RPI Off-Season III: Another Helping of Mindless Speculation and Idle Chit Chat

Re: RPI Off-Season III: Another Helping of Mindless Speculation and Idle Chit Chat

Today is 22 August 2011. There are 40 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 1 October for the start of next season.

Re: RPI Off-Season III: Another Helping of Mindless Speculation and Idle Chit Chat

With the season looming around the corner, how do you think the Engineers will do in the standings this season? It looks like a wide open league where a good handful of teams could end up in the top spot. My guesses for top 4 are probably Cornell, Union, Yale, RPI with QU as my wildcard that could sneak in if one of the other teams I mentioned stumbles.

Redhead, I agree with most of your picks but would also include Colgate after their strong finish last year.IMO as far as RPI is concerned the goaltending will be the key.

When isn't the league wide open?

I see Dartmouth staying up towards the top. I realize that they lose Estoclet, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this year's juniors and seniors step up. Also Colgate, although they had a tough year last year, they're very young and may see a night-and-day transition similar to ours between 2008-09 and 2009-10 (of course we did have some "added help").

As for us, if I had to make a guess, I'd put RPI at middle of the pack, due to the logjam of teams, as well as seeming that we play better out-of-conference than in the league.

I am far more optimistic for the Engineers. But then again I am always that way. I see a rough start to the season(because we may heavily rely on freshmen to step in) as all the new boys get adjusted to the Division I play. But i just think by January RPI will get it all together this year and be the team that no one wants to play against. Goaltending will be important but an improved and maturing defense along with a bunch of boys up front who can score will make for a lot of fun in Troy. Prediction-top 4 finish and a bye. I do agree that Yale, Union and Cornell may also be top 4 and would keep an eye on Colgate.

My predictions will wait for vicb's annual poll. Anything that I post now would either by woofing or reverse woofing and could only hurt. :D

I can't disagree...much. Given the loss of their coach AND their goalie, I'd say Union may be a candidate for coming back down to earth.

Re: RPI Off-Season III: Another Helping of Mindless Speculation and Idle Chit Chat

We throw the regular season finish last upset the numbers 5,4,3 or 2 and 1 seeds on the way to winning the tournament title. ;) ECAC gets one bid to NCAA tournament and we promptly get asked to leave the league and then announce we are moving to Hockey East anyways.

Or in the real world, I think we will finish somewhere in the top 6 again with 3 points being needed the last weekend of the year to get a top 4 bye.

And after either directly or indirectly (in the case of Fat Mike and Paul Stewart) causing 2 fines and/or suspensions on the year, right?;)

When you latch on to stuff like this, you really don't let go, do you?

Agree 100%...I also don't see Iles as an impact player....and Yale is basically starting from scratch in goal also...so it will depend on who steps up to the plate.....My hope is its Brice.

Want to place a friendly gentleman's wager on this? I think he'll finish the season top 3 in SV % and GAA. I think Cornell's bigger problem coming into this season is figuring out where the scoring will come from, needing a _lot_ of production from our incoming freshmen to compete.

Honed his skills with the diving team, has he?

Re: RPI Off-Season III: Another Helping of Mindless Speculation and Idle Chit Chat

with the talent "Hah-ved" has coming into this season(ie; Fr. class) it wouldn't surprise me at all if we see them knocking on the top-4-door. The potential is certainly there but as Ralph Kiner is fond of saying, "potential means you haven't done it yet".

This is probably true of us as well, although we are at least starting from a better base than Harvard is.

Any luck with the captain's practices? I never heard back from the people I sent letters to.

Im not taking anything away from Iles he is a fine goaltender. But I think we can agree that he is not at the level that Scrivins was @ this point and because of his physical limitations may never get there. There is no doubt in my mind that taking into consideration the system cornell plays he will have decent stats...but @ the end of the day will your utimate success be do to outstanding goaltending ?...can he put the team on his back and steal some games for you like Scrivens could...thats what I mean by Impact...we shall find out soon...looking forward to our games w/cornell...always a test and hard played just like it should be !....Good luck !

Quoted for truth.

And with Scrivens, you always wondered just how his back dealt with all of those impacts.
