IIRC, the school athletic program goes through a 4 year "cleansing" period before they'd be eligible for post season play. What would happen the the SMC and St. A's basketball programs if the schools move down to DIII? I thought one of the major reasons they won't reclassify is because they award scholarships to basketball players.

Is NU happy being a part of the GNAC?The GNAC has a history of being really pretty fungible, and lots of Norwich road trips go through Manchester on the way to Boston.

If they reclassify , they stop giving athletic scholarships. They leave the NE 10 , a basketball focused scholarship league and join an existing league or start a new league, non scholarship.
What is interesting is the number of schools that have been contacted about a new league that are les than happy with their current athletic situation and are willing to talk, confidentially of course.
We' ll see very soon
Hockey raises more money for the school than basketball.Sorry, I should clarify. I know they would not be able to offer scholarships if they reclassify to DIII, I just thought they received a lot of money from alumni with strong basketball ties, and are concerned the money would stop coming in if they were to reclassify. I hope they do move down....trust me.
Hockey should make the move to DI period. They have everything it takes to be there and be competitive. The Girls can also go to a DI league. What is the hold up ? Does the AD leaving have something to do with it ? Just a thought.

Bentley is the next shoe to drop leaving the NE 10. Stonehill and Assumption will then have to decide what they want to do. M y guess is thatBUT, the basketball team is hosting a nationally televised game against SNHU! That is at least exciting.
If St. A's does officially move down I am going to miss the cross-town rivalry in all sports we have right now. Some of the baseball games of late have been amazing! But I think it would be smart of them to move down. St. Mike's HAS to move down, they are all by themselves in VT. I truly wonder what is the fate of the NE-10 regarding hockey. And the fall out losing those two will have on the league as a whole. Plus Merrimack wants to move up, so there is possibly 3 teams on the move. Crazy.

Stonehill moves up to DI and drops hockey and adds mens lacrosse Assumption may stay
For St. A"s it is not if it is when they leave the NE 10
So you believe St. A's wants to try to get together a conference in D3, or would they rather join a current conference? St. Mike's is long gone. I don't see Stonehill moving up. Do they have the financial resources to even consider it? or the current facilites?
Bentley goes full Northeast? That would seem to be the most likely landing spot I'd think.
Not to beat a dead horse here but St A's has the resources to go DI in Hockey, Basketball and or Football. All they need to do is decide. Let's go Hawks!
They may currently have the resources, but it costs far less (travel costs, scholarships, etc) to go DIII and be competitive. And with the possibility of post season play, I believe they will be competitive in short order. Not to beat a dead horse here but St A's has the resources to go DI in Hockey, Basketball and or Football. Not to start a flame war here, but if St.A's has all these "resources to go DI" why have they been a jaw dropping 6th place team......in the ECAC East....since the turn of the century? Do they expect to just flip a switch and be competitive? Sullivan Arena is nice and all, but not sure how that's a selling point to put together a competitive team. I'm assuming here that the admin has changed because for years they have shown little to no interest in hockey or they wouldn't be averaging a 6th place finish in their league alone and no higher then 3rd. IF, big IF here, St.A's goes and plays DI they will be nothing more then a "pad the stat" night for most teams, and that's just AHA teams. I know they've gone on so long with out putting together a competitive DIII team, so being a non-competitive DI team won't be much different, but I have a strong feeling they will fold in DI before they have their first 3 game winning streak.
Cortland is only a couple dozen stars, new coach, new administration, and heat away from being "a top D3 team" too....I have been watching St. A's for years and they are not far from being a top D3 team;
So let's go DI and be nothing but a DI JV scrimmage game against 95% of DI teams, smart move. Yes, being "stuck" in that small D2 league I'm sure does not attract a lot of top notch players, but an average of 6th? Again, that's a lot of hope of just flipping that switch and being competitive. There are very few teams in DIII that could transition into DI and be successful and St.A's is not even on the first page. AIC, Bently, Michigan Tech, and Sacred Heart I'm sure will greet you with open arms however.the problem I am sure is trying to recruit players that have no chance to play in a NCAA tournament and are stuck in there small D2 league.
And again, if it was that good, they would attract a few more decent players and not finish an average 6th in the league....Every team that has a modern ice facility like Plattsburgh, Middlebury, Norwich, and Bowdoin have had very successful teams and Sullivan Arena is as good as any of them.
Again, see above. If its such a draw...........Plus being located an hour away from Boston and a great campus are all in place for a successful team.
.....and then you woke up.....did you choke on that steak?Just wait a couple of years after they go D3 and you could see St. A's fighting Castleton and Norwich for the ECAC E title each year.
Is that because you have your pick of seats with an average of only 18% capacity (476) since 2002?? Place much be rocking!!A Friday night game with the crowds at Sullivan is a very exciting place to watch a D3 hockey game.

To continue this discussion last season St. A's defeated Fedonia 4-2 and tied Buffalo State on the road (how many miles is it from Manchester to Buffalo). I would say they already are a mid level SUNY team talent wise and a move to D3 with a few more A type players should make they very good. But they have already proved they can compete with SUNY level teams. Just my opinion but a consider Ed Seney a very good D2/D3 coach.
