Clarkson made it to the final 8 teams? Woops? Was Beca on the team? Yes. Woops? Ring those cowbells and keep getting splinters on ur *** at Crappleton

If you got splinters at Appleton, there is something seriously wrong with your ***.

No kidding, Tim. There is enough finish on those bleachers to withstand another 50 years of wear and still have life left in them. I wouldn't be surprised if the finish exceeds half an inch from the actual wood base.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Nice weekend by the Skating Saints to knock off those punk Techies from Potsdam. I still can’t believe that the ECAC went soft and allows every team and the mother to make the playoffs! How you can reward a team that went 9-24-4 and 4-15-3 (with 8 draft picks) by letting them into the playoffs is a crime. Top 8 should make it in and the rest can go play golf. Just another brilliant idea for our feel good society where we have to reward everyone. This is what contributes to the softening of America. Anyway, nice job Saints and lets go clean house in Hamilton.

Go Saints Go
