RPI Tourney (11/27, 11/28) (Bentley, LSSU, RPI, Union)

Re: RPI Tourney (11/27, 11/28) (Bentley, LSSU, RPI, Union)

As promised, my "official" prediction: RPI takes the crown for the 17th time, and the first time since December 2001, by defeating Lake Superior. Union ties Lake Superior in the Friday game, but loses the shootout and then beats Bentley to go undefeated in the month of November.

I think that the 6th period will have a more devastating effect on Lake Superior than RPI, which is what enables RPI to take home the trophy.
Phew, that's a pretty detailed prediction. The only thing you didn't have was the score in the Friday shootout. :D

BTW, has Union ever played in the Holdiay Tournament before? I don't seem to recall any prior appearances.

I picked up my tix at HFH this a.m. and was told that the parking shuttle from the Alumni House lot will be operating for early and late games. Also watched a bit of practice while there and will be forwarding my report to Schenectady. ;)

It's strange that no one has done that yet. Oh wait.

This is where I got the idea to call it the sixth period. Perhaps I should have put a copyright mark in my prediction post...

I thought Ralph had addressed this in one of the opening posts, but apparently not (it must have been one of the e-mails sent to the RPI-sports list). Anyways, this awesome site gives detailed info about the history of the RPI tourney. Union is 2-8 coming into this season, playing in the 1989-91 editions (2-4, including losing each of the first-round match-ups against RPI) and the 1998 and 99 editions (0-4, where all of their foes were non-Capital District teams).

Well, that's because RC knows what he's talking about. He's rarely wrong.

I am going to enjoy all 4 of these games.

I realize this is kind of a short week with the Holiday possibly interfering with news releases but has anything new come out about our injured boys? I haven't found anything as yet.

Credit where credit is due. Again, I stole this from RC. His latest blog post at withoutapeer.blogspot has the info on the holiday tournament, including the record of each team at this event.

Bentley over Brown last night 3-2. Certainly should give them a bit of momentum coming into the tournament. If we're healthy and play our game we should be fine though.

Re: RPI Tourney (11/27, 11/28) (Bentley, LSSU, RPI, Union)

Momentum from game to game is a total myth. You create your own momentum, shift by shift, not game by game.

RC-How then do you explain winning streaks and losing streaks? I do very much agree though you create your own momentum.

You may be right about the momentum thing, but winning certainly instills confidence and that may carry over to the next game.
That said, I will be totally shocked if we lose to Bentley.
This team has too much talent and this game means a lot to them.
Unlike Niagara where the game meant nothing.

I think it can be explained by confidence, more than momentum. If you believe that you can go out and score, and you're not fretting, you're more likely to put the puck in the back of the net and win the game. Momentum shifts pretty quickly and is subject to hits, saves, bad penalties, etc., but confidence is subject to less variables (IMO).

Gulp.

Well, if we aren't likely to gain any psychological advantage by looking forward to the sixth period, perhaps we should try a different tack.

Special tournament rule: While a third period and/or overtime will be played, as necessary to satisfy NCAA dictates as to what constitutes an official game, the team that is leading at the end of the second period of the championship game will be declared the tournament champion.

Hey, it's RPI's tournament - we make the rules. :D

Re: RPI Tourney (11/27, 11/28) (Bentley, LSSU, RPI, Union)

Ken Schott interviewed Seth Appert about the tourney on Rodger Wyland's show today. Podcast: http://www.foxsports980.com/cc-common/podcast.html. Also a discussion about the injuries. Helfrich is back. Bergin is probably. Lee is 50-50.

Good to hear Helfrich is back-that was expected from coach's comments previously. Not sure I like the probably attached to Bergin-concussions can linger and just hope he is back at 100%. Lee sounds like he is probably the last of the 3 to get back in the line up. Any information on what his injury is beside calling it a lower body injury?

Bergin practiced yesterday, but in a non-contact manner. The plan was to have him practice today in a full-contact situation, which will give him a definite go / no go, is my guess.

Appert made a comment about Lee receiving treatments to strengthen his ankle, for whatever that's worth.

(Edit: No, I don't have insider information, this is just what was said over the air.)

Thanks-that is better news on Bergin for sure. Certainly would be nice having him back and healthy for the tournament and the games coming soon afterward.:)

Although you've raised a number of good points of late, I disagree with this one RC. Momentum is essentially nothing more than confidence. Confidence builds or wanes game to game and increases with win streaks.
