Re: The Penn State Scandal, Take Two

I think OP got himself banned, so that might help things stay a little more on track here in round two.

Unless someone else here wants to step up and take over the role of "Batsheet-crazy old fart."
Dirty...I am looking at you!

Now that's funny.

Re: The Penn State Scandal, Take Two

I do NOT want to be a Penn State student/alum right now. What on God's green earth do you do?

After listening to the reporter via the interview posted last night, +infinity.

The interesting thing is that people with more inside knowledge than us have even bigger doubts. At least that alum reporter sure did. They are making some connections that are real doozies.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

my apologies as well for quoting alfa's and adding my own thought to it. This thread seems to be generating some highly charged opinions, and understandably so. I've tried to keep it civil, but I probably made alfa's post look even worse than it was by quoting it. Apologies to alfa if I had anything to do with leading to a deleted post.

Ali Kreiger is on the USWNT and playing for a team in Germany. She posted the news that Paterno was retiring then said, "Joe don't go." A few minutes later she tweeted that she is in Germany and hadn't heard the details of what had happened and would have to read up on it all. I sent her a message that she might want to remain in the dark on this one as it isn't pleasant. I don't know what you do as an alumnus...the students on the football team deserve to hear the fans on their senior day, and the team is still in the running for a B1G title and a Rose Bowl berth. I think a lot gets determined by the BoT and whether they suspend/fire JoePa before Saturday. If he isn't there, it becomes a chance for the alumni, students etc to escape from this and celebrate for a few hours...if he is there it becomes an incredibly awkward situation.

No, I posted it. Thanks for the thought, but it was my post, and my fault. Gotta calm down- it's nothing compared to Penn State alumn nerves.

Do you go to the game this Saturday? You go, you're accused of putting football ahead of the victims and supporting what just happened. You don't, you end up not supporting the team, band, etc. who deserve support and had nothing to do with this.

Continue supporting your alma mater financially? Congratulations on supporting a school who let a pederast run wild. Withdraw financial support? Look little Johnny in the eye and tell him he's not going to college because of something someone else did long ago.

Years from now, someone is going to look at their resume, see "Penn State" and this scandal will be what comes to mind. People probably chose Penn State because it had a reputation for doing the right thing and acting honorably, thanks almost in whole to their football program. Their entire reason for choosing Penn State is now dust. Their reputations are forever sullied for something beyond their control.

There is a massive character test ahead for a lot of people.

NO ONE wins when something like this happens. :(

I don't think that it will impact general academic degrees and programs. But I wouldn't want to put on my resume that I worked in the PSU athletic department or that I had a high level administrative position.

The fact of the matter is that PSU is going to lose much of it's identity as many of the major positions will have to be filled by outsiders and people with little or no connection to the school. For better AND for worse this isn't going to be the same PSU going forward. This isn't something that can be fixed by rallying around what made PSU special because in many ways this was CAUSED by what made PSU a unique in the first place.

I'm often critical of DU and the lack of Denver alums making decisions on our campus but this case points to the danger of having a university with alums in administrative positions of power or on the coaching staffs.

Mike McQueary, Tim Curley & Gary Schultz were PSU alums. So the three guys in the room making the decision on what Sandusky did were all alums. Ruh Roh.

I think that it is about finding the right balance between the two. You need enough people to know what the culture of the school is and what makes it special, while still having enough of an outsiders presence to view the situation objectively. Add to that that it wasn't possible to be a PSU person without also being a Paterno person, this is what happens when you are at a school for 60+ years, you become the school and no one is left who remembers the school before you arrived.

Tressel was ousted as OSU, it may have taken longer than it should have given what he did, but at the end of the day people still remembered that OSU was bigger than one man and that OSU football existed before Tressel and would continue to exist after him. PSU football WAS Joe Paterno and people couldn't separate the two.

Mike McQueary, Tim Curley & Gary Schultz were PSU alums. So the three guys in the room making the decision on what Sandusky did were all alums. Ruh Roh.

Two were former football players, the result was ZERO objectivity towards the problem.

We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Give me five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah: the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones

I'd release the Hounds, or the Bees, or the hounds with bees in their mouths so everytime they bark at you they shoot bees at you? Or the Robotic Richard Simmons. :D

the BoT is meeting right now. I feel for the students and players and staff that were blindsided by this.

Re: Sandusky/Penn State scandal

"Only Monday of this week, for a story that appeared on Page 1 of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Penn State "declined to give details when PublicSource and news partner The Allegheny Front asked which companies and industry sectors contributed to research at the school." The article also pointed out that in '07, Penn State president Graham Spanier lobbied the state legislature not to include Penn State, Pitt, Temple and Lincoln University under the state's revamped Right-to-Know law."

Re: The Penn State Scandal, Take Two

I guess I'll ask the real important question.

How many Fulmer Cup points would this have been worth?

Apparently Sandusky had 40 felony charges, so at least 160, plus however many perjury charges, and then ya gotta figure bonus points for the sheer audacity of the thing.

WHat the hell happened? How did the thread get nuked, a new one start, OP get banned, and then somehow the threads merged...?
