Saint Anselm possibly moving up to D-I?

Re: Saint Anselm possibly moving up to D-I?

HC was the better fit academically, but the lack of commitment to women's hockey did them in.

There was a lot of grumbling among some of the Ivies that Quinnipiac was not academically up to snuff.

There was a lot of grumbling from some of the NESCACs that Castleton was not academically up to snuff...

Gee, like minds think alike?

Re: Saint Anselm possibly moving up to D-I?

The Ivies grumble about every school that is not Ivy League. So, what's your point?

I went to one, and some of it is reasonable - however, some of it is chest thumping arrogance. Although, the the Ivies are much more egalitarian in that regard than are the NESCACs. The Ivies even allowed Clarkson in to the ECAC :D (waiting, waiting ...)

I think I hate the NESCACs more than the Ivies at this point. They act like they are superior to everyone else in D3 and its probably the most irritating thing to listen to.

The dismantling of the Interlock was the final straw in my book, but it started with doing away with all non-conference games in football years ago. That put an end to the Norwich-Middlebury rivalry in football. It continued with their withdrawal from the ECAC East, and then the elimination of the Interlock altogether. The Ivies could (if they wanted) go on their own in hockey, but they choose to continue the traditions of the ECAC in hockey. Sometimes the NESCACs seem to be like we aren't the Ivy League, but we can be "exclusiver" and "snottier." It's a shame because they are academically excellent schools - they just don't need to be so hoity-toity about it.

Re: Saint Anselm possibly moving up to D-I?

As to the NESCAC's, if you remember, a few years ago they were behind a misguided and unsuccessful effort to create a D IV ,NCAA division.
Not exactly sure, if successful, who if anyone they would feel "comfortable" with in their league but for the present they will have to continue to mingle with the unwashed masses.
All I know is that their withdrawal in hockey has not helped the quality of play or regional competition

Nope - its really hurt the ECAC-E. With the Interlock you played the same schedule as the NESCAC. That was a selling point. A kid may be borderline NESCAC, but an E school could counter you're playing the same schedule as Middlebury so why not come here and save a few bucks?

Now the ECAC-E is Norwich and the nameless nine (sounds harsh but...)

Re: Saint Anselm possibly moving up to D-I?

I like the NESCAC as a hockey conference, but I don't think the level of play within it is really any better than the ECAC-E without the interlock.

Norwich is the best program in either conference, and I thnk schools like Babson and UMass Boston would be top half programs in the NESCAC just like they are in the E. The best thing that could happen for the E would be if St. Mikes was to move to D3 and St. A move up to D1, allowing league members two additional NC games vs D3 schools.

UMass-Boston, Babson and Castleton to name a few are all SOLID Division III hockey programs. Two of those three were ranked in the top 15 for much of the season.

NEC is usually a pretty solid program as well.

Re: Saint Anselm possibly moving up to D-I?

Just for the record, what team(s) in the ECACE, are the not"solid" program(s) ?
And while we are at it, a definition of " solid" may be helpful.

I think, in my mind, "solid" means a program that year in/year out produces a quality team that can play with the top teams in the nation - they many not always win, but they win their share of games and rarely suffer embarrassing losses or seasons in which they lose 15+ games. To my mind, in that category (based on recent seasons, and pure personal bias), in the ECAC East, the solid programs are

Solid:
Norwich
Castleton
UMB (was not always so)
Babson
NEC
St. Anselm

Partially frozen:
Skidmore
USM

Liquid:
St. Mikes
UNE

i think I get your point that you are an ardent Norwich supporter.
I will also agree that Norwich is a good/very good team.
What I don't get is you dismissing the other ECACE teams.
If you are trying to raise Norwich up by putting the other teams in the league down, you are not succeeding or helping the reputation of Norwich.
Either you did not see many games last year or you can't be objective.
I don't think McShane or his players think Babson, Castleton, Umass Boston , st.A's et al are"nameless"
If I' m wrong please let me know, I know a few coaches that would like to put that statement on the locker room wall next year.

Supporter? Hardly. Admire the school? Absolutely.

Name another school that has finished in 1st place? Name another school (I can!) that has hosted the championship weekend?

That's not parity.

When was the last NCAA win by an ECAC East team not named Norwich? Nearly 10 years ago. It's no secret Norwich has owned the ECAC East. Sure on one game winner take all playoffs, things happen. Look at last year. The Babson Norwich Championship game was only interesting because of Testa. Being out shot 40 to 13 and still winning? Babson looked like a high school team playing a college team who just happened to pull an NHL goalie down for help. I watched a ton of Norwich games last year, and yes the majority of the time they were well above talent wise, the opposing teams of the ECAC East. It normally showed on the score board, shot clock, and on the ice in general.

Re: Saint Anselm possibly moving up to D-I?

Babson, " looked like a high school team" , I don't think so.
Maybe , Norwich should have their own league and not waste their time playing a bunch of high schoolers.
Why Didn't they just move up to DI, when they had the chance ?

That, sir, is a very interesting question. They could have -- still can, if they move up to D2. Some coaches have wondered why they didn't.
