RPI Off-Season Thread 2010 -- The Calm Before the Storm

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2010 -- The Calm Before the Storm

We do have quite a group here-can anyone imagine what the number of posts will reach if we actually do have the kind of team that routinely wins and is an annual NCAA tournament competitior? We will need to think of a new thread titile every week:eek: All kidding aside, we are about 2 defensemen and one scoring forward and one power forward away from that level. We are just missing a few pieces, the rest is already here. Then we need coach SA to show that he can mold a group like that into a cohesive, consistent winner. This is starting to feel a litle bit like the early 80's. :)

Doc, I agree with your assessment of the Defense, but I think the scoring forwards are already in place. Both Helfrich and Cullen have the talent and ability to give us the additional scoring we need.
As for power forwards, everyone wants one. I have faith in SA to provide us with that one.
The goalie situation is the best it has been in a while, hopefully the incoming defensemen will be stay at home and defensively responsible.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2010 -- The Calm Before the Storm

RHamilton, given your knowledge concerning the inner budget workings, do you know if the Rensselaer Union's budget controls this and/or if there is publicly released documentation regarding this information?

The Union does not and has never paid for the salaries of full-time coaches.

Thank you for the info.

Wholin1, given this info, and seeing as how the institute is not state run, I would say that you probably won't find much information regarding coaching salaries unless you are able to get it "straight from the horse's mouth", which I highly doubt will happen.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2010 -- The Calm Before the Storm

It was already official, but now it's official official.

DUBUQUE, IA – Northern Lights Hockey, LLC announced Monday that the Dubuque Fighting Saints have named Jim Montgomery as Head Coach and General Manager of the new United States Hockey League team that will begin play this Fall at the new Mystique Ice Center. The team also announced that former Dubuque Thunderbirds Head Coach Joe Coombs will serve as Associate Head Coach and Bobby Kinsella will serve as Assistant Coach and Director of Scouting.

RC is correct; the Union pays for all manner of things (sticks, skates, underwear, food, transportation, renting the Field House, pucks, officials, recruiting trips, etc.), but it does not pay for any salaried positions anywhere in the Athletics department.

Or scholarships.

"Renting the Field House" is kind of a misnomer, technically it's just debt service on Harkness Field (or maybe at this point, on the newer renovations. The debt on the original renovations was paid off during my tenure at the Union).

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2010 -- The Calm Before the Storm

Yes, I know I promised this info last week. I will deduct 10% from my pay.

I compiled the spreadsheet using collegehockeystats.net as my primary point of reference. I started with the 2005-2006 season because that is when Quinnipiac joined the league. Another point of emphasis is that I only used ECAC league games (not all home games).

I published the spreadsheet to Google spreadsheets. It should be open to everyone. (Please tell me if it is not.) Here is the link.

Since Google spreadsheets is dumb and won't let me show the charts, I took screenshots and posted them to a flickr account. (League champions (or 1 seeds, if there were co-champions) are denoted with a star.)

Average attendance:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/49233894@N03/4515302585/" title="ECAC Attendance 1 by burgie12, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2716/4515302585_6ce22f489d.jpg" width="500" height="361" alt="ECAC Attendance 1" /></a>

"% Capacity":
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/49233894@N03/4515302681/" title="ECAC Attendance 2 by burgie12, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4009/4515302681_33eefbd7c7.jpg" width="500" height="364" alt="ECAC Attendance 2" /></a>

% Capacity vs Points

(% Capacity is in quotes because the capacity of the arenas change each season, and multiple games in any given season would be listed as sell-outs. If multiple games were listed as sell-outs, I used the highest attendance. If no game was listed as a sell-out, then I used the USCHO-listed capacity (which we all know isn't actually accurate).)

How does this apply to RPI?
RPI's attendance peaked in 2006-2007 and has been in decline. Our attendance rank was lowest in 2008-2009 (4th), but we haven't been more than 3rd-highest in the past five seasons. On the capacity list, RPI has been anywhere from 8th to 10th, so I think the empty buildings that the Engineers have been playing in front of, combined with the lack of a true student section has lessened the fear of the HFH and made it a less intimidating place to play.

Other comments:
Either Ivies sit on their hands, or they inflate more than just their grades. Yale and Princeton have exceptionally high percent capacities but I've never heard of Ingalls or Bright as intimidating places to play.

Quinnipiac's attendance is difficult to judge because of their ever-changing venue when they began their ECAC play. They were selling out the Northford Ice Pavillion and I expect TD Banknorth to fill up if the team continues to improve.

Colgate's attendance dropped 600 between 2007-08 and 2008-09 and I can't figure out a reason for it.

With 4-5 teams (nearly every year) averaging below 70% capacity, it's fairly obvious that ECAC teams are struggling to bring in fans / revenue.

On defense and power forward we are on the same page-I normally agree with you but not in the case of scoring forwards. Helfrich and Cullen have just not been able to sustain what seemed to be their potential-I strongly suspect that Helfrich has not been playing at 100% for some time and unfortuantely we have no way to know if he ever will again. We need a minimum of one more scorer-someone who gets the puck on net instead of passing up shots to tries to set up a better chance. We have those unselfish boys who pass up their own shots but need one more finisher. Give me a Brad Tapper to add to this current group-and I will give you a top ECAC team and a real good chance of an NCAA bid. :)

I went to late season RPI at Yale a couple years back, important game for both teams. There was no more than 1500 fans probably closer to 1000

Went to a game at Bright.... Harvard vs BC, a great game, there couldn't been 1500 for that one.

Princeton's hospitality room at Lake Placid was always empty when they played for an ECAC title. Not a fan in sight. But they had the best food. yum

Great work Burgie, although. Interesting that you mentioned Q'pac and Colgate -- two venues I visited this season. Q was less than half full and there weren't many students there at all. The late season contest at Colgate had playoff inplications for both teams -- Starr was less than half full and the students that did show up came late (end of the first) and left early (end of the second) and it was tie game well into the 3rd period. I can offer no explanation.

I would change the first sentence to the Union "helps pay" or "substantially contributes". We good folks/alumni/boosters/advertisers and friends of RPI hockey who cut checks help pay the freight as well.

For things that are off budget, yes.

I'm going to guess that you're referring to the home finale for Yale in the 2007-2008 series. Listed as a sell-out (3486).

Went to a game at Bright.... Harvard vs BC, a great game, there couldn't been 1500 for that one.

They've had a bunch of those games recently, but all were listed as 2000+ attendees.

Like I said, Ivies inflate more than just their grades.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2010 -- The Calm Before the Storm

Some chatter on the OSU and Union boards that Leaman might be a candidate for the Buckeyes job. No telling whether he applied. I know I wouldn't be heartbroken if he jumped to the CCHA. :D

That was the Yale game
There were empty seats all over. I change seats each period and never had a bad one. 2000 fans at the most if that place holds 3500.

I don't know if Ralph posted this article on Monty but it is very good

http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=279335

Boy, Monty has an impressive CV. Monty is going to be missed because when he walked in a house to recruit he had immediate street cred because of NHL experience, Natl Championship. Again, I know I'm a big Seth proponent but he brings quality people to the table which will pay dividends. This was true with Monty. I suspect DrD is right about Helfrich -- I think he was hurt. However, heard he wasn't-- just kinda of had his psyche rattled because of big guns Jerry and Brandon coming in. Remember he was a healthy scratch at the end of the year for a couple of games. He did look much slower skating this year though.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2010 -- The Calm Before the Storm

Today is 13 April 2010. There are 178 days until RPI's next game.
