Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part II: (Insert Title Here)

Placid is a hockey town, with hockey fans. It's a great weekend getaway and the place will be rockin more than Albany or ac ever was.

Given I grew up closer to that place than anyone who regulars this thread, I think I already know that. ;)

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part II: (Insert Title Here)

One more negative to LP. Did you ever sit in the bleacher seats? Most uncomfortable hockey seats ever except maybe for west point which was bleacher and unheated.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part II: (Insert Title Here)

Today is 13 August 2012. There are 54 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October for the start of next season.

That is the day that an exhibition game is supposedly scheduled.

A post on Hockey's Future linking three highlight videos from Saturday's USA-SVK exhibition game (one per period) http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showpost.php?p=53517791&postcount=298. Melanson is #18 in Blue. Although I spotted him several other times besides for the play that turk mentioned earlier, he apparently didn't get much ice time.

The USA's first game that counts is today at 7:30 EDT vs. Russia.

If you put it that way, Tate sounds more comfortable. ;) Although when I was there (HBA) last year, I simply was standing at the top of the lower bowl.

Have they finalised the roster? Perhaps Melanson is a shoe-in and they wanted to give more ice time to the bubble players, especially if this is an exhibition.

IIRC, 12 of these players were on last-year's U17 squad, and they have the advantage of having played together.

My thoughts on Lake Placid. This Tournamet should be held in Albany. Lake Placid although a scenic and great place to visit its not a good spot for a championship tournamet it would be like Hockey East holding their championship in Caribou Maine nice place to visit not a place for a Tournamet. Hotels are limited and expensive and there is no easy way to get there. The Olympic facility for lack of a better term is a "Dump" It has not weathered the years of budget cuts very well. I do appreciate the history of the building in a nostalgic way not as a top notch facility. The fact that it is a "Big Sheet" is a minus in my opinion to the best of my knowlege Dartmouth is the only surface of that kind in our league and evereyone plays on it once a year. The ECACHL seems to think Albany is a perfect place to house the league offices but some how not good enough for the tournamet go figure ! as far as I can tell the argument is attendence and its too big. Well to that I say get to work hire a sports marketing company or hire a staffer w/sports marketing experience give the freakin tickets away if thats what you have do to fill the building if it cost money so be it we need to build a fan base for the tournmet. This is a buisness and it cost money to make money long term. College Hockey is in a state flux at this point and only the strong and proactive will survive. The ECACHL needs to stop sitting back and hopeing it comes to them and go out and get it. Lake Placid is a very quaint boutique setting for this tournamet but I do not believe in our long tem interest. In fact if you look at the most recent attempt at making Placid a go the Festivus or what ever they called it seemed to me to be a failure. Im not an engineer but comon sense tells you that failed experiments are not a building block to future success. Just my 2 cents.

For the league's sake, I hope they can go back to getting the Cornell, Clarkson, RPI, and SLU appearances in Lake Placid that more often than not led to the building being full when the tournament was held there. Otherwise it's going to look pretty rough indeed.

That would be the ideal way to get rears in seats regardless of relevant tournament location (i.e. somewhere in the league's footprint), since they seem to be the league members that have the best travelling fan bases. Granted, location does help for two of those schools. The biggest thing, though, is for those schools (one in particular) to get its playoff act together and actually get there. It sucks that the season pretty much comes down to three weeks because of the Union rule (at least it's two for the top four teams so the regular season does have some bearing, albeit a certain team needs to get its act together in that department as well), but it is the reality of the situation.

One game at a time, one step at a time, let's make it.

I take it you've never watched a game at Union.... The entire lower bowl in LP is typical arena seats with seatbacks....the bleachers are upstairs. If the ECAC gets to the point where they are selling those seats, it'll be a very pleasant problem indeed.

USA Hockey has finally posted a summary and box score of Saturday's game. Of course the first game that counts is now over. :)

Drew Melanson got an assist on the first goal. Time to watch that video again. :)

Edit: Nope it definitely was #19 (Moore) who got the assist as stated on the Slovakian website, not #18 (Melanson). Of course, it is possible that the uniform numbers on the USA Hockey roster page are wrong.

US lost to Russia 2-1 in a SO. Obviously, if Drew didn't assist on the 1st goal......no pts.

I have been looking for a box but haven't found it yet. Besides for the US site, Hockey Canada will probably post something in English http://hockeycanada.ca/index.php/ci_id/196067/la_id/1.htm.

The US missed a penalty shot in the third and then missed all attempts in the SO after OT.

I think Troyboy has it mostly right. It seems that the ECAC needs the money, so will essentially sell the tournament to the highest bidder every three years or so. Placid is a nice place to hold the event once in a while, but Albany should be the main site. The issues with Albany are a lack of suitable and affordable downtown hotel rooms and a lack of marketing and promotion for the tournament. The hotel situation needs to be solved for a lot of reasons, including attracting meetings to the convention center the city says it will build a couple of blocks from the arena. I disagree, however with Troyboy's assessment of available hotel rooms in Placid. They tend to be expensive, but they have as many or more hotel rooms within walking distance of the arena (1/2- mile or so) than does Albany. Placid or Albany; it all comes down to who makes it to the semi-finals. Cornell, RPI and Clarkson are the only schools that will draw large numbers of fans to the tournament. If you don't get two of those schools into the final four, you are not going to draw big numbers of fans.
