Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

Anyone have an explanation for me? As usual I am a bit confused.
I have no idea how these things work...its seems like they start from a conclusion and work it backwords so the top programs in the country can remain the top teams in the country in the face of any results...kinda like a hockey physics...I put it under the heading...that figures don't lie...but liars figure....I believe if you shot gun a few Grey Gooses it may become more clear at the end of the day we have all understood the meaning of life from the small end of a vodka bottle....a dose of liquid "it is what it is"

I'm sure that someone will look this up and give the definitive response but as I understand it they are not really measuring the same thing. The RPI SOS is 2/3 of your opponents wining percentage plus 1/3 times your opponents opponents winning percentage. The definition of Krach is the winning ratio time the SOS. SOS is arrived at via iteration and involves relative strength of one team vs. another. So in one case it's merely an average of winning percentages whereas the other it is the average of your opponent's Krach ratings (essentially). Weak leagues would tend to fare batter in the RPI SOS and strong leagues in Krach.

RPI is solely a percentage of the records of you, your opponents, and your opponents' opponents. KRACH takes who you've played and is a little more recursive in determining the SOS. I don't quite understand it either, but have been trying to get a grasp of it on CHN's website.

Well at least I am not alone on this-thanks to all of you that tried. I still am confused but at least i have an idea of why the two SOS numbers vary by so much. I do think the entire system is set up in such a way that the strong stay strong and the weak stay weak but there has to be some system to use and I guess this is as good as they can develop. I figure the best thing for us to do is just hope that our boys win the rest of their games and make all these RPI, POWER, SOS things immaterial.;)

Doc - All you need to keep in mind now is that we are set up very well based on our non-league performance thus far and the relative strength of Union and Yale. If Yale, and RPI play the way they have to date and finish in the top 3 in the ECAC (with one of the top 3 winning in AC) then they both are in great shape. Union, while in the same category in terms of results so far, have two tough OOC weekends to contend with before they can focus merely on staying in form in the ECAC. Everyone needs to pull for Union during the next few weeks.

Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

I just noticed this, but although RPI is 9th in PWR (3rd among ECAC teams), they are still above the highest ranked team in the CCHA.

Insert Eastern Bias slams here.

I follow-but I will still find it hard to root for Union(even though I went to their medical school). I still figure if we win 18 more we can silence everyone and not worry about any sort of selection process:rolleyes:

FWIW, the RPI formula changed from 25-50-25 to 35-50-15 a few years ago, so it isn't 2/3 and 1/3 anymore.

DrD,
The calculations are entirely different, so the results can be quite different. Jmhusker explained this above.

Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

Ottawa Senators grinder Jesse Winchester, who grew up 20 minutes down the road in Long Sault, trailblazed his path to the NHL through the Cornwall Colts to Colgate.
“I kind of influenced their decision a bit, but they love hockey so much,” said Winchester, who met the twins four years ago and trains with them regularly in the off-season.

This explains why the Spink twins went to Colgate......I got this off the Colgate thread

Ralph-I got it-see post #147. His explanation made sense.

Doc... I understand that you are being facetious but the fun thing is that you have to ask yourself... other than Yale, is there a game where we aren't going to be favored? The answer to me is no. 18 wins would be crazy of course but other than Yale, we are in the best position in the NCAA to actually run the table.

And before everyone rails on my overoptimism... no I don't expect this to happen. It's a long season and we'll lose a couple that we don't expect to. But... 16-6 in the ECAC doesn't seem outrageous and that would translate to 24 wins before playoffs.

Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

Just curious, does anyone have an update as to whether or not the new videoboard and sound system will be getting installed during the 18 day layoff between the USA and Clarkson games? I know there were plans to have it installed mid season but Im not even sure if the new board has been delivered to RPI yet. Maybe RHam can fill us in. :)

Ralph, were you still planning on coming up for the CU/SLU games in early January?

The word I heard through the grapevine is that the video board will be installed the week between Harvard/Dartmouth (1/21-22) and Freakout weekend (1/28-29). I believe it's not scheduled to arrive until the week of the H/D series, and they want it up and running in time for Freakout. Not sure if the sound system is pegged for a mid-season upgrade or next summer.

Thats good to hear, thanks. Id imagine they would want the new sound system put in with the new video board. Any idea when the championship banners will make the return back to the rafters of the fieldhouse?

Bob McKenzie thinks that Pirri is battling for a fourth line center or 13th forward spot. Kind of surprising/disappointing. Then again, if he was still at RPI he never even would have gotten a whiff of interest from Hockey Canada.

I think there is a bias against former college players on this one. If you didn't come out of there Major Juniors they don't like it. Pirri is a talent though. Will be hard to overlook a guy that will be second on the depth chart for the Hawks at some point here soon. Toews being #1 on that chart.
