Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

Question??? Ralph will most likely know but when is the last time we cracked the top 10? In advance, thanks.

Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

Talk about a waste of revenue. Seeing as how both Freakout and Clarkson stand-alone are prestige priced games, they won't schedule Freakout against Clarkson (especially since last year, Freakout was put on Senior Night to avoid a Clarkson freakout).

Frankly they can do whatever they want. Yes, scheduling Clarkson for Freakout cuts down on a prestige priced game, but it didn't stop them in '88, '02, and '04. And if I recall, the '02 Freakout, in particular, ended up being a fairly memorable game....

We'd love for you to send your thoughts / comments to Kevin. You might want to CC Jim Knowlton (knowlj3@rpi.edu), the Athletic Director as well.

I have just sent my comments off with a cc to Mr. Knowlton.
Thanks for the opportunity.

There was no prestige pricing for games back then; this concept I speak of was introduced a couple years ago, where the single ticket price is higher ($3 for general, not sure for students/seniors) for the Union, Clarkson, Cornell, and Freakout games. It's to RPI's revenue advantage to not schedule Freakout when one of these three teams plays.

Thanks B12 and GR. Should have known Tom would be on top of it. No RPI Hockey fan should leave home w/out the WaP twitter page.

Didnt they move the Freakout last year to Senior Night because they honored the 1985 championship team during the Clarkson game?

I don't have the answer to that.

I'm not debating that financially it is better to keep the two games separated. Obviously it is.

As you've pointed out, prestige pricing was not implemented. However, the financial considerations were similar. They were combining two high selling games into one. That being said, they still would occasionally host Clarkson for a Freakout. The '02 and '04 Clarkson Freakouts were way more exciting than Clarkson games by themselves. It wasn't just the possibility of losing to Clarkson, it was the possibility of losing a Freakout to Clarkson. There was much more at stake.

More often than not, they will take the financially prudent choice and keep the two games separate (and they should). However, I don't think it is fair to state that they won't schedule Clarkson for a Freakout from now on. There are other factors to consider, and playing Clarkson in the Freakout is completely awesome.

It was great fun at the closed circuit broadcast, attended by both RPI and Clarkson alums, when we came back from a deficit to win. :)

Thanks for picking that one up. I certainly didn't remember. :)
I cheated. I guessed from one of Tom's most recent WaP posts that the last time we would have been ranked in the top 10 was the middle of the 99-00 season and worked forwards from there. Once I hit February 21st, I stopped, figuring that they never went back up.

The '02 Freakout was my conducting year with the Pep Band. It was, without hesitation, the most exciting RPI Hockey game I have ever attended. The first two and a half periods I can forget, but what an unbelievable finish!

It's in my top 10 from all the years I have followed RPI hockey. There have been a couple already this year though that are pushing hard to be ranked highly. This current team has that attitude of just not quitting. This year even vodka gimlets don't seem to be able to calm me down when we come up with those last second heroics.

I'm shocked no one with the DVD has put the game on Youtube.

Just a small suggestion. I would try a couple of Manhattans. Seems to do the trick for me.

I wish someone would, or preferably that RPI would start selling DVD's of historic games.

A few years back I bought the '85 championship game on DVD. I was 3 and a 1/2 when that game occurred, and I was thrilled that I finally had a chance to see it.

Hey there RPI fans... Here are a few pics from the UAH games down in The Rocket City... Huntsville, that is.

The first one shows that RPI fans both travel well and there are a lot of them here roaming the halls of NASA and our many other high-tech companies. The RPI faithful bought out about 1/3rd of the on-the-glass Ice Suites at the UAH defended end.

Notice the red table cloths and RPI pennants... not to mention the sea of red along the glass! They had a good time.

In this one Brock Higgs prepares to faceoff against UAH's Justin Cseter. Hope he's healing fast, feeling good, and will be back on the ice real soon.

They've really got their eyes on the puck in the ref's hand...

Here York stuffs UAH's Allan on a point-blank shot after a feed from 21 Desmet. Bummer from my point-of-view but a "killer" save!
Point-Blank%20Save(s).jpg

Notice the puck in York's trapper off of Allan's stick. I can still see that save, wow!

Those were two very closely played hard-nosed hockey games that could have gone either way and kept you on your toes and holding your breath till the end... literally as your guys seemed to wait 'till the last second (in one case actually) to score and take the wind out of our sails. But hey, that's been the story of our season this year. Always the bride's maid, never the bride. Tough season so far. Best of luck to you guys on the rest of your season.

Terrific pictures. All the best to you in the second half of your season.
