Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Hello, Lugnut.

how did you do on your survey project about the location for the band?

I actually presented it to my class today (which went reasonably well), but the final draft of the paper isn't due until next Tuesday. I'll see then if it's worth submitting to the powers that be.

I would think, regardless of mark (although if you get Diploma I'd consider making some revisions), it'd be a good idea to submit it.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

I have no idea who will get most improved, but if I had a vote it would go to Leboeuf. He did not impress me at all as a freshman, but he really stepped it up this year. JMO

That's an interesting thought. He seemed to have a few growing pains even this year, but if he (and BRO for that matter) can beat out a draft pick for ice time, they have to be doing something right.

Too bad it's a "paper." It would be great if you could embed a few videos that show the band at the end of the rink compared to the current location. I'm sure RPI-TV would have archival footage that could supplement it. Maybe you can submit it to the "powers that be" on a CD with hyperlinks or something....also if we could find that Sports Illustrated article from their archives.....

While this isn't it, it's still a fun trip down memory lane....

FF-Thanks for the link. I never tire of reading that story. The writing however pales compared to actually being there. One of the all time great experiences in our lives-Jenny and I can only hope we can get to see something like this once more.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

I haven't been watching the Rangers-Capitals series, but the article in my newspaper today mentioned that the Rangers fans have been directing derisive cheers at Alex Ovechkin with eight minutes to play in each period.

Let me guess - is it like RPI's "one minute" cheer, only with "eight" substituted for "one" and "Ovechkin" for "Clarkson?" :)

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Today is 2 May 2012. There are 157 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October for the start of next season.

That is the day that an exhibition game is supposedly scheduled.

Though I understand where this comes from I have always thought it is stupid for our fans to be saying. Anyone else agree? Especially when we are getting beat by the said team.

It's stupid that the team we reference says it with whomever they are playing that night. This is why SLU, Cornell (when they play them), and we mock them.

It started in the series against Ottawa - the Ottawa fans count down from 11:11 to 11:00 in each period then chant "Alfie! Alfie!" for their captain. So the Rangers fans started counting down from 11:11 to 11:00 and chanting "Alfie sucks! Alfie sucks!". They continued it in the second round but switched to 8:08 -> 8:00 and "Ovi sucks! Ovi sucks!"

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Any suggestions for a new thread title?

I can't think of a good one. However, I know there's one regular poster that is quite proficient with these and will have one ready.

Of course, if we don't come up with anything, there's always:
RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 Part II: We Couldn't Think of a Title

RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 II: Skating on Thin Ice

Actually, my original thought was "RPI Off-Season Thread 2012 II: Skating on No Ice"

(since it's summer ;))

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

There seems to be quite a bit of talk/rumors going around about new rinks being built at Colgate, RIT, UVM and even Bentley. Along with already completed new facilities at UMD, BSU, QU, Miami, Notre Dame and BU. Makes me wonder if RPI should have just went ahead and built a new rink instead of just making renovations to HFH. Just curious, does anyone have an estimated guess or know how much the renovations have cost so far? That figure will be getting much larger when they get around to replacing the seating and build up the east end.

I love HFH and all its history but a new rink would have been great to see. Maybe something similar to the one at Qpac or even Dartmouth.

I used to think I could go either way on the new vs. old debate. But when you boil it down, I'll always take HFH, or Fenway or Wrigley or Lambeau over any new facility I've ever been in. I havent been to Dartmouth's rink, but I was unimpressed with Q's rink. Modern yes - but it was nothing but a concrete bunker on the inside - zero style or charm. I'll take HFH over that barn any day of the week.

At HFH, I think the really important work has been done - new locker rooms, new rink lighting (for TV), new coaches offices, and Shirley's Playhouse, a.ka. the largely unused, only for the privileged sky boxes. IF they ever get around to new seating, the place will be downright civilized. :D

I hope the seating will be similar to what we have already. Dartmouth is like Union, it is all bleachers except they all have backs to them and are plastic. I like how our seats actually let you have your own space. If you have a few bigger people sitting around you it can be a bit tight but nothing like trying to fit your butt in between two lines painted on the bleacher.

I hope they also plan to update the sound system.
