Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Today is 4 May 2012. There are 155 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October for the start of next season.

That is the day that an exhibition game is supposedly scheduled.

They should join Pep Band. I still think "R-E-N! S-S-E! L-A-E-R! *clap clap*" whenever I have to spell it out.

Back in 05-06, Section 33 used to do: "Give me an R! Give me an E! Give me an N! etc.", along with two instances of "Give me a space!" to spell out "Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, [female dog]es!" (and yes, we added in the last word for comedic effect, we didn't actually spell THAT out)

Which is why people stopped paying attention after the first 30 seconds.

redhead18,
I replied to the message which you sent me through USCHO, and it bounced. Do you have an old email address in your profile?

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

I guess the reason I mentioned the rinks at Dartmouth and Qpac is because I like how the seating is set up, with seats going right up to the glass, while having the walkway up behind the sections. I know theres plenty of other rinks that have that setup but those are just the first couple that came to mind. Thats really the only issue I have with HFH, not a big fan of trying to watch whats happening on the ice and having to look through people trying to find their seats. I imagine your right that when the school gets around to replacing the seats, it will make a world of difference with how the place looks.

The original renovation plan back in the early 80's included escalators that would take fans to new walkways at the top of the north and south stands. However, it was dropped because of the expense. Construction of most modern arenas begins by digging a large hole so the ice and under stands infrastructure are below grade level and the turnstiles provide access to the main concourse. Retrofitting an old arena to try and create the same effect isn't very practical.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Looks like were getting closer to seeing college hockey eliminate the full face cage and switch to a 3/4 shield for next season and beyond.

Makes alot of sense, seeing how almost every player that comes out of juniors already uses the 3/4 shield. I think it'll be interesting to see how the boys look without that metal cage covering their faces. :)

We know what Haggerty looks like, and we knew what Halpern looks like. ;)

Looking forward to reports from the Awards Banquet. (I assume that several posters will be there.)

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

RPI Athletics has an article about the team's end-of-year awards: http://rpiathletics.com/news/2012/5/5/MHOCK_0505124212.aspx

• Most Valuable Player: Mike Bergin
• Best Defensive Player: Mike Bergin
• Top Rookie: Curtis Leonard
• Most Inspirational: Justin Smith
• Community Service: Jeremy Coupal
• Scholar-Athlete: Nick Bailen
• Most Improved: Matt Tinordi

Looking forward to hearing about the banquet!

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

I'm not sure I agree with either of Bergin's wins. Nothing against him, but he wasn't our best defender, and he certainly wasn't our MVP. I would have to pick Malchuk for best defensive player (or maybe Leonard if the winner had to be a D-man) and Higgs for MVP. Just my opinion.

Well said. Malchuk has to be on the list somewhere. I shudder to think how we would have fared down 2 men against Clarkson in the playoffs without him out there. I just do not know enough about the other categories to comment on the other choices. I am not sure this year we had an MVP but if forced to pick one i am sure i could come up with a name.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

agreed about the, " Best Defensive & MVP Awards"...wouldn't have been my picks. It was great seeing; Allen York, Eric Burgdoerfer, Matt Angers-Goulet along with some " old timers"; Kirk MacDonald, Kevin Broad, Scot Basiuk. For me the biggest news was that Jeremy Coupal will be taking a volunteer coaching position with Bemijii St. It's looking like Mike Bergin might be playing over-seas this fall. He just got his passport & is in negotiations with a European team, he's also still in negotiations with Dallas though. Lips were sealed on the plans for Jake Wood as far as where he'll play this fall. I didn't ask about Melanson after that. Richard Manley is Charles' cousin not brother. Patty Cullen is pretty certain he'll be in SC next year with obvious hopes to move up to the "A". Patty Koudys isn't certain, at least he wasn't saying, where he'll play just yet. It was a good evening with lots of laughs at a table I was at with; AspyDad, Bill, troyboy, JL, Bo Dolan & Josh Rabbani. The boys will be back for the Aug.11th golf tourney & begin Capt.'s Practice
