RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Funny how 6 consecutive wins in league play can affect people. Just a few weeks ago everyone was looking, except Apsydad, to find replacements for our coaching staff. Now everyone seems to be on board with our great coaches program. Can you hear contract extension?

This one is for you Aspydad..

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Someone better get Weaver a schedule since CCT comes and plays us March 1st not March 8th. Unless he already knows we are going to have home ice in the first round of the playoffs and will be playing CCT.
Weaver doesn't have a by-line on that article, so it probably wasn't his fault this time.

Thank you SHD. As many of you know, I don't like to toot my own horn.

Great weekend of hockey, it's great to see some wins after a tough past 10 years . One weekend at a time let's keep it up

I wouldn't go as far as to say everyone.....nor would I say great coach either. Knee-jerk reactions when losing are just as silly as knee-jerk reactions when suddenly winning a few games in a row.

One thing we can say, though, is that Coach Appert has helped to continue a long tradition of bringing prominent opponents to our schedule, which gives great reason to continue following the program. Sure, the kids need to learn how to be successful against not only the high caliber opponents, but also the league. It has also been a learning process for Coach Appert, and I know there are some that take exception to being part of the learning process, but if the goal is to get the 'Tute back on the map, I can think of no better person to help with that.

Exactly-have to keep it all in persepctive. it is a long season and there could still be (hopefully) a lot of hockey to play. I would love another dozen games or so. Part of SA's job is keeping th eteam focused on what is coming up immediately-right now, it is all about Brown and winning a home game. Then go from there. This streak sure feels good-but it can get better with some continued hard work. Right now i would love to hear that Tinordi and haggerty are OK and that Kotyra is taking a much needed vacation in the Caribbean for several weeks (perhaps joined by a few friends).:)

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Something else for us to talk about.

Last Wednesday, I was browsing the RPI club hockey website as I do on occasion. When I saw the team picture http://clubhockey.union.rpi.edu/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&id=5&Itemid=42, which must have been posted recently, one thing immediately struck me. There is a very tall person in the back row. Looking at the roster below the picture, it is clearly Sean Sanford who is a 6' 9", 230-lb, freshman defenseman. I suspect that he isn't particularly good, perhaps slow or awkward, or we would certainly have heard something by now. BTW, 6' 9" makes him two inches taller than anyone on RPI’s basketball team.

It wasn't hard to find this page http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=139529 on HockeydB. So he played as a forward for the Drumheller Bandits in 2010-2011 in the AJHL and the NJ Hitmen of the EJHL last year. Three years ago he played for the Missoula Maulers in the AWHL.

There is a lot about him on the internet, mostly dealing with his size, e.g., http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/juniorho...ho-s-taller-than-Char?urn=juniorhockey-284151. Here is another with a video which also mentions that he had an 800 on his math SAT http://calgary.ctvnews.ca/ajhl-player-stands-tall-1.581989.

There are also some more videos on the net including http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Plfm2itTJO4 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZC5Ayww9gJA.

Here is an old Hockey’s Future thread asking about him. http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showthread.php?t=848106. The recent post #9 is mine.

Some more sleuthing showed that he originally committed to Colby (thanks, Wicked). The NJ Hitman website shows him as an RPI commitment.

I wonder if there is a chance that he could play on the varsity in the future. He could be the player that stands in front of the net on the power play as DrD has proposed on many occasions. I am sure that SA and company know about him, and I wonder if they had anything to do with him coming to RPI.

This is all quite interesting. I am surprised that he has never been mentioned here before. I did ask several RPI USCHO posters about him last week before posting this, and he was not known to any of them. I decided to hold off on posting this until after the NC trip.

A 6'9 230 lb. defenseman?? Sounds like he's "not a finished product yet" :)
Sorry, just couldn't resist!!

If anyone can find out more about him, I'm sure it would be you (or one of his teammates). Has to be slower than molasses, but I would love to see him play...

Do any of his teammates post here? There is more on the internet about him, but all that I found is quite duplicative. How many articles stating that he is tall should I have linked? :D There are some fight videos, but I figured that the one in the Drumheller video was enough. Had he have met up with Jimmy DeVito, I would have posted it. ;)

When hockeyhound showed up in the game thread yesterday, I thought about asking him since he might have seen him two years ago, but that would have been off-topic even for our game threads. :D :D

Edit: I am getting slow. It took me this long to get the "Sounds like he's 'not a finished product yet' :)" remark. :D

I wanted to go see him Friday night when they played @ HVCC and/or Sat. morning @ HFH but snow squashed that. They now play up in N.H. in the playoffs so I guess I won't get that chance to see him.

Ralph I was also checking out the RPI club site a week or so ago and was shocked a guy that size is not playing at the DI level. Maybe he is being groomed to be a walk-on next year...Imagine him and the BRO as a D-Pair.

He certainly could be. I haven't seen him play, unless you count watching some videos, but I have the feeling that d-pair wouldn't work, at least not next season. He did play in the Alberta league two years ago for Drumheller which finished in the middle of the back, so he must have some talent.

I can only recall one NCAA player we met personally that tall-Steve McKenna. We had some drinks with his team(Merrimack) in Troy when they were playing RPI in the early 90's. He was 6'8" and Jenny came up to his belly button;). I remember that he did not seem all that awkward or slow at the time.

Sorry that I didn't notice him earlier. I suspect that only "friends and family" usually watch the club team even though they have been doing well this year, and Sanford's stats are not bad at all for a defenseman -- but it is ACHA-III.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

I wonder why anyone with an 800 Math SAT score would want to wait around to start college at age 20? unless of course his major goal is to play hockey. if his goal was an academic pursuit i wold think he would have started college at age 17 or 18. You might be on to something here RB-playing Div I hockey may be more important than the academics and perhaps we might be seeing him in a year or so.
