RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

The RPI Tournament is dead, let's hope it stays dead. Bad teams, no crowd, no students, and usually no band. It is better to play a couple of games on the road or at a tournament that has the money to support a stronger field than RPI was able to attract the past 5-10 years. If someone was to revive an Empire Cup type event with four teams from NYS playing in Rochester, Syracuse, Utica or Albany, you might get a crowd.
I dont know. Almost everyone will have more non-conference games to use come 2013-14. That might fix the problem of bad teams and no crowds. You could have a tournament with a couple Hockey East teams like Maine or BU mixed in with a team or two from out west. Perhaps RPI could also bring in a bigger sponsor like CDPHP, who might be interested if Albany doesnt get the ECAC championships.

As for a Empire Cup, I wouldnt mind seeing Lake Placid or maybe Glens Falls pick up a tournament like that. You could rotate one of the north country teams along with a capital district team every year and invite 2 other teams from NYS, say like RIT and Colgate one year, then Army and Niagara the next year, etc... Although that might get old after a few years.

I like the idea for an Empire Cup, but who said you had to have it one location? See if venues would be interested in a rotation, say TUC or Glens Falls one year, BCA in Rochester the next, The Aud in Utica or the War Memorial in Syracuse if Colgate is involved, Lake Placid if Clarkson or SLU is involved, unlikely but maybe the *** Center if Niagara or Canisius are involved...

That could be interesting.

The major changes in league affiliations will probably make it more difficult to get teams from the Big Ten, HEA and the NCHC (or whatever that Ken Ralph league is called) to come to Troy, especially at that time of year. With the students out of town and so much else going on locally – H.S. sports, Siena and UAlbany Hoops, etc. – you are not going to draw crowds to the Field House.
The only HEA teams you are likely to get would be Providence, Merrimack and perhaps UVM or UNH. The big-name Western teams will only come east to play Cornell, Harvard BC and BU. The RPI Tournament was a great event for many years, but its time has passed.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Since I concentrate mostly on RPI hockey, I haven't been paying too much attention to the changes coming in 2013. With the Big ten coming in, and the changes to the rest of the conferences, has there been any consideration to expanding the NCAA tournament beyond 16 teams?

We're already well above the 25% quota. We should be at 12 teams for the tournament right now, but the NCAA allowed hockey to go up to 16 because byes are messy.

None whatsoever. There was a thread on this subject somewhere else n this site in which this subject was discussed in depth. There are less than 60 NCAA Div I men's teams; so that a 16-team tourney includes more than 25% of all teams. That is outside the NCAA threshold; I've heard that the only reason there are as many as 16 teams is that the NCAA dislikes first-round byes even more than they like having "too many" teams on a proportionate basis in the tourney.

Most other sports you see perhaps 20% of the potential teams represented in post-season tournament; above 25% is extremely unusual.

J: It was a great tournament for a long time-and I for one will really miss it. I wonder if something like it could have been restarted-much earlier in the year (like October) when many teams are running around playing OOC games?

Thanks, I find that pretty funny. The idividual conferences can have up to 100% of their teams compete in their tournaments, but the NCAA has to make an exception for 25% participation. Why?

I don't agree with the 100% participation, But even if you openned it up to 20/24 teams, it would not be outrageous. JMO

Typically they like powers of 2 (unless they use those goofy "play-in" games) so that they have full brackets. NCAA rules are what they are. We won't see more than 16 teams in the tournament until we have maybe 80 Division I schools playing, is my guess.

I agree, and that is unlikely to happen my lifetime, or anyone else who posts here's lifetime for that matter.

Confirmed Bergin will not be back for his red shirt year. Will not give up my source but it is definite. Wish him the best of luck in his future.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Today is 26 April 2012. There are 163 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October for the start of next season.

That is the day that an exhibition game is supposedly scheduled.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

FWIW, just glancing over the schedule again for next season and looking a bit into the future it seems the 2013-14 schedule could almost be complete.

2 - SCSU
2 - @WMU (assuming the home series that was slated for October gets moved to 2014-15)
2 - @Mercyhurst (assuming RPI will return the trip)
1 - BU
1 - UNH
1 - vs Union (RPI being the road team)
1 - possibly vs BC @MSG

Leaving just 2 games, maybe for a tournament, 2 game series against a team out west or a couple single games against HEA or AHA. (Personally, I wouldnt mind seeing the return of the RPI tournament in 2013.) Im hoping with more non-conference dates to fill, we will see an increased number of games against Hockey East teams in the years to come.

Pretty much the only one of those games that can be 100% confirmed is the Union game since it's become a yearly deal, the BU game to a lesser extent since it's usually a back and forth deal with the Terriers. There may not necessarily be an SCSU return series given that the swap was largely done to make accommodations for the all-Michigan outdoor GLI, which moved in WMU and moved out SCSU. If there is a return trip, it may not be until 2014-15 because of how far out calendars are made.

WMU being on the schedule for 2013-14 seems pretty likely given the high likelihood that the originally planned set was for one in Michigan and one in Troy. Given that 2013-14 was probably supposed to be in Troy, the trip to Kalamazoo could well be moved to 2014-15 instead.

I don't see RPI doing two at Mercyhurst. Just a gut feeling, although we did see Clarkson do a pair at Bentley this year, so who knows? The dynamic usually hasn't been as beneficial to the weaker AHA programs on return trips in general but perhaps that is changing.

UNH, maybe, but the closer teams don't always put together home-and-home multi-year deals.

Had not heard that BC at MSG was a possibility but it would be fun. York usually isn't amenable to playing non-Ivies/non-Clarksons from the ECAC, AFAICT.
