RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

I don't disagee with this sentiment. I think both should have stayed if not for purely selfish reasons but I think they both will see big paydays. JDA's value was the highest it would ever be IMO. My time watching the team goes back to the late seventies and I think the 80s guys cashed out at the right time too after the National Championship (Oates I believe ran out of eligiblity). BTW- I was watching the US team practice with Red Cloud, Turk 181 and troyboy and tb told us the story about when he was in Catholic Grammar School in Troy how Rich Scammell and Colin Ingham were his gym teachers. I'm sure these names will bring back fond memories for you and the Ralphster. Actually tb and I are older then most of you may think because we don't act our age just our shoe size:D (leave that one alone FDude) As an aside, my best to you and Jenny for a lovely Holiday season. I always enjoy your takes and appreciate your kindness to me.

Thanks for the thoughts. Colin did not back down from anyone-he took as many penalties as needed (and a few that were not necessary). Scammell had as hard a shot as I had seen up to that point in college. I cannot express the feeling that it brought out in those of us who were there to see the freshman class of 1965-66. That was the low point for the varsity of all the years I had followed RPI hockey and to see the talent coming in as freshmen was just inspiring. Unfortunately we lost Dale Watson this year but memories of these boys coming to RPI are still strong for those of us who were there in those days.

I believe Oates was eligible to play another season of college hockey.

My recollection is that Mike Addesa told the story of Oates coming to him and indicating that he was having trouble making up his mind whether to take the Red Wings' offer to turn pro or come back for his senior season at RPI and possibly help the team make a run at another championship.

Addesa asked how much Detroit had offered and Oates said it was a million dollars.

Addesa told Oates that if he had an offer for that much money on the table, he should take it. The coach said that he would never have forgiven himself if Oates had returned to RPI and gotten hurt and the offer had gone away.

Oates had indeed one more year of eligibility. I think that Kraig Nienhuis was the non-senior one whose eligibility had run out.

And then Detroit traded him for a washed up Bernie Federko. Imagine if he stayed in Detroit to grow up with Yzerman. My goodness.

Crossing out star? I'm shocked! :D

In any case, for everyone else, at least from WaP's point this is old news, but a little article on the scoreboard: http://broadcastengineering.com/pro...ronics-center-hung-video-scoreboard-20101224/
Out of curiosity, does anyone know how many college rinks in the east (ECAC/HE) have video scoreboards? I know Harvard and soon to be RPI are the only ones in ECAC but cant recall how many schools in HE have them. I assume almost all do.

I thought Clarkson had one... or is that just one of those color displays similar to what we used to have with our information bar above the scoreboard, a la Colgate?

I've only been to BU and NU, but both do. And, doesn't Q-pac have one in their nice, new, shiny arena?

Their board is neither color nor video. But it had a big display area so that they could play cheers that their band could play along to during play. *grr*

I think Clarkson has video, but its shown on one of the walls inside the arena and I dont think its used as a scoreboard.

Ive only been to Q's place once and I dont remember seeing video on the scoreboard. As for HE, Im pretty certain BC and Maine also have video. Havent been to Lowell, Merrimack, Providence or UVM in a while so im not sure about those schools.

Here's a question... if video capability won't be ready on the new board, and it doesn't look like there's room on the bottom portion, how are they going to keep penalty time? Are they going to use the old-old scoreboard that is currently used for shots?

That would be my guess. They use that small scoreboard to track penalties for intramural games, so we know the capability is still there for it.

Yea, but don't they also use it for the game clock itself? I thought they were synced, and you almost know that some homer board operator will start the penalty clock a little late for the CCT penalties and stop it a little late for the RPI ones should these two not be synced. :p Of course that would mean they'd have to use the old scoreboard for everything.

When I went in 2005, a couple of the lights on the board were out.

Sounds good to me. :D
