RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Basically I agree with you, that now it is "just win, baby." We are still quite far from winning enough comparisons to worry about secondary factors. On the other hand, removing three TUC losses is probably the largest secondary factor at the moment. Also there are some games that it would be better if Union were to lose than others.

Also, it is nice to root against Union under any circumstances. :D

There's a more pressing reason to root against Union than the Pairwise right now - the fact that they're just a point behind us in the standings.

Union is behind us in the standings, that's at least a small semblance of a return to normalcy, one supposes.

Union lost more from last year than most had felt. They are still a dangerous team and their style can be very difficult for us, but they are not even close to what they showed last year. They live and die with special teams. If we had the success that their power play has had-lots of things would be different. I don't particularly root against any ECAC teams and in fact, sort of like when Union physically tires out an opponent that we get the next night. We have six games left in the league schedule-I think we need to win at least 4 to be considered a top contender in the playoffs and 5 would just be fabulous. These things will work out one way or another-I am far more concerned right now with any loss to injury-Matt Tinordi is a key cog and I would not like to be without him for the rest of the season. Also, I wonder about the status of Marty O'Grady. he must also be less than 100% or I am sure coach SA would be getting him into the lineup. i guess i am being a bit selfish but i would love to have about a baker's dozen more games before this season ends.

I think that there has been a mass suicide in Potsdam. There hasn't been a single post on the Golden Knights Hockey Roundtable since Saturday's game.

Ralph, I think your on to something,as we drove thru Potsdam on our way home from our win over Union, Sat. night my wife and I noticed an eerie calm over the village. There was no honking of horns as the fans were pulling out of Cheel as there usually is.By the way, your team looked real good this weekend and out played the Saints for the entire game imho but the winning goal wasn't very pretty but came as a result of hardwork by your wing who wouldn't give up on the play------

Doc, we are playing great, and have reason to believe that we can get that 4,5,6 wins that you are looking for. But we have to take them one at a time. This is still the ECAC and there are no easy games. Ask Dartmouth how they did against Harvard.
This weekend will not be easy, the trip to Cornell/Colgate will not be easy, and Clarkson/SLU will not just lay down for us.
We need to stay focused and play one game at a time. And that will get us the wins we need.

[Good offense without ogrady, schroder and tinodi. And we finish the season without our lineup 100% for 1 game

I watched the Dartmouth/Harvard game. The score does not indicate the level of play. Dartmouth deserved a better fate. The officials were pretty good-the problem simply was Dartmouth being off by a step here and there. They missed several golden chances. They had a goal called back near the end and that call could have gone either way. You are of course correct-it is one game at a time and we have to just focus on what is the next game. We have had our share of injuries this year but it is getting late in the season and injuries now may mean losing guys for the rest of the year. I am not in any panic-but i am getting a little concerned as we are slowly adding to the wounded. We have become a very good team-but we need all the parts to be working to continue what has turned otu to be a trelmendous turna round for the season.

Agreed. We seemed to improve our health over the break, and now the injuries are mounting again.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

What a difference a few months make. I was excited to have this year start after Seth turned it around at the end of last season. I was surprised at how poorly they played at the beginning of the season. I know one of the worst games I have seen an RPI hockey play in a long time was in Hanover NH this season. They were terrible. I could tell by Seth’s body language that he was disgusted with his players, his staff and himself. I thought he was going to have a terrible time getting this team on track. He was looking into the abyss.
I was fairly certain he had a goalie (938 save percentage) not too shabby. He took a long to tap him. I think Seth played all three to show his players, using game situations, which goalie was best.
Anyway, the Dartmouth game at the field house was great on a lot of levels. The engineers played an up tempo game by dumping the puck. They didn’t screw around with the puck in their own end. They would chip to an open area over the blue line go for possession, get the red line, dump it, and change. Sometimes they would chase with one forward to keep Dartmouth off balance but most of the time change all three forwards. They had shifts that we running less than 30 seconds. It was awesome. Well coached and executed. I was surprised Gaudet didn’t have a forward at RPI bench and have a d man clear to him and try to catch RPI with too many men. RPI created turnovers. They played so well without the puck, and line change execution was perfect.
Funny thing everyone around me was complaining “why does he keep dumping it, why doesn’t he leave the lines out longer” To me it was a thing of beauty. Best game I have seen him coach.
In the defensive end RPI had the confidence to leave the outside shooting lanes open. An open look at the shooter JK makes that save. I noticed that the defensive players were not following the shots and turning to look for the puck but they tied up their man. If everybody is tied up no one will score. Easy saves no rebounds.
He may not be “our great coach” yet but this year could be his best year yet.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

It's nice to finally be recognized, but my only question is how did Colgate and SLU get more votes than we did, considering that we are ahead of both teams in the standings and have beaten both of them? JMO.
Those were my thoughts too but in a way it's all good. We can stay under the radar a little longer although probably no longer than the Brown game (Yale will be ready as will ht e teams that follow).
There is still a lot of disrespect for the ECAC. Case in point: BU. What have they done lately? And they just lost to Harvard (again!). Yet a win this weekend and they'll likely remain in the top 15 while two wins for us and we'll still be struggling to get to #20.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Since playing RPI, BU has gone 2-6-1, including those two losses to Harvard.

Seems like Jack Parker wasn't kidding when he said RPI should have beaten his team.

Interesting thought. In betting NFL games we had a patient who was a heavy bettor who swore that you should always bet against teams the week after they played certain very physically tough teams (notoriously the Steelers and the Ravens). One season I followed that and noted that the week after playing those two teams, the opposing teams had the lowest percentage of beating the spread. I wonder if that holds true to any extent in hockey.

I've wondered about the same thing for many years. I guess when you don't have to justify your vote or explain it, you can vote any way you please.

When you are talking about 1 vs. 2 vs. 2 votes it isn't really that meaningful anyway.

I know. It's not a big deal. It's just that you have to wonder why 2 people chose Colgate and SLU over us (or if it was one person each who voted them 19th). Like DrD said, everyone has the right to vote their own way...

I wouldn't be surprised if the one who voted us 20th voted one of them 19th.
