RPI Off-Season III: Another Helping of Mindless Speculation and Idle Chit Chat

Re: RPI Off-Season III: Another Helping of Mindless Speculation and Idle Chit Chat

I hope this is just idle speculation and they don’t move it again after one year. AC is not the best venue, but maybe they learned from last year and will work to improve this one. When it moves, move it to Placid or Boston and leave it there for a few years. Are they just going to load this tournament on a flatbed and shuttle it around the east to the highest bidder every year?
That's why it moved out of Albany in the first place. $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Planning on attending the Christmas Tournament in Lake Placid (Festivus sounds like a Druid sacrificial ceremony...). Wicked informs me that the fan events will be at either the Crowne Plaza or the Holiday Inn. Which do I choose?
I think the Crowne Plaza used to be the Holiday Inn. That's where we stay for youth hockey tournaments - it's right next door to the Olympic Skating complex - albeit up a big hill.

Festivus is actually Latin for festive but your instincts are quite close. Festivus is in some respects a more fitting name for Christmas since the holiday was essentially created by the Romans as a merging of Saturnalia with a young Christianity and thus morphed celebration of the return of the sun (winter solstice) into the birth of the son of god. Eventually Pagan Yule traditions were merged in making it a real celebration. The history of Christmas is pretty interesting... many of our Halloween traditions also originated as part of the celebration.

In our quest to be PC we have become a riduculous shell of our once great selves. I for one will be attending this tourney but will refer to it as a Christmas tournament as the wonderful and beautiful babo stated in one of her illuminating posts. Christmas is about the baby Jesus and I plan on sitting with babo and signing O Holy Night between the first and second periods. As my fellow Knight of Columbus brothers say "Let's keep Christ in Christmas". Merrry Chrsitmas to all and to all a good night.

Just curious... but does that "once great selves" comment harken back to the founding of our nation when Christmas wasn't even really celebrated?

If you are worried about PC, then you should embrace Festivus as it is about as anti-PC as things can get. PC is about trying to accommodate everyone's feelings. Festivus is more about telling people where they can go and why. My fervent wish is that the ECAC requires the refs and Mr. Stewart especially to be there when the airing of grievances begins. Perhaps they can line up a reporter or two for you!

Thanks...it dawned on me that Festivus might also be what we all would have called the d**m thing anyway after libations in the Crown Plaza...ala Foster Brooks...brrrrp!

Could the ECAC tournament be on the move to Providence as early as this spring...

I hope this gets done! ECAC does not belong in AC.
Providence certainly isn;t alone in chasing the tourney.

I know for a fact the Lake Placid folks have been working on convincing the ECAC to return. The Halloween/Festivus face-off didn't happen by chance. With the completion of their shiny new convention center - connected to the Arena - means LP could now host all of the tourney events - banquet, receptions, etc in the building...likely at a reduced cost than at an off-site hotel.

Selling the New England coaches would be the obvious hurdle.

Apologies Babo - I was moving fast last night. Substitute "Golden Arrow" for Holiday Inn in my previous message. (www.golden-arrow.com) Sadly, I'm not on commission. :D

Also the coaches who prefer not to have their championship on a larger ice surface than the regular season was played on.

Jesus is the reason for the season JM. As for the reporter crack, I'm ok with Weave because he is a member in good standing of the vast right wing conspiracy. BTW - have no regrets in defending SA from unjust suspension that the Dean of ECAC reporters helped bring about. Happy Holidays!!!!

Jesus was born in March. But considering this song, Festivus is quite appropriate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHpMZPYWDm0

Breaking news......Olympic Authority is able to reduce the Olympic sheet of ice to NCAA regulation standards. So this is no longer an issue for coaches.

Today is 26 August 2011. There are 36 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 1 October for the start of next season.

Re: RPI Off-Season III: Another Helping of Mindless Speculation and Idle Chit Chat

Since when is a single hockey doubleheader played on December 10th a "Christmas Tournament?" Heck, the Army-Navy football game has been moved back to the 10th this year (an abomination in my opinion) but I don't think anyone views it as now being part of the Christmas season. Last year we played BU on the 11th and it wasn't called the Red Christmas Rumble. At least the event we affectionately and unofficially called for decades "the Christmas tournament" (most years its official title was the RPI Invitational), was played during Christmas week. Perhaps someday we'll even go back to applying the Christmas label to things of true religious significance instead of being offended because it wasn't applied to a hockey game that isn't being played anywhere near the holy day.
