RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

It's on topics like this that I am overwhelmed at the recruitment task a coaching staff must conduct to put the right peg in the right hole...every year, year in and year out...? It cannot be a scientific undertaking; there is art in this, no?

Totally agree. I think after endless hours watching tape and visiting kids, in a lot of cases it comes down to trusting your gut as a coach. For instance, I know Appert mentioned that when they were scouting Rabbani, Appert was struggling with his weird skating style... and whether he could survive in D1 with it. But Josh's NAHL coach told Seth him the guy was a winner and is impossible to move off of pucks. In the end, Seth credits Monty for making the call on Rabbani.

Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

I know early on, I sat up and took notice when Seth started getting USNDTP kids like Grimshaw and the Tinordis to visit. We didn't land Grimshaw (but we were late in the game with him and he still came for a visit) and we got one of the Tinordi's, but you could see that the bar had clearly been raised. Then along came this year's forwards! I had a friend in the know tell me at the time that Seth was chasing 4 forwards including two "blue chippers". Seth hoped to get one, maybe two of 4...but he ended up getting all 4. That is the definition of momentum, IMO. :D
Wasn't Derek Grant one of them. He didn't get him.
Appert and Monty have a knack for identifying talent and getting many of these kids to commit. I don't think we can thank Monty enough for the work he has done in recruting this batch of forwards. I know D'Amigo mentioned Monty as having started the conversation with Jerry very early on when he was still skating Jrs. in Binghamton. That foundation Monty laid survived all of the attention Jerry rec'd when he went into the USNDTP and the attention he got from big time D1 programs and MJ's.
I think that Pirri mentioned him also.

Hopefully, we are after someone else from the USNTDP. I think that we have to regularly (at least every two years) land a player from there to keep up credibility.

I have been pleasantly surprised with Rabbani's play.

You're correct on both counts RB. Seth hasn't made any bones about his intentions to bring the program back to national prominence...certainly the USNDTP is a list you want RPI to show up on.

Personally, I don't particularly care where he gets the kids from, so long as they are of similar caliber ...:D

I certainly don't care where we get players from either. It just is that the USNTDP has the highest concentration of top eligible players around.

Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

Here is something I've been pondering and I'd like as many of you to comment as possible:

I know there is an ebb and flow to teams as far as recruitment feeding success, feeding recruitment. In the ECAC, have any of you detected a 'pattern' to predict a team's upswing? Can you see the 'writing on the wall' for a downturn? So many of you have eaten, drank and slept (no particular order there ;) ) this division for so long, I'd be interested in hearing how you know what's coming for the ECAC in general and RPI in particular. In a nutshell...can you give me an idea about whether RPI is truly on the 'cusp' of becoming a contender?

I don't know about patterns, but as far as RPI goes, Appert has made a real difference.
We have more players vying for ice time, and that competition has made us a better team.
He is recruiting from places that we hadn't considered before. Minnesota high schools for example. He is getting higer quality recruits for whatever reason.
Better players competing for ice time leads to better teams. Better teams lead to better recruits. Put a couple of those NHL draftees in the NHL and watch them start to line up to come to the tute.
We are on the upswing and it started wth SA's first recruiting class.
While we still have to deal with admissions, we seem to be getting first class recruits.
I have only been here since 1993 ( I guess I am just a toddler next to Doc and RB) but This is the most excited I have been about RPI hockey. The future looks bright. Expecially if JL joins Pirri and D'Amigo next year. :D

Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

EHF: I am totally convinced that JL is the key to next year and the near future. He is that good and should excel at the NCAA level. That is not my opinion but that of people who have seen him and evaluated him. Ralph and I have been talking about him for a long time and we both are keeping our fingers crossed-he is a real talent.

I think there's a few of us here who have been talking about him for a while...Some of us have even seen him play...:D

True. He has 2/23/08 by his name on H's list.

RPI alum Nolan Graham brings his Coastal Conf. leading Port Alberni Bulldogs into Penticton tonight for a big showdown with the Vees. The Vees are 11-1 since the break (one game out of 1st), while the Bulldogs are 13-1 off the break with an enormous 16 game lead.

Should be a great playoff-type game !

A little late, but it is probably worth reposting. :)

I liked the fact that he broke down his own game; he mentioned more than once the things he wanted to work on to help the team. Sounds like an RPI blue collar, lunch pail kind of player...

Yes, indeed. He sounds like he knows what he was lacking. Although he is quite short, he does seem to be stocky, so he should be able to contribute on defense. I just hope that he does come to Troy.

Although Paul Kerins is having a great season, JL should be an improvement. As I wrote, Tinordi will probably be an improvement on Vassel. Brock Higgs provides will just add to our arsenal, and anything that Greg B provides will be a bonus.

As was pointed out when the video was first posted, they didn't ask JL anything about where he expects to be next fall.

I have a theory that the Canadians are slow to acknowledge American College Hockey, regardless that the CJHL is NOT major Junior. From my limited experience, they really don't want anything competing with their national sport. The change will begin to take place as Paul Kelly is now charged with promoting the NCAA directly against major junior. Players will know more about the educational options available.

That may be true about Canadians in general, but the Tier II teams and leagues are proud of their college recruits. Penticton is a prime example.

Today's USCHO interview with Kelly http://www.uscho.com/news/college-hockey/id,17982/LiveQAwithPaulKelly.html.

I know first hand how Penticton addresses the concept of college hockey. The 'culture' of the fan in general is, however, somewhat dismissive in favor of Major Junior. I sense the weight beginning to shift in the college direction.

Kelly's interview caught my attention for a few reasons, but the main one is the idea of an international allstar type of tour for selected players...'bout time we begin to promote our student athletes to the world...
