Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Nice win for the rodents. Rau is a great player..wish he would have gone elsewhere! He reminds me of Oshie, seems impossible to get the puck away from him and he knows how to score. He can also play physical which is not the typical MN goal-scorer. I can say that I was actually pretty impressed with the Sioux this weekend. I expected them to potentially get blown-out by the high-scoring gopher's, but that didn't happen. I predict a different outcome at the Ralph later this season!

You can thank Dell for that. One of MN's powerplays generated six shots, and three of them were from inside of 10 feet. :p

True, but from what I recall the MN goalie made a few VERY good saves as well..and they weren't usually when the Sioux were on the PP. Both goalies played well. Patterson deserves the puck tonight, and if the Sioux would have won it would belong to Dell.

11-4-11 through 11-5-11. We survived Dell. Never forget. (insert American flag here)

That's not an understatement.

That being said, UND played immensely better tonight, and I thought we got lucky with a win, stats be dammed. The Ciccarelli-like goal at the end was AWESOME.

SWEEP!

Patterson's huge saves in the third wouldn't have mattered had Dell played an average game because the Gophers would have carried a 3-to-4 goal lead by then. That's why goaltending is the most important position in hockey - it can put a lot of pressure on the opponent to execute and frustrates the **** out of teams that aren't converting their chances. Then they start pressing, make mistakes, and give up oddman rushes (which is exactly what MN started doing in the 3rd). If Dell continues doing that, I imagine other teams won't be so fortunate / won't have the skilled players necessary to rally late like MN just did, and perhaps at some point your guys will have enough confidence to finish those chances and kill future comeback attempts.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Patterson's save to keep the game tied was epic. I was already swearing because I was sure the Sioux had just taken a 3-2 lead.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Holy cripes...
Half way through the 3rd I was convinced MN's inability to score on the PP was going to cost them this game.

I don't know what to say, really. Goph's couldn't score pretty all night, but found a way to get some scrappy ones. Great to see Rau get that last one after how much he was getting beat on and harassed tonight.

Both of UND's goals were very nice shots, very nice plays. I hate to say it, but Grimaldi looks really good. UND gave up a good number of shots tonight, but they looked like the solid defensive team that most expected them to be coming into the season.

I still expect UND to be a darn good team by the end of the season, but they are in a bit of a hole now and are going to need to start turning it around quick for them to be comfortably inside the PWR bubble by the end of the regular season.

It's strange to be heading to Madison next week and be worried about a let down, yet that's kind of how I feel.
But, this MN team has looked tougher mentally than I would have given them credit for heading into the year, so hopefully that continues into the next series.

The difference was that Dell kept the game from being a lop-sided blowout while Patterson prevented ND from stealing the game. Patterson also gave up the weakest goal. It was a sniper shot by Grimaldi, but still he was in the position and should have made the save. The gophers outshot the Souix badly 42-19 and the scoring chances matched the shots as well.

I gotta say it. I just can't filter myself:

Where's your God NOW, Rocco?! ;)

The Rocco "Tebow" goal celebration thing... he should probably change that up.

I laughed. Players need to have a sense of humor about things. The more animated / ridiculous they are, the better.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Gophers finally scoring the ugly goal when pretty won't do it. That is a huge improvement amongst others from last year.

And I give props to UND - they also didn't quit and made the Gophers earn every second of the sweep. Fans can argue about who outplayed who but UND gave all they had and while they still seem characteristically chippy they played to win. Kudos to Dell for proving that he doesn't have to have a great defense in front of him to play well.

Anyone have an idea of the significance of the lapel (flowers?) on the Sioux coaches?

I can't decide of Blood was more of a liability or not - great intensity and energy but 3 trips to the box.

I don't hate the Grimaldi Tebow. Leave the hating of that up to Sioux fans.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

The lapel thing was a nod to the Canadian armed forces. Don Cherry was sporting one tonight, and after I saw Hakstol wearing one, I asked about it. (and made a UND Canadian joke, of course).

Disagree. Part of the reason for the shot differential was UND's inability to break the puck out and bad giveaways in the defensive zone.

Anyone have any idea how many minutes Blood logged tonight? As was noted in the score update thread...he never seemed to leave the ice.

Swept by both our biggest rivals in 3 weeks. Very frustrating.
