Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

RPI moves up a couple spots into a tie for 7th with Notre Dame in the current pairwise rankings after the win last night.

7t Rensselaer 17 10-4-3 .6765 7 .5571* 8

Scary moment for Brock last night, hate to see that happen. Lets hope and pray for a speedy recovery. Anyone have an idea on how long he might be out of the lineup with an injury like that?

Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

My prayers and thoughts to Brock and his family. God speed Brock.

Zednik was out for a year (I was actually at the game he returned to HSBC Arena to play Buffalo). I would not be surprised if Brock redshirted next year. I do wish for him a full recovery.

Do you think, after this year, they're going to look into neck guards for the players?

Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

Interesting that we moved up considering that the win over UAH wasn't included since would have hurt us http://siouxsports.com/hockey/rankings/pwr/.

The game against UAH isn't used in RPI's RPI calculation, but is still used for common opponent calculations in the PWR. I assume it's that fact along with other team's results that made such a move happen.

Zednik's and Malarchuk's injuries were both extremely deep lacerations involving muscles and nerves being severed and in at least one case (M) included the left carotid artery. Both necessitated arterial repairs and that type of surgery, which is quite delicate, takes 6-12 weeks to heal and convalesce at the very least. Let's hope in Brock's case that this was more superficial and only involved cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue. He could have had a very superficial slice that severed a small arteriole and still lost a considerable amount of blood. Since we may never know the details (SA is usually not given to discuss the extent of injuries) we will only be able to tell if and when the coach feels he is well enough to practice. At the bare minimum, if this was the best scenario, I am sure we are looking at a month to 6 weeks off. Just my medical 2¢

You had me at cutaneous. :);)

From WaP Twitter re: Brock's condition

" Reports say that Higgs suffered a skate blade cut to his neck that just missed the carotid artery. Was in surgery last night in Huntsville."

Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

that whole game had an eerie feel to it. Door flies open in opening minute....problems with ice....glass gets blown out.....problems with ice.....Halpern goes down....clock goes down (at a very convenient time for UA-H?)....Higgs cut falling on skate.....problems with ice....sweet home alabama my arse, let's win this afternoon and get outa there

Just a few of a myriad of reasons why hockey in Alabama is just wrong. So sorry to hear about Higgs. I hope Doc is right and that they were working with a laceration rather than internal damage. My best to Brock for a speedy recovery...love the kid.

From Schott's report-and reading deeply between the lines-does not sound like an artery was severed (good news). Sounds like small veins were severed (not too bad news) did not mention if any muscular tissue was lacerated (unknown news) but most importantly-released from hospital after a few hours basically(great news). This could have been just plain horrible but sounds like with wonderfully quick attention, good immediate care, and a lot of just plain luck-that it will be just fine. The time frame depends totally on extent of injury and we just will not know that until we hear that SA says it is OK for Brock to be back skating and practicing. In any case-we should all consider it a bullet dodged. Let's just win this afternoon-no one getting hurt-and get the heck back to Troy safely.

That's a bit harsh. First of all, many of us are transplants (I'm a Michigander) and we're not going to give up our sport just because we moved where there's an economy. Secondly, this kind of attitude is, in my opinion, part of why hockey has such a hard time expanding. Besides, we're not exactly a flash in the pan, this school has had a hockey team for more than 3 decades, and even though they're division II, we still have a pair of national championships. A lot of folks up north would be really surprised to see how much hockey is really played in the south. I suggest picking up a copy of "Hockey Night in Dixie".

To address the initial complaints, yes our rink suffers from the warmth, but given this weekend is also going to see Pittsburgh suffering? Cut us some slack. We had ice last week (and 3+ inches of snow on the ground) and not this week. If one of our two schools can create a weather control device to solve this problem, let me know. As to the actual problems on the ice, that wasn't bad ice, not by a long shot. Was it good ice? No, we seldom get that, but it certainly wasn't bad. It is SLOW ice, and that doesn't change.

The scoreboard is old, it's not the first time and not the last time that problem will happen until it's updated. But it certainly isn't a problem limited to UAH. I've seen the boards go out at top notch schools from various events, in just about every sport. It happens. The door and the glass were the aberrations. We occasionally have a support knocked loose on a good hit, but two panes in one evening is rare, and I've never seen that door fly open like that. That elicited as *Wiskey Tango Foxtrot* response from most of those in my box.

Halpern suffered from a game injury. Like every team, you're going to see your fair share of these kind of injuries, has nothing to do with it having been in Alabama. We've lost players for several games to various problems. The skate cut was a tragedy, but again has nothing to do with being here specifically, it's just a fluke. It happens, at all levels. It sucks, seriously, but it's not the venue's fault.

We do wish your players a speedy recovery, and we don't wish you ill (except on the scoreboard). We much prefer it when the visitors enjoy coming to our community, and I don't like the fact that this trip may leave sour feelings.

Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

Just got my Jan.17 edition of The Hockey News.It list the 100 people of Power and influance in Hockey...It also list the Top 40 under 40.Our coach SA is listed at #23.The only other NCAA coaches listed are Jeff Blashill @ 24 and Rico Blasi @ 30...pretty Impressive....How 'bout that Gwozdeky mafia !!!!!...And oh by the way credit where credit is due....Great reporting by Ken Schott on the Higgs injury !!!

Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

in reply to jyoung; yes, those things all happen but to have them ALL happen in one game...geesh! Just hoping to get out with a win and no more injuries.

JY, I agree with everything you said. Hockey is the greatest game in the world and should be enjoyed everywhere. UAH has had enough of the hockey elite putting it down. They deserve a lot better. There is hockey in Florida, Texas and Arizona. There is no reason why Alabama can't have a good hockey program. I wish you luck in finding a league to play in and I am happy that RPI felt it important to travel to Huntsville. Hopefully it helps you guys in the future.

I don't think our Great Coach would harbor bad feelings. Injuries happen and thankfully Brock is fine. In fact, the report from Ken Schott (again great job Kenny, seriously) says it was one of our players that clipped him. Coach Appert is a great Ambassador of the game and I'm sure you all are grateful for the games that he scheduled this year. Hopefully we come out with a W and will wish you guys well.

yeah, he was sitting next to us in the first period. Could be much worse, and I saw it happen and it was an RPI skate, but that doesn't make it any less upsetting to see.
