Re: The Penn State Scandal, Take Two

I guess I'll ask the real important question.

How many Fulmer Cup points would this have been worth?

Apparently Sandusky had 40 felony charges, so at least 160, plus however many perjury charges, and then ya gotta figure bonus points for the sheer audacity of the thing.

I'd say rename it the Paterno Cup but that may be inappropriate considering the Big Ten is going to award that later this year...

I thought that was just for players.... Are coaches eligible?

Tweet from a Penn State senior and staff writer at the Penn State Rivals site

All things aside couldnt more prouder of students for rallying in support tonight. Showing nation what being a Penn Stater really means

and another from Pat Forde of Yahoo

Sensing a massive disconnect between the feelings of Penn State students and fans here vs. the rest of the nation when it comes to Paterno.

Speaks volumes to me about the cult of personality that has been discussed.

But how Penn Staters see this so differently than others troubles me a great deal. We don't just see this at Penn State either. Notre Dame has had recent issues, including the Declan Sullivan tragedy and the suicide of a St. Mary's student who shorty before taking her life had accused a Notre Dame football player of assaulting her. These incidents were seen quite differently by some people connected to Notre Dame than by many who weren't.

Too many of us seem to be unwilling to look critically at ourselves or at the institutions we hold dear. Look at the approval ratings for congress. At least 80% of us think congress as a whole is failing miserably. Yet 80% of us think our member of congress is A-OK and we plan on voting for them again. Why? Because I'd never vote for a jerk, or a criminal, or a loser, that's why. It's everyone else who is to blame.

That attitude gets us a lousy congress. It also helps to allow a pedophile to walk free amongst us. Maybe all of us need to do a better job of keeping an open mind. I know I probably do.

the CBS affiliate in Philadelphia is reporting Spanier will be asked to resign and get a benefit package or be fired.

They discussed this on KFAN on my drive home with Glen Mason (who sounded seriously distraught over the whole thing, and **** near in tears), and they believed that they would have to take Paterno's name off the trophy.

If they're renaming the trophy, might be time to rethink the "Leaders" moniker as well.

I finally got around to watching the Matt Millen clip and it was tough to watch. You can feel how emotionally invested he is with Penn State and how much this hurt him.

And Paterno's name should be taken off that trophy. Just keep it the Stagg Trophy. Classic.

The coach who wins the award should refuse to accept it if Paterno's name is still on it.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

Looks like Board unlocked the old thread and merged it with the new...after doing a little housekeeping :p

On topic:
With his job, reputation and legacy teetering on the brink, Penn State coach Joe Paterno has hired his own Crisis PR specialist to help navigate the child sex abuse scandal centered around ex-defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

The 84-year old Paterno has brought in communications expert Dan McGinn of TMG Strategies, according to the O'Dwyer's PR newsletter. The Arlington, Va.-based firm represents "Fortune 500 companies, leading educational institutions, law firms and non-profits," according to the company's web site.

The embattled coach said in a statement issued by McGinn today he'll retire after the final three games of this season after 46 years as head coach -- and 61 years of coaching at the university.

Said Paterno: "This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

His son Scott Paterno tweeted Wednesday all future media requests will be handled through McGinn's firm. McGinn did not return a phone call from USA TODAY Wednesday seeking comment.
