I had wondered at the time why a certain blogger had not posted that rumor on his blog or as a tweet.....and now you know the rest of the story.
A new rink would probably have less seating which would currently be only important for the BRF!, but if we ever start getting bandwagon fans again, it will be a problem. I do suspect that if those changes are also made that an entirely new rink might have been cost effective. RPI, as most colleges, regard most (all?) of its buildings as historic. It might have made sense financially to tear down the quad instead of renovating it several times since I was a freshman. Similarly with many of the old green-roofed academic buildings.
