SCOTUS 15: Help Us, Ruth Bader Ginsburg! You're Our Only Hope!

Scotus just pulled the plug on what was left of the VRA.

Basically said the states can do whatever the fuck they want in the name of election security....

Even if the plaintiffs were able to demonstrate a disparate burden caused by HB 2023, the State's "compelling interest in preserving the integrity of its election procedures" would suffice to avoid §2 liability.

That's a really long-winded way of saying, "Equal protection for some"

Edit: Holy balls, that opinion just gets worse and worse as I read it.

Bye bye Democracy. Nice knowing ya.

You can't take this line, because we will have democracy in this country, one way or the other.

The difference between doing something about it now, using peaceful and legal means is saving the dozens of millions of people the Nazis will kill and who will die in the ensuing fight to take it back from them.

Nazis always lose in the last reel. The only thing that changes in body count.

Now, if you're saying let it happen and then allow them to remove themselves from the American movie permanently... you'd have to clear that with Sic and Hovey.

Just because Nazis lose doesn't mean Democracy wins. You can fight back the evil and still never gain back what you once had. This is not a zero sum game.

That is true. It could be democracy only had its day from 1830-2030 (?) because the ruling class needed massive populations for their factories and armies. Now, with higher technology, they can cull us back to a smaller, more controllable, less expensive population of disenfranchised serfs.

It is interesting how the conservatives on the Court always rule against Democracy and always rule in favor of the rich. The rest of their beliefs are apparently malleable but not those two.

Greed is the foundational Conservative principle. Literally anything else they stand for can be traced back to some form of greed, whether it's actual greed for money (taxation is theft!), selfishness in wanting to do whatever they want even if it tramples on the freedoms of others (religious freedom to discriminate!), or desire to avoid being held accountable for externalities (I don't care if my energy policy is killing gay baby whales!).

But . . . the the Jeffersonian Ideal . . . .

It's also pretty amazing how an entire human party can exist on those ideals. It's sick. Rotten to the core.

To be fair, the Predatory Rich have existed as a class since Tell el-'Oueili. The camouflage just comes and goes.

Oh, yeah, I get that. But that's the core thing that Democracy was supposed to fix. Instead, it has found a way to corrupt Democracy to its will.

Democracy can't fix anything...because Democracy has the same flaw as everything else: People for the most part are awful, greedy and selfish.

I don't think this is so.

People are for the most part a shade on the good side. There are more good people than bad people. There are two problems that exaggerate the effect of the bad people.

1. Bad people collect power to oppress others. This is a force multiplier.

2. Our system, whatever its intent, reduces everyone to amorality, which is the cornerstone of bad behavior. It actively disincentifies good behavior. We are all forced into a war of all against all and that gives the bad an advantage and the good a huge handicap.

I'm not saying most people are smart. Most people can barely tie their shoes. But smart/dumb and good/bad are entirely unrelated (Socrates was wrong). A population of morons can still be on balance good. But the smart good people have to put chains on the bad people.

No, people are not good. To quote Men In Black:

Kay: A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it.

That is a great soundbite but it's stupid. People are at their best when they socialize. The sh-ttiest people are the most individualistic.

We understand that people becoming hive bees is pathology but we don't understand that a person becoming a Randian Lone Wolf is exactly the same degree of pathology.

Human beings are human because they are in society. Aristotle was right. Give me towns of 20k people with robots doing all the hard work.

If the last five years of American politics haven't proven this to Kepler by now, he'll never get it. A majority of the country generally doesn't care what happens to their neighbors as long as they get their own slice and it's at least as big as the rest of the block. "I'm alright Jack, keep your hands off'a my stack."
