SCSU and UW: Badger hunting

Re: SCSU and UW: Badger hunting

Watching the replay closely, Marvin comes from behind and to the right of Geoffrion, who is trying to handle a puck in his skates, drops his left shoulder to duck under Geoffrion's, and then uses his shoulder to nail him right in the head/face. I suppose, trying to put down my Wisconsin colored glasses, you could argue he was trying to avoid a check from behind by trying to get in front of him. But once he got in front of him by going under his shoulder, he chose to hit him in the head. Geoffrion's head was not moving. In other words, he didn't "aim at his shoulder and miss because Geoffrion dropped his head".

You could argue it wasn't his intention to hurt him. Its tough to prove intent. But its just as hard to argue that the hit was innocent. Given his hit on Chenoway - a hit by the way where he took 5 or 6 picking up speed strides to absolutely drill Chenoway into the boards with his elbow to the back of his neck - he doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt. He forfeited it by what looked like a hit to almost intentionally injure Chenoway. Time for him to lie in his own bed.

Its also time for SCSU fans to maybe acknowledge there's a legitimate issue here.

Word. Best commentary on the thread.

Next question is whether the WCHA takes a stand against hunting captains.

Re: SCSU and UW: Badger hunting

 Of Course they are serious, but in a contact sport bad things happen on legal hits. Players learn at a very young age to keep your head up or things like we all saw last night will happen. That is why every coach over and over again tells his players to keep their head up. Every kid is taught to lead with your shoulder and that is what Marivin did. Unless you say you can't check in the open ice how do call that a penalty? Has Eaves commented on the hit yet? I doubt he would say it was a dirty hit.

After explaining how the ref told Eaves it wasn't a contact to the head penality because he hit Geoffrion in the face(apparently not part of the head anymore). Eaves said he told Motzko after the game that he'll be sending the tape of the hit to the league officals.

I think the dirtier play was Roe's cross check to the face of Smith. That was a direct intent to injure penality. Very surprised that it wasn't a Game DQ to go along with the Major.

Re: SCSU and UW: Badger hunting

From someone who was at the game: "Lee gave up 4 soft goals, with Dunn in net it would have been another Husky victory."

With back to back ****** poor games, I hope Lee doesn't see the ice the rest of the season.
That person would be incorrect. What the person neglected to mention is UW's goaltending wasn't very good either last night. The goaltending was a wash. You could just as easily assert UW wins this thing by 5 or 6 goals if Gudmanson had been sharp. St. Cloud would have been depending on the goalie to completely stand on his head to have any shot at winning because the score ended up being a good reflection of how much UW got the better of play.

I liked the reaction to Marvin's hit...pouring in a few more goals. Get the nice cushion and then spear or butt-end a guy in the last two minutes is what I probably would have done if I thought it was intentional.

Re: SCSU and UW: Badger hunting

Saw it live and in the 3rd section, anybody have a link to either the Raboin hit or the Roe skirmish?

A poster over on ss.com uploaded the video of Marvin's hit on Geoffrion:

Listen to the Wisconsin announcers... wouldn't even have been called a few years ago in "old time hockey," now they're protecting people, so call it 2 minutes which they should've, then move on. Hope Blake's ok, but the UW guys said all's fair in love and hockey.

And the dirtiest team in the WCHA award goes to... [drum roll] ST CLOUD STATE!

Doesn't look dirty to me.

When this guy defends Jan Brady, the defense rests.

Look who it is....

Pot, meet kettle, blah, blah, blah...

My evaluation of it has nothing to do with the participants. I've got no love for UND and I thought the Marvin hit on Genoway was bush league. And I certainly have no love for SCSU (although I'd like to see them get an NCAA win for Parise sake), I just don't think the hit on Geoffrion qualifes as the same. imho it was a mere coincidence that his shoulder/upper-arm made contact with the head. Given the way the play took place - the speed of each player and the position relative to each other - you couldn't aim for the head and accurately make contact.

It's unfortunate, and I understand why Badger fans would be upset given it was their guy that was taken out, but if you step back and just look at the play it doesn't come across as dirty. Just an opinion.

Re: SCSU and UW: Badger hunting

I guess I'll agree, but I don't understand what Marvin was trying to accomplish. He's behind the player, has a terrible angle, and decides to go for the big blow-up type of hit instead of getting himself back in position.

I just don't understand why a player would go for a hit like that starting from behind the player. I'm not surprised something bad happened because of it. When the players back is to you you're not supposed to hit him and in this case Marvin twisted himself in a knot practically to get by him enough to throw his body and shoulder back against the grain to hit him.

Seems to me it was a play just asking for something bad to happen.

Re: SCSU and UW: Badger hunting

I talked to a lot of Husky fans in Madison on Saturday. I'm curious to know if I actually met some of you!

Great road trip, the best in our WCHA tour thus far. We stayed at the Double Tree, right in the middle of the action. We drank at the Nitty Gritty, The Pub, Brats, BW3, and some Irish bar further towards the Capitol. Good time had by all. Only one jerk fan before the game. It was funny how many Badger fans thought our whole group was from St. Cloud. Honest mistake, but I imagine (like me) the vast majority of SCSU fans don't currently reside in St. Cloud. In fact, everytime somebody asked me if I was from St. Cloud I asked them if they were from Madison... nobody said "yes".

Euro's and my group went to Nitty Gritty, The Pub, Brats and I lost track of the other ones we went to. We were at Brats all day Saturday until the game. We stayed at University Inn on State Street. I do have agree with you about badger fans assuming we drove from St. Cloud. Mr. wore Black and myself live just south of Milwaukee. Also, my husband went to Madison for a year so he used it in his favor. I was good seeing a lot of people I had not seen in quite some time.

Best line of the weekend came from some of the people checking into the hotel. They were wondering where St. Cloud was located

Person 1: "I think it is in Minnesota"
Person 2: "No, I think it is in North Dakota or South Dakota. I am pretty sure it is in South Dakota."

I understand wanting to hit someone, but in that position and situation, a "normal" play would be to lift his stick, knock the puck away, try and steal the puck or just crunch him; not turn yourself into a pretzel for hit to the head. The fact he threw his shoulder into him was the problem. If you watch the video, he could have tapped the the puck forward with his backhand to the d that was along the far boards.
