Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

rocco seems like a classy kid. he makes it very easy for people to take shots at him, but for someone his age to take a stance on some of the issues he has "preached" on.. i give him props and wish him success.

just wish hak would let the kid heal up for the world juniors next month!

It LOOKED like shoulder to shoulder, even in replay, but in full speed, and was questionable enough "contact to the head" (which was the official call), I have no prob with the call at all.
Two things bugged me about that call. From my view (Section 1, Row 1) looking down the ice, it looked like a shoulder to shoulder hit, and with the height difference, there was no way to avoid some amount of contact to the head. Ambrosz certainly didn't lift his arms or anything to go high, it's just that his shoulder is nearly at Lammy's head.

The second problem was the way Lammy laid on the ice writhing until he twisted enough to see the ref's arm up, at which point he popped right to his feet and re-entered the play.

Given the position, away from the boards, and Lammy's actions, call it 2 minutes and move on.

Lammy's lucky he didn't get a misconduct himself, the way he was screaming at Shep about the (admittedly weak) charge in the 3rd.

All in all exactly how I expected things to be called when I saw who the ref pair was. I'm hoping for a reasonably well called game tonight, but with Shep and Hunt in the stripes, I'm sure not holding my breath.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

So is there some way a person whose cable provider doesn't carry BTN can watch this game????? I hate BTN.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

You basically get the same feeds the producer gets during the games, along with the producer/cameraman chatter.

Is this even available tonight, though? Not sure if they run that for BTN games.

Can't imagine they would send camera crews and run staff when they don't carry the game.

With it being on BTN nope, I just realized it was on BTN and not FSN.

Tonight's game: MN dominated the first period but had a tie to show for it. Their play slipped quite a bit in the 2nd while UND got better, and somehow UND had what I'd call an "opportunistic" 2-1 lead heading into the third, despite being heavily outshot and out-chanced.

As for the third, let's just say after a fairly lethargic first 10 minutes, the final ten of regulation was more along the lines of what I'd call "typical Gopher-Sioux" - just wild end to end action.

Based on the play, MN certainly deserved to sweep this series, but thanks to Dell, it very easily could have turned out differently. I had no expectation of MN winning this game early in the third; it just felt like one of those situations where Dell was going to steal one, and he very nearly did that. I continue to believe this UND team looks like MN's team from four years ago - they can get solid goaltending and defense but not much else. They'll have to win their games 2-1 or 3-2 because they just don't seem to have enough firepower to do much else.

to the sioux fans- at least dell looked good and grimaldi is a beast. wish he had chosen denver but im just glad he is on a below average sioux team. he would have been the difference maker for north dakota last year.

Agreed. Although I think UND overall played better then what your stating. They generated a number of chances and had rebounds to go after and just couldn't get it past the goaltender. Much like the Gophers most of the night. Patterson doesn't stand on his head on a couple of those and the Sioux go up by two and the games over. The game felt at the end like the UMD game (not as high scoring) that went to OT. The Gophers just never quit and found a way to win.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Actually, this was a character win for the Gophers. They outplayed UND, but how many times have we seen a hot goalie and opportunistic goals the other way get into the head of the better team? They deserved the sweep, but hopefully the Sioux will have matured enough by the time they meet again in GF to change the outcome.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Other than when he was sitting in the penalty box, did Ben Blood play the entire third period? Man, he was on the ice all the time. He is a good player. I swear he did not leave the ice the last five minutes at least. I think Hakstol called the time out so Blood could get some rest. On that note, does Hakstol not trust anyone else on the blue line?

He actually played(on the ice) the whole game... not much of an exaggeration either.

The Gophers played four lines and UND played 3 lines.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Diggin' the broom.
Always fun to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat....seems like it's been a while since MN has done that.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

I'm not stating UND played like total crap; they certainly had their chances, especially in the seesaw third period. My comments were meant to convey my overall impression of the game in its entirety where MN had a substantial edge. Obviously with the way the game went, it was totally up for grabs in the last ten minutes. That's pretty much how it goes when you're facing a hot goaltender. I also don't mean to diminish Patterson's importance - he made some very important saves to allow MN to make their comeback - again, that's par for the course when your team is desperately trying to find the equalizer and is taking some chances.

The bottom line is MN somehow found a way to solve Dell while staving off a back-breaking 3rd UND goal (that could easily have happened in the nutty final minutes). One thing nobody can find an argument with is that the game became edge-of-your-seat exciting in the final minutes with the firewagon approach in full effect.

Lastly, I expect a different series in January up there. The scores may be similar, but I don't expect the same chasm in scoring chances or shots.

GE - MN snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in Duluth. It wasn't that long ago. :p And now at least one of their fans is claiming every time MN sweeps an opponent, it's like we've won a national title. :D
